I saw a report on IGN or somewhere of the overseas versions running a system update before playing the game. When I started my copy of SM3DL today, too (in the U.S.) it updated my system. Does anyone know exactly what it updated? Also, is the update just for players of SM3DL or will it be available to everyone? Thanks...

Thanks! So that explains it. It installs an anti-flashcart update and overhauls the friends list so we can join in on their online games (cool! i wonder how limited it is, though) and this is separate from the huge system update coming later this month that includes the 3ds transfer tool, bigger update to friends list and more.

How long does it take to install the update? I know that installing an update already downloaded is pretty much instant - how long does it take from a cart?

The update installs in about a minute, not long at all. Looking at the friends list I see no big changes. I wonder how you join a friends game? I don't see any noticeable changes after the 'update', it probably just blocks flash carts and that's the main update.

In your friends list, look at the top of the touchscreen. You should see an icon that says "Join Game". This allows you to join the game your friend is currently playing online.
Okay...but can you explain how it actually works? Like give me an example of what happens when I click that button and my friend's playing Street Fighter. I have to have my game in too, right? It will just launch the game from there and take me straight to the online match mode? If it just takes you to the title screen then it's pointless, but I don't see how the 3DS would know how to find the online menu in every game either.

Honestly I don't know all of those details. I don't have any online-multiplayer cartridge games for my 3DS.
Ive got plenty of Online games but dont have Super Mario Land, I gues I will have to wait until the late November update to try it out. But I have a thought about the join button... With current online games I would imagine it would just work like the Launch button does on the Notifacations and just open up the game, but with later releases like Mario Kart 7 I would expect that it would enable you to join the current game in progress like it did on the wii, where you would spectate the current game until it is over or wait in a lobby if spectate isnt available and then join the next available online match/game.

@Tare - I have tried updating manually because I had been having some problems accessing the eShop yesterday and thought that may solve it, but no im still on the older firmware. Cant wait for the November update... but I think Swapnote is coming in December in time for Christmas.

That's a shame. I suppose as a last resort, if you had a friend with a 3DS, and SM3DL, ask if you could use the cartrdige to update your system.
But in all honesty, the e-shop isn't too exciting as of late. As long as you've downloaded your ambassador games and Link's 4 swords adventure, you aren't missing much.
