This was really unexpected. I agree with the idea to just remove the photo feature, instead of shutting down all the funcionality. What's next? Are they going to cancel Wii U Chat or Miiverse messages? Both are as "risky" as Swapnote....

Nintendo did say sorry repeatedly for cancelling Swapnote. They know that most everyone was using the app for fun and the few sickos just totally ruined it. I just wish that Nintendo woulda told the parents, "Okay, okay. We understand your concern. We strong suggest you use the Parental controls and delete the person from the 3DS Friend List. Furthermore there is also a Filter Note feature on Swapnote that allows you to block notes from anyone." I would much fine with that than just the randomly cancelling of Swapnote. And why didn't Nintendo just give a heads up? They coulda been like, "In a few hours or tomorrow we will cancel Swapnote. Please use this remaining time as you wish." That woulda softened the blow SOMEWHAT than just cancelling it.
And then there's the fact that special stationary is gone.... Like, REALLY? No more epic Aonuma notes? No more Reggie notes? No more Shigeru Miyamoto notes? No more notes from Nikki????
We won't get FlipNote 3D and Miiverse 3D for a good long while so how are we supposed to connect to certain 3DS users we don't see face to face until those apps come? Swapnote gave a great way of communication and now...its just dead. I feel like deleting the app but I just can't. Something tells me to hang on this app like a bittersweet memory. I'll click on it one day and scroll through all the replies and special stationaries... I'll reread Aonuma's note about Zelda and read one of my friends notes about Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and his/her life in general...
I'm somewhat comforted that I'm not the only one really sad by this. Various other forums are having people discuss the situation and they are also saddened by this.
Rest in peace, Swapnote. You was a great and highly popular app for the 3DS. You had incredible worth and people loved you for it. Sadly... you are now a shadow of your former self. You lost all purpose because of some jerks who disgraced your name. insert a image of Nikki waving at the 3DS user of Swapnote and saying, "Hi! Welcome to Swapnote!" insert a image of Shigeru Miyamoto doing his funny Luigi's Mansion 3D promotion stationary insert a image of Swapnote saying, "You have recieved a new note!"
RIP, man. RI-freaking-P.
@mystman12 The Smash Bros. community (I think) will get it the worse with comments like "Swapnote is dead, bring it back" and "Nikki, I loved you so much, Nintendo, bring back Swapnote".
I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!
I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!
This is pathetic. I understand Nintendo wants to protect their service and users, but this is going too far. I have been cussed out by kids in Call of Duty and other games on my PS3, does that mean Sony should go shutoff voice chat to protect users? The harsh reality of using any online service is that sometimes unpleasant things and people will pop up to cause trouble. Should we shutdown Miiverse, Xbox Live, PSN, Facebook, and other services like that because of that threat?
I know people were abusing the service, but this punishes innocent people who were using the service properly. Swapnote was a good way to inform people about online games or to chat.
I know Nintendo is trying to protect their image, but this is just going too far. If the issue is people sending sexual images to kids, then find those people and lock them up. Their 3DS still has an ip address. Surely something better could be done than this. Why punish innocent consumers who did nothing wrong?
I was planning to use this service alot after Smash 4 came out to setup matches. This just sucks, plain and simple.
I really want to thank all the jerks who ruined this service. I hope you are all happy.
Relax guys. The miiverse and flipnote are coming eventually.
Though something bugs me. For those of you with friends from afar...how did you get their code in the first place? I doubt this was by chance... My point is surely there are other means of communication...

Some 3DS users exchange with people randomly and thanks to Swapnote... those people become friends. Example: I got some 3DS friend codes from high school. I'm in college now. My friends and I would send messages to each other and have fun. I don't have their number. I don't have a Facebook. I don't have a Twitter. I don't know how to contact them anymore. Sure, they will appear on online but everyone gets online at random times. Imagine going to your Friend list and seeing that your friend was online just a few minutes ago but logged off... Wouldn't that really suck? You can't do anything. Without Swapnote, whats our best choice? Wait for two apps we most likely won't get for a good long time? Yes, I am overexaggerting how long Nintendo will release those apps but it still sucks.
How are we gonna contact each other until those apps come?
Another popular example is that most 3DS users exchange friend codes at Gamestop and other places like this site just because that other person also has a 3DS. Its fun to meet someone knew and you bond with them via Swapnote.
Not anymore...

They will come eventually. Just be patient. Keep in mind this decision was never to spite you or anyone else (aside from the idiots who created this mess).

I mean, yeah it's stupid that they just randomly pulled the service like that, but it's not like it was a particularly great service to begin with. I mean, yes it was great but...ugh. How can I phrase this? What I'm trying to say is it's not something to cry about. I mean, some of you guys seem to have been more emotionally invested in this app than you should have been...it was great, but it's not like it's the only way to communicate, you know?
no, it's just more personal than sending a text message. i was attached to it because it basically let me send a handwritten note to my wife, who takes my working out of town very hard. i don't blame nintendo, and we'll replace it with something else. i just think it's lame.
@TeeJay: You have a point but for some of us, Swapnote WAS the only way we had to communicate with certain 3DS friends. This is just so sudden and unexpected. It feels unfair.
You guys... are panicking too much. Swapnote/Nintendo Letter Box itself isn't discontinued... only its SpotPass features. The app is still usable, and remains available on the Nintendo eShop. The only thing that changed is that Nintendo simply "grounded" the app to become used for strictly LAN messaging via StreetPass (similarly to PictoChat was like once). The app isn't as "dead" as you lot are exaggerating it to be.
Additionally, I have confidence that Nintendo are working on something to update the app in order to avoid such issues which led to the app's online capabilities getting demised.
Wishing this world would pay any sort of attention to the smaller details.

Well the good news is if the Miiverse is like the WIi U's version, then you can exchange written notes that way too...and using a better system to boot. Unlike swapnote, you can keep a written conversation going both ways in Miiverse

Excuse me for my yelling but... HOW IS THIS APP NOT DEAD?! WHO REALLY USES THE STREETPASS ON SWAPNOTE TO COMMUNICATE??? You can't even send replies to Streetpass notes!! You can only send one Streetpass note at a time! That isn't a good way to commuicate! The SPOTPASS FEATURE ALLOWED people to send messages and replies using any Wifi spot that had Internet!! It was soo much easier because it was based solely on a Internet connection!
Nintendo cancelled special stationary! No more Nikki! No more Aonuma! No more Miyamoto! Nore more cool designs for the holidays!
Most importantly.. No easy way to communicate with friends!
THOSE FEATURES ARE ALL GONE!!!
THIS APP IS DEAD!
And again... sorry for the yelling and all caps but I'm just really passionate about this app.
