Topic: System transfer losses

I have an original 3DS, with Ambassador Program games, Four Swords, and other VC games.
I was wondering if I'd get an XL and do a system transfer, what would I lose in the transfer (kind of sad anything wouldn't go over since this is 2013, but anyway)?

You would transfer everything into the new 3DS. Games, records, saves, and data all transfer.

Keep in mind that once you complete the transfer, your original 3DS (not the XL) will not be able to play your digital games.

I had to do a transfer once. I don't believe I lost anything. Only downside is that there's a limit to how many transfers you can make.

I haven't downloaded any retail games anyway. Just a lot of VC. I thought someone once told me that the Ambassador games wouldn't transfer, and I'd lose Four Swords or something, but maybe that's not true. Anyone know? (thanks for the help so far by the way)

you will lose nothing as the people above have said. I've done the system transfer four times. This is what is transferred over:

For the most part, information on the target system (system being transferred to) will be overwritten by the information on the source system (system being transferred from). See below for specific details, or click here for more information:
All content downloaded via the eShop on both systems (DSiWare, Ambassador games and status, 3DS Downloadable software, etc) will be combined together onto the target system.
After the transfer is complete, titles will be available to re-download from the Nintendo eShop on the target system.
Any game data that is duplicated on both systems is overwritten by the data on the source system.
Any games and funds purchased with the Nintendo eShop will no longer be playable on the system they were transferred from.
The eShop balance from both systems is combined together. (Total amount cannot exceed $200 or the transfer will be canceled.)
Data associated with any pre-installed software or applications (Face Raiders, Streetpass Mii Plaza, etc). Only the data associated with the source system is retained.
Pre-installed games (Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land) are treated as a standard Nintendo eShop game license. The license will be on the target system once the transfer is complete.
These titles are stored on the SD card of the target system, so if the SD card is switched out, formatted, or removed, the title will need to be redownloaded after the transfer is complete. (How to)
Photos, Videos, and Sound files
Any photo and sound files that exist on the target system’s internal memory will be overwritten. However, photo and sound files saved to the target system’s SD Card are still retained.
System Settings from the source system (Parental Controls, Internet settings, etc)
Save data associated to DSiWare and Nintendo 3DS Downloads
The WFC ID associated to DS online games.
Friend List data.
Swapnote data, including unique stationary.

Sweet. Thanks guys. I dont' know why that one friend of mine said he lost Four Swords and some other stuff, but maybe he just messed something up. haha. Oh well. Anyway, I guess we're done here unless there are any objections.

Just make sure you follow the procedure to the letter and everything will transfer just fine. I've transferred Four Swords and the Ambassador games without any trouble.

So if I bought the 3DS XL with MK7 preinstal on it and transfert my old 3DS game download (that doesn't included MK7 since I have physic copy of it) will I keep the MK7 from the new 3DSL XL and my 3DS games on the 3DS XL ? Will it keep my save files for MK7 or I'll need to play it again to regain all my stuff ?

If I've got a 32Go SD card for my old 3DS and wich to use it in the new 3DS XL should I bring my computer for any transfert in store (since they'll let me transfert the info from both of them in store)....

Thanks!

@SBOY Since saved data is generally stored on the cartridge itself, you should still be able to play MK7 off the cart on either system.
If you want to transfer your saved data from the cartridge to the pre-installed copy on your 3DS, then you should probably also use Nintendo's Save Data Transfer Tool. Please note that this process will also wipe your save data from the cartridge copy.

So I did it, and I got to keep pretty much everything except for save states and swapnote data...and it won't unlock special stationary anymore either if someone sends me a cool one. Can't figure out how to make it do that. I sent a few and I can change to other preinstalled stationary, but I can't use or unlock the others.

Ok so the preinstall game will still be there but I'll need to make a transfert from the card to the virtual version... That's sound good for me since I'll pay 199$CAN for the 3DS XL with MK7 and I'll trade-in the MK7 card for $ and keep all my download from the old 3DS on it... Thanks

Also if I've got more than 4go of game on my 32go card will it transfert stuff or I should do somethings to make it work ?

@SBOY If I were you, I'd stick with the System Transfer Utility and Saved Data Transfer Tool but, just to be safe, I'd also have my laptop nearby and at the ready.

That said, I believe that if you have more data to transfer than the card will hold, the system transfer utility will divide up the process, allowing you to take multiple trips between systems with your SD card.

Thanks again @shinesprite I just hope I won't have to download again a lot of stuff after the transfert....

I must admit that Nintendo did a nice job with the system transfert (3DS to 3DS)... At least it was better than the WII to WII U one...

Another System Transfer related question... Does your friend code transfer too? I've had my eye on a 3DS XL for a while now and cannot for the life of me find an answer to this question...

You won't lose anything. If you are just going to use the old SD card, you won't need to do anything extra. However, if you're upgrading your SD card at the same time, you may need to do what I did....
Copy all data on the old card to the computer
System transfer - wait until it completes
Put your new SD card in your new 3ds to see if you've lost anything - you probably will have 'lost' game saves and any games which were on your previous card (e.g. Four Swords)
Take the 'new' SD card, put it in the computer, format it, then copy over all the data you have on the computer from your old card.

Nothing lost, no need to re-download anything

Yes your friend code transfers
