Watched my friend play this game for the first time over a couple of beers and let me say this: He absolutely loved it!

I was so glad because he hasn't liked anything Nintendo related since the N64 and even then he was a hardcore Playstation supporter during that time, but man o' man he devoured into this game like nobody's business. For the longest time he was of the mindset that Nintendo was just a kids company and real video games were played on Xbox and Playstation consoles, but after he lost himself in Super Mario 3D Land and a few bottles of his favorite brew he agreed that it was time to kick the ol' habit and dive right into a 3DS and Super Mario 3d Land.

Good times!

It's a really fun game, and I'd say it probably belongs in every 3DS owner's collection, but it personally isn't even in my top 5 games for the system.

Again, it is a fun game & all, but It simply didn't leave the same impression on me that Super Mario World or Super Mario Galaxy did, and I don't find myself constantly going back to it like I did with New Super Mario Bros. on DS. There just seems to be "something" missing, and I can't exactly say what it is.

A complete lack of creativity maybe? :P 3D Land doesn't have it's own distinct style, it's like NSMB gone 3D with borrowed elements from Mario's previous old school outings(SMB3 especially). It controls wonderfully, it plays great, the stage design is fun along with the bowser boss battles and the stereoscopic 3D effect really shines, but it's bogged down by it's lack of identity, it just feels like another mario game and doesn't come close to having the same impact the same way 1,2,3,World, 64, Galaxy(not a fan of this one but it's original!) ect, it's a 3D Mario that reuses so many ideas of the mario jello-mold. Plus the 30 frames per second hurt the experience imo. Still a great game! and it controls better than galaxy ever did. ;) Personally I'd 8.5 it.

With that out of the way, 3D Land is still the greatest representation of Mario morphing from 2D-3D for so many reasons over the others, so it also has that going for it which i'm sure will gel well with oldschool mario fans rather than those that are more into the exploration based 3D mario titles.

I don't want to just repeat what other people say but one of the few Game Grumps eps. I've watched recently had Egoraptor sum it up pretty well. Basically, that people didn't like the old Mario games because they were old. They liked them because in the late 80s/early 90s Mario 3/World were new game! That's why people liked it! So new Mario should try to be actual new Mario titles instead of trying to be old Mario.

That's true. Completely. 3D Land' thinks people liked Mario 3 because it's Mario 3 rather than people liked Mario 3 because of how much it expanded and improved upon the original game, to the point that they are too very different games. Considering the vast difference between 3 of the 4 3D titles before it, I can see people's disappointment. Though, 3D Land (and especially World) at least have the novel idea of "what if a 2d Mario was in 3D?" and both the level design and music didn't feel off.

But I'm kinda sick of talking about it. And I don't want to insult the 3D Land team. They're a great team, they made the Galaxy games, they made Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. They're an awesome team and if they're allowed to think outside of the box again (which they're...half doing with 3D World), I'm sure the series will be fine. But another 3D Land is not needed for any reason.

I'm really hoping to see some kind of Super Mario Land 3D on the 3DS before long. I know the chances are slim and we will probably see a New Super Mario Bros 3 before we see a Mario 3D Land part 2, but I'm hopeful at the very least.

By far the best portable Mario game ever released. It's a charming gem of a platformer, makes full use of the stereoscopic 3D and helped save the 3DS in 2011. It's not the best Mario game ever made, but it is definitely one of my top 5 3DS games.

I like Super Mario 3D Land - 3DS but was not that impressed when I paid $39.99 for the game & literally beat it in 3 week's of the game being released. Before I got my 3DS all the Mario game's I had played prior to the 3ds where Super Nintendo Mario games (Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario World, & etc). I was use to a mario game on my super nintendo taking me around a year or two to beat if not longer but this whole beating a mario game in 3 week's came as shocker to me because I've never beat any mario game THAT fast before EVER. I decided when i got my 3ds I would start playing the mario games again & that was my first mario game on my 3ds. I was really shocked back then plus also shocked at the fact Super Mario 3D Land - 3DS has easy, medium, & hard mode. I'm sorry but I don't ever remember there being an easy, medium, & hard mode on any of the mario super nintendo games back then but who know's.

Bottom line I liked the game but if it has a sequel I don't know if I would bother to buy the sequel even though i liked the original mainly because of how short in gameplay the original actually was at least for me. :(

Happy Gaming! (^_^)

That does a great job of summing it up, not to mention we have the New super Mario Bro's series that does exactly that of giving that 2D mario feel without much changes just polished for modern day. Im not saying they are bad games either, i have played all the Wii and Wii U ones because they are fun, but i still want those other mario games as well that have there own identity .

It took you a year to beat Super Mario World? Its never taken me much longer than a month or two to beat any Mario game, even Super Mario 64 only took me only about a month when I first got it back in 1998 or so. I do go back and replay games, especially Mario games since there is so much hidden stuff to find so they always have replay value for me.

But yeah, a good Mario game shouldn't take longer than a few weeks to beat if you put the time into it.

I liked the game alot and this is coming from someone who is not a fan of 3D Mario games. I actually liked NSMB2 more than Super Mario 3D Land but for me both games were so short compared to other Mario games. Also the one thing that I was a fan of in SM3DL was the fact that you needed the Star Coins or whatever they were to be able to unlock certain castles and such. I am not big on collecting a bunch of stuff. I understand why they did it that way but I would have liked it better if they just made it where you can advance even if you didn't collect the stars (or whatever it was I can't remember now).

Still I would suggest this game to anyone who has a 3DS or 2DS if they don't have it already and I am looking forward to SM3DW on the Wii U.

I did put quite an extensive time into all my super nintendo video games. As far as I ever got in both Mario All Stars & Super Mario World was half way through both games never finished them back then because couldn't get past a few level's beyond the halfway mark in both games but I did put quite a bit of time into my super nintendo video games. Back then it was my favorite console before we got the wii system. :)

To be honest in any other game I don't mind easy, medium, & hard mode but in Super Mario 3D Land - 3DS I was kind of insulted by it. Like I said it was my first mario game on my 3ds & the other mario games I played were on super nintendo back then. On the super nintendo there was no easy, medium, & hard mode in the mario games. For me like I said I like Super Mario 3D Land - 3DS but felt it was just way to easy & yes I played on all 3 modes easy, medium, & hard & aced everything that there was in the game to unlock in the 3ds version.

I'm replaying this game now, as I often replay my games, and I'm enjoying it just as much on this second run. This game is truly a joy to play and an iconic entry into the 3DS library, so much better than any console game I've played in several years.

Thanks Nintendo!

Man, the final 2-3 levels of this game were difficult and that false ending was so misleading before you get to 8-6 and the real final dungeon. But what a way to finish the game and unlock those extra worlds. God I love this game!

After completing Luigi's Mansion 2, i have a new appreciation of how great Super Mario 3D Land is. :P not to say Luigi's Mansion 2 was bad, it was far from it! But i don't think it's worthy of the 9's it's been receiving. It looks amazing visually, possibly being the most gorgeous looking 3DS game there is....But was it as fun and inventive as the first Luigi's Mansion? Nope, i didn't think so.

Like i mentioned in another thread, the lack of 2nd analog free roaming C-Stick vacuum controls, tedious chore-like mission based game play instead of exploring one giant mansion, the step down 30 frames per second and generic looking crappy De Blob-Pac man looking ghosts Vs the creepy polygon riddled Casper-inspired ghosts in the original made it a wee' bit dissapointing. Still one of the better 3DS experiences i've had as of late, but it aint got nothing on Super Mario 3D Land, or the first Luigi's Mansion. ;)

Super Mario 3D Land is probably the best controlling 3D Mario to date, it makes it an absolute blast just to pick up and play or speed run through levels, which i cannot say the same for the slow burning Galaxy games. :P

Super Mario 3D Land could possibly be one of the funnest and most addicting games I've played since the late 90's. I've spent hours on this game trying to find every "star coin" in every level while replaying levels I've enjoyed over and over again, and don't even get me started on the special worlds which are both exciting and challenging to play. This game truly deserves every bit of positive press it received and it a true masterpiece within the annals of video gaming, I would say that this is the best Super Mario game since Super Mario 64 and deserves a spot in any and every 3DS owners library. If you don't own this game and yet you are in possession of a 3DS.......shame on you.
