Then head over to Training Mode to learn some of the newcomers.
I never use training mode to learn new characters, I immediately jump into a 1-on-1 with a CPU. It's better for getting a feel of how the character plays in a real match.

Different people learn in different ways. While some people jump into a match and figure things out on the fly, others learn better in Training mode where they have time to try each move separately and see what can chain into what and how far they can take it. I remember that I learned Wolf by searching YouTube for tips and then going into training to see if I could nail his recoveries. After that, I went all out against Lvl 9 Kirby until I knew I could use Wolf against my friend (who was letting me borrow his copy of Brawl, at the time.)
Actually (outside of lol item shenanigans XD), I rarely use Training Mode myself in Brawl and I never used it in Melee or 64; but over the Smash years, I've found myself to be a Jack-of-all-trades player. Great with the majority but not expertly with any "one" in particular.
Which is why I'll quickly go into training for Smash 4 to get to know certain newcomers better. Namely Palutena (Specials), Shulk (Monado Arts/Specials), and Robin (Tome/Levin Sword Limits). I could definitely jump into a fight with the likes of Little Mac or Mega Man perfectly fine but I know that the ones that feel more complicated to me need analysing.
I'm going straight to training mode and trying each of the starter characters one-by-one.
That's what I plan to do too. Training mode is so fun, you can spawn anything you want and the CPU is your personal punching bag to wail on all you like! I'm surprised so many people here don't use it.
Right after that I'm going straight to Classic mode with Bowser to unlock Bowser Jr.

Didn't 3DS last year do better than this? Everything is as expected.
"They played us like a damn fiddle!" - MGS5
"Finish your mission, prove your loyalty." - MGS3
"We could take a s*** on you from such a height, you'd think God himself has crapped on you!" - GTA: SA
Currently Playing: The Phantom Pain.
Question to anyone who has the game: are there any trophies based on eShop characters? For example, Pullblox, Sakurai Samurai and (in particular) Dillon's Rolling Western?
I'm guessing at least Dillon has a trophy since he's an AT.
