Depends what they mean by "new". I hope it's just the official announcement for 7 and 8 on 3DS. That would make my day!

A Japanese Magazine like Jump isn't going to report on a Western event. It's gotta be something for Japan, and they said "the first main Dragon Quest title in three years". Guess what came out 3 years ago? Dragon Quest X. It's all but confirmed now.

Honestly, the development cycle of XV is more offensive to me. I think Nomura just came into work and played Tetris all day for 5 years.

I wish. He may as well have, considering how much of the actual work involved the digital equivalent of smashing your head against the wall until something breaks...

I'm not the biggest Tetsuya Nomura fan but give him a break. He had a crazy cool idea for Final Fantasy Versus.... which is now Final Fantasy XV. Him and his team was probably juggling alot with development. I still wish he was the director.

I'm more curious about what system it will be on. X sold decently enough for an MMO and I can see them sticking with WiiU since WiiU is selling decently in Japan and the west doesn't play DQ according to Squeenix.

Yes you are, don't be shy.

Seriously though, I'm not sure why anyone would want him to still be the director, fan or not. He simply was not getting any work done. He spent years wasting SE's time and money. Now that the game is out of his hands, it actually has a chance of being released this decade. That is, if anything from his game beyond assets is even being used at this point. There was that report a while back that his vision for Versus XIII was tossed in the scrap heap.

It's the mood shift. The tone shift from Final Fantasy Versus to Final Fantasy XV is very noticeable. I know Square Enix claims not much has changed from the shift but that tone shift... I'm still very interested and eager for Final Fantasy XV though. I feel like Nomura was getting work done too but ran into problems. I can't help but feel Nomura's version of Episode Duscae would've been way more impressive than Tabata's version. And that's not a shot against Tabata. He's great too.

Putting it on PS4 makes no sense at all. It's been on par with the Wii U in Japan and Dragon Quest isn't that strong in the west.

Except Dragon Quest X sold really poorly on the Wii U, and they also said it would be on a home console. The only other choice besides the PS4 is the PS3...and more than likely it'd be on both platforms in that case.

The game won't even be out for another couple of years. Wii U will probably be done by then. PS4 outsold it last year, even in Japan, and is way ahead again this year.

Not really a tone shift so much as it being a completely different game. FFvXIII wasn't renamed. It was canned. And Tabata made a couple OK PSP games, yes. Nomura also made an OK PS2 game like 10 years ago. So I'm sure the product that eventually gets released will be more or less the same in quality as it would have been.

Except that the Wii U is winding down in Japan and the PS4 is picking up. If it's on PS3 and PSV as well, there will be up to 20 million systems in the wild to put it on. And you say that DQ isn't that strong in the west, but if it has any chance at all, it's on PS4. At the least, it can easily outsell the last couple of Final Fantasy games in NA/EU.

Aww, they said home console? Bummer. Like it matters, Squeenix is horrible lately with localizations anyway

Horii sort of said home console. It was a translation from Japanese to French to English, and as far as I know, the original word actually used was more similar to 'platform' or 'system.' He did not specifically say home console (even though that is likely).

Doesn't XV contain the same characters, world, and plot as Versus XIII? I didn't think that they had hard reset everything. Although I guess they might as well have; over a decade in development, was it? #FinalFantasyForever

Characters - Mostly. Though it remains to be seen whether or not they're really the same characters or just sharing names and appearance for marketing reasons. At least one character has been cut though (Stella) and several others have been changed significantly.
World - Hard to say. It was initially envisioned as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis universe though, and now it isn't.
Plot - No. I don't think much of anything is surviving from the original scenario. At the very least, heavy rewrites are going on and it's possible that the script is being redone entirely.

What it looks like is that as much of Nomura and Nojima's work was salvaged as possible and Tabata was brought in to make a new game out of it. In the meantime, they're using a clever trick to make it look like they're deep in development: releasing, patching, and rereleasing a demo multiple times. It's unlikely to release before 2017.

If you have the original source (Japanese), I could translate it.

The original interview was oral between a French interviewer, Yuji Horii speaking in Japanese, and a translator. The transcript is posted in French, so I don't think we have the Japanese that Horii actually spoke.

There's a very long discussion of it on Gaf: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1074920

The interview specifically says "console de salon," or home/living room console. However, this is an inference of the interviewer. Yuji Horii himself said "console" in a very broad sense. A poster on that thread speculates that the phrase he used was "テレビゲーム," (page 10) which means TV game, but is widely used for video games in general, handheld included. If the interviewer didn't know this, he may have just assumed that TV game meant home console.

Also, here is a Tweet from the interviewer: https://twitter.com/BastienPean/status/617015082283876356

He explains "Il ne dit pas "de salon" mais en parlant de DQ9 il précisait 'portable'. Il il parlait de manettes." Horii didn't say "salon" (living room), but in speaking of DQ9, he specified "portable." Based on this, Péan infers/assumes that Horii meant home console for DQ11, due to lack of specification.

It's complicated. Probably home console, but not 100%. Even if it is home console though, I consider the likelihood of it being PS4 exclusive very low.

EDIT: Oh, and full interview here, if you want to comb through it: http://www.ffring.com/news/Interview-Yuji-Horii-createur-de-D...

Yeah, I'll admit I only looked at various headlines when I saw that, since I was in a rush. There's probably still a shot for the 3DS, even if it'll totally be its swan song and completely miss the western boat yet again...honestly, I'm kind of hoping it'll be on PS systems. Even if it's not released in the states, they're not region-locked, so I can still play it...

Gist of it was that DQ10 set precedent being multiplat and it's coming out far enough in the future that SE would be wise to consider handheld NX (and perhaps home NX by extension) as a platform, as well as PS4 if they have any intention of heading west. It's not inconceivable to imagine DQ11 coming to PS4, PSV, and NX.

If it is DQ11, they must've really struggled to choose what system to target it for. 3DS does seem plausible. Given that it gets about 80% of its sales in Japan and given that Japan don't like home consoles, 3DS looks possible.
Of course maybe they're in talks with Sony and will use it to try and sell more PS4s in Japan. They'll be needing that for when FF15 comes out.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

The whole big plot of Noctis and Stella fighting each other even though they love each other... is gone. That's why people were so sad to see her gone. She was supposed to be a strong woman from a different kingdom that loved Noctis. Must I post the cool gifs of her and Noctis about to fight?

Actually, the PS4 version sold almost as well as the PS3 version at launch. That's nothing to sneeze at, considering how many more PS3s there are in Japan.
