I'm only in World 4 now, but I'm already finding that this game has an obnoxious tendency to disprove my pre-release criticisms. I just want validation, dangit! Please fail in the ways I told you to do so.

@anybody: Are the Special Worlds in Super Mario 3D Land new, or just harder versions of the original adventure? I'd prefer new, but regardless, I'm still going through them

Most of the special worlds' levels are based on levels from the normal worlds, but with the core components remixed, completely changed, or replaced with something else. Typically it's the same layout with a new "theme", and it doesn't feel at all like the level you played before. And they're also a lot harder. Some have Prankster Comet-esque challenges that add to the tension.
I'd love to be a kid waiting on Christmas again, instead of a jaded adult who can pick up games at will yet doesn't then have the time to play them : -/

This game has earned the number 2 spot in my favorite Mario games of all time (right next to Super Mario World.) why the only flaw I can find in this game is the lack of variety in music. Would have been nice to hear some other classics done up in a new style but oh well. Regardless, still one of the few great games I've played all year.

Title:How Many Star Medals are the in Super Mario 3D Land?
I got the game 1 day late from it's release, I beat the game from all of the normal stages, to the special stages, managed to get all Star Medals per each level, go 990 lives (gives me three crowns), unlocked bonus level in World 8 (Nintendo thank you level), got 5 stars on my file, & my death count is 0 (cause every time I die I reset the game by pressing "L+R+SELECT") But I keep hearing rumors that there is 999 Star Medals than the ones that I collected from each level.I have a total of 311 Star Medals, so is it that true???Cause I'm up for the challenge !I really appreciate it if you help me out on this one.Thank you !

@Tanookii There are probably around 275-300 stars hidden within the levels, but you can get up to 999 through the purple box challenges in the overworld map that appear from time to time. There isn't a need for you to do it though, since you've completed the game 100%.
@Eureka It's not the big update, just a small one that allows you to join friend's games via the friends list. It also patches some flashcard exploits and makes the friends list load a bit faster.
^ I don't believe the 999 Star Coins claim is correct; today, when going through the Purple Boxes, I got two blue Star Coins (indicating that I already got them), which means three things. One, that there is a set number of Star Coins, two, that the Streetpass function is really just to speed up the process of encountering them all, and third, that no Star Coins are permanently missable.
All I know is that I have less coins than Tanookii despite having collected all the coins in every level. Even though I got them all, I still sometimes find blue coins and yellow coins in purple boxes, seemingly based on luck. I've also heard of people with many more coins than Tanookii and I. It's a weird system for sure.
Could anyone with both games compare this too Rayman. Rayman will be on sale at gamestop next week for $40 and while I might be able to get $80, but if I have to choose which to get first.
