Hey wasn't sure wether to post this in the help section or the 3DS section, so I posted it in both, if its in the wrong spot please delete it! anyways I have this problem:
One night I shut my 3DSXL to enter it into sleep mode, as per usual. the next morning when I opened it up the top screen was completely black, it still had volume from the game, the bottom screen is functional and working, and the top screen is backlit it's just completely black, however there are some rather strange things happening with the top screen so I'll go into detail about my findings:
-The night I closed it I was playing MH3U, something I did rather regularly, it may be worth loading that I shut my 3DSXL into sleep mode during a loading screen.
-Upon opening the 3DSXL approximately 7 hours later, the screen was black but the backlight, and sound were still functional, It was also picking up inputs as I was able to transition through another loading screen (Could tell through the change of music) bottom screen still displayed everything ordinary.
-3DSXL homescreen also displays the top screen as black.
-I tried restarting the 3DSXL as well as allowing the battery to completely empty before fulling charging it and starting it up, issue was not fixed.
-While trying different things I noticed that if I was playing a classic DS game the screen would work, however the colors would display strangely, most things being yellow, cyan and light grey with some magenta.
-Further testing this I was able to establish that anything or any game that is NOT capable of displaying in 3D would display but in the aformentioned strange colors. I was able to establish this through pokemon X/Y Because the overworld doesn't allow 3D, so I was able to see, however upon entering a 1 on 1 battle (Where 3d is toggleable) the screen would go back to being black and I wouldn't be able to see, intruiged I went into a double battle (where 3d is disabled) and it displayed with the strange colors.
At this point in time my warranty is already about two years expired, and I'm already planning on buying the New 3DS when it's released in NA, as such I have no interest in sending it in for a 90$ repair, and I've no digital games worth saving to transfer. I would like to ask if anybody has any suspicions on what can be causing it (loose ribbon? fried display?) and if I would be able to fix it myself (I have very limited knowledge on this kind of thing so any help would be greatly appreciated) I have nothing to lose at this point wether I accidentaly break it or not, but it would be nice if I was able to get it in working order.
Yeah, you probably could do a system transfer if you wanted. You may be able to make things easier by going into parental controls and disabling the 3D, since that would probably cause the top screen to function better.
don't really need to system transfer, just wondering if anyone has any knowledge here on the innards of a 3ds and whether it could be as simple as reseating the ribbon for the top screen or not before I dismantle it Either way I'm stuck until the New 3DS is released in North America, so it's more of a thing to try and pass the time.
This problem happened to my current 3DS, which occured 1 year ago due to pressure on the ribbon. A local store of mine identified the problem when I let them apply a test to tilt the screen back and forth to see it occur. I'm actually going to get mine fixed in February for a small fee, due to my 3DS warranty running out, so all the best to you, too.
3DS games:

Crime doesn't pay, unless you are really good at it then those who are legal criminals ...
