I would like to excite your imagination a bit. Allow me and bear with me as i explain.

The technology our 3DS is using for auto-stereoscopy, is with 99% certainty, capable of producing auto-stereoscopic effect from ANY true 3D game. (not for 2D games) If Nintendo provides us with a cool system update that would allow all your 3D games from DS to become auto-stereoscopic (honest to god it is very much possible no BS here) can you imagine what would happen then?

Why didn't they do it? are they stupid? ofc not.

There could be a performance issue because a tiny separate software needs to run over your game and extract certain info from the rendering pipeline, such as Z-buffer, BUT DS games are showing much lower resolution 3D modelstextures and final rendering than 3DS is capable of, so this might not really be a problem at all. There might be an issue with true multitaskingmultithreading though. Also maybe not all games would be able to provide you with that information in the way you need it. So 3D possibly wouldn't work with all games. But even if it worked for half, it would be awesome!

(this is not pulled from you know where, i have worked with such technology and i have for a long time been playing all my PC games in stereoscopic 3D with just a tiny driver which doesn't even take 5% processing power back when N64 and GC was out. on NT 4.0 and windows 98 and till today. All you need is the proper screen, which we have, and a tiny piece of software.)

I say if it's truly possible, maybe you could work on something and submit it to Nintendo, so maybe they could release a system update, or maybe even the old-fashioned Cartridge-that-holds-a-DS-cartridge type thing.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Nintendo doesn't take fan suggestions.

Aw.

i'm not a fan, but unfortunately due to reasons i can't disclose, it is not possible to do any R&D on 3DS :C

DS games weren't designed for 3D. An update will not change that.

Someone obviously doesn't know how different the software between DS and 3DS games is.

3DS games were DESIGNED for 3D (or at least most of them). DS games were not.

jerryo

it depends on the engine.

the majority of game engines define the depth for various effects and other functions from the zbuffer.
i.e. fog density.

Untitled
this also defines various aspects of the 3D effect in most auto-stereoscopic technologies.
i.e what is in front, what is back etc.

now if you have an engine that gives you that value, then you have the first most important element
to create a stereoscopic image. the rest you need is a second render and superimposing the two images
in a manner based on the zbuffer value gives you the auto-stereoscopic effect.

@OP 2D is 2D. 3D is 3D.

i do not know your background,
but if you search a bit more, you will find that this is very much possible for about 10 years now.

first do your research then talk about it. i can give you a lead. 4d vision.
It was the company i was working with.
(this company has now been absorbed and their technology is re-branded by DDD. before Avatar,
this was an almost dead market.)

Toshiba had brought laptops with this technology about 8 years ago. all your games and 3D apps were trully 3D without glasses. They were expensive and nobody cared about 3D back then.

... and there's your problem. if it won't work for all DS games, I'll bet Nintendo won't bother with it.

Not update DS games. you do not understand what i am saying. you do not NEED to update a game. It only needs to give you a z-buffer value. The game stays as is. the additional software grabs the output and zbuffer value where available and does the rest of the job. it is not really as complex as you may think.

and Aviator, you are mistaken tell me based on what experience you say that?

jerryo

@jerryo: i'm not talking about updating games at all — i was just saying that if the method you describe will not work for all DS games, Nintendo probably won't bother with it.

well that is a different problem.
but it doesn't mean it is not possible. as long as the engine supports z buffer extraction then it is very much possible.
the whole technology is really on the display and not the software. on the software you must make sure that you exploit the z buffer properly. the more detailed your zbuffer result the higher detail the 3D effect. (i.e. Street Fighter) if your z output is flat values it will still be 3D but less detailed. resulting in bad quality 3D such as those movies that do 3D as an afterthought.

you will see that capcom will have higher quality 3d than anyone, because it is the only company apart from nintendo who really understands how nintendo hardware rendering works and how to squeeze it properly.

no, it doesn't mean it's not possible, but Nintendo's about the whole package. if something won't work exactly the way they want it to, they won't release it to the public.

that said, if you'd like to bug or beg Nintendo to do something, you're more than welcome to take it straight to them — if you'd attempt putting together a proof of concept they may actually listen to you. good luck!
