The quality of this year's 3DS games from Nintendo might not quite stack up to last year (which is understandable, since last year was amazing), but there's no reason to expect an unannounced surprise, since quantity wise, their output this year is on par with last year (if you count published titles).
2013:
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Lego City Undercover: the Chase Begins (published)
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Pokémon X/Y
Mario Party: Island Tour
the Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
2014:
Bravely Default (published)
Professor Layton & the Azran Legacy (published)
Yoshi's New Island
Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Mario Golf: World Tour
Tomodachi Life
Pokémon Art Academy
Pokémon OR/AS
Fossil Fighters: Frontier (published?)
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
While last year had more quality, they're output this year has been on par with last year (counting published titles), at 10 games each.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
2013 and 2014 have been a disappointment for me (so far). only retail release that was a must buy for me was animal crossing. but hey that still keeps me busy!
this year will be fanatsy life and next year monster hunter 4.
i am happy that the eshop has so many great games though. and i still need to play some old 3DS games like splinter cell and ace combat.
All fair points. Smash is a game I'd honestly prefer to play on a home console with those HD visuals but I'd liked what I've seen of the 3DS version more particularly with the stages and the visual style. I could be overestimating it because at first I wasn't interested by the 3DS release at all but they seem to have gone above and beyond a simple watered down portable version and made what could almost be a stand alone entry in the franchise. I'm still looking forward to the Wii U version for sure but it's going to have to work a little harder to impress me, I think both versions will be worth it in the end though.

I will end up getting both versions too, but I am more excited for the Wii U version. In fact the release schedule works for me, as I will be getting the 3DS version day 1. Had both been released at the same time, I would have gone for the console version and leave the 3DS in the list of future games. Also that I won't get the Pokémon games in November, so this will help me fill a 3DS void during the holidays.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
I still have 14 more eShop games to get before the year is over.
The lack of more big first party stuff is not a huge issue for me.
I actually own every 3DS game I want that's out right now, with only two on the horizon that I want to get. I still don't feel like I'm lacking. As a wise man once said: "What drought? I can't see anything over my backlog."
I'm so happy this is being localized in North America. Too bad it comes out on my sister's birthday so I'll feel terrible if I spend money on something for myself that day
S.T.E.A.M got classified in Australia, so it might come out sooner than we thought.
I thought Australia just immediately classified everything as M as soon as the ratings board caught wind that it may or may not have simulated mischief.

Australia's Classification Board is good for leaks and bans only. Seriously, Earthbound got rated M (Equivalent of PG-13), as did Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. as did games as violent as Uncharted or Batman: Arkham City! Our classification is a mess...
