Here is a video explaining what you'd expect from Steel Diver.

TRAILER

There are three gameplay modes (one being multiplayer) that will be the offerings of Steel Diver

Naval Battle Mode

  • turn-based gridded strategy gam
  • unable to see your opponent's ships at the start
  • download play supported
  • two-player game
  • each player has a set of submarines, freighter ships and escort ships
  • submarines are the only ships that can enter enemy territory
  • escort ships can attack enemy subs who've crossed over
  • freighters can't engage in combat, and if all freighters are sunk it's game over
  • game starts by moving your subs into enemy territory
  • guess where enemy ships might be
  • map is marked in pink and yellow, which indicates areas that might have enemy ships
  • use sonar to get a better idea of where enemy ships are, but this also gives away your position
  • switches to periscope mode for attacks
  • If you end up being spotted, your submarine will come under attack by the enemy escort ships

Submarine mode

  • features 3 subs
Manatee ND-01: Capable of firing torpedoes upwards.
Blue Shark ND-03:Can fire two torpedos. Also has control for changing angle.
Serpent ND-05: Has the most fire power, with four torpedoes.
  • leaks may form if you're hit by mines or torpedoes
  • this causes you to lose control of your submarine
  • use the stylus to touch the area that's leaking and plug the lea

Periscope mode

  • ships attack above and below water
  • sonar is best used for underwater enemies, since visibility is bad
  • do battle in storms, which impact aiming

I have to admit, the more I see this game, the more interesting it looks. I'm actually pretty excited to get the chance to review this one. Should be fun.

Plain old gamer :)

HolyMackerel

Wow, that's a lot of different modes. This gets better and better.

I hope it's anything as good as In the Hunt was.

This game is pretty good and I think if it sells well, it might be one of those DS games to be good but only see a sequel or 2

Yeah, I think steel diver looks O.K., but I'll have to wait for a review. Come on 3DS!

I wasn't interested in Steel Diver until now.

It looks awesome!

This game needs more friends. It does look pretty neat, I hope the core mechanics are good and it has multiple levels which I'm sure it will. Replay Value is my main concern with any Nintendo game.

Yeah I'm going with what he says...looks interesting...but, I dunno yet. Got other games to deal with anyways, some of them aren't even 3DS related. xD

Steel Diver isn't terribly interesting in the visual department, but it looks like a whole lot of fun to me

So is naval battle mode a bit like battleships then? That could be interesting.

Fuzzy, Backloggery.

Hmmm, this game looks actually pretty interesting. I might pick it up for cheap in a bargain bin, or for at least $30.

Also, I want to be honest...I kept reading the title as "Steel Driver". xD

This game keeps looking better and better. Still not sure if it will be a day one purchase as SF and Star Wars are the games I AM buying.

Great deals on the Nintendo 3DS at http://www.nintendo3dsshops.com

OldBoy

Yawn...that looks so dull it's untrue.Still I'll see what the reviews are like before I completly rule it out.

What's this bit for again?

moosa

Wow... I never thought this game was much for graphics, but those are some NICE looking waves... o.o

Read this Iwata Asks interview with Miyamoto-san for more info about the thoughts behind this game:

Although there are clear similarities, this is definitely not that type of game. Miyamoto said he wanted to create a simulation-type game rather than an action game. Even if Steel Diver isn't exactly "realistic," his intent was to create a game about controlling something large and slow using levers and knobs and such.
That being said, as a fan of 2D shooters myself that game looks awesome.

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.

I wonder what he was talking about at the end when he was mentioning ds/ds lite/dsi/dsi ll?

I tried it in periscope mode at gdc. graphics are decent but controls felt funny. It wouldn't rotate the screen until you stopped the water holes that appear each time after being hit. It got annoying when every few seconds you get hit from behind and you don't even get a chance to fight back. It's not for me. Maybe the other modes are better but it'll take some convincing for me.

KarrotMan

Famitsu scores are up. And that includes Steel Diver's score.

Powerful Golf (DS) – 8/8/8/8
Steel Diver (3DS) – 7/7/8/8
Splinter Cell 3D (3DS) – 7/7/8/8

Note that 75% is still a good score, but I'm sure some are disappointed with that. I'm still waiting out for more detailed reviews before I take the bite. For me, this game seems like a slow paced tactical simulation/platforming game which I am interested in. I hope this game is more well received in the West.

This game had piqued my interest long before now, but it still seems to get more interesting the more I hear about it. We'll see...

I'm pretty sure I think I'm funnier than I really am.
