Eh. I might download it eventually I guess. Sonic games have always been a disappointment despite how great the look like they will be initially so I'm not holding my breath.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
That's the kind of mindset you have to get into before playing this game. That was my first mistake, since this game is actually quite good as a game, just maybe not a typical Sonic game (which is understandable, as it is a spinoff).
About as awful as I expected. Doesn't play much like a Sonic game, and most of the speed is either scripted or reflex based (and in 2D, reflex based platforming doesn't really work that well).
Its... okay.
I kinda like the big fleshed out levels and the emphasis character abilities and exploration, but the game's feel is off. The character's feel all the same, disregarding their special abilities, same running speed and speed cap, same jump height, and even fall at the same speed. Not to mention the game seems to have a strange sense of momentum, the characters always seem to run their top speed without build up, and stop on a dime. It's... really weird. Other than that, the game looks cool. Its not day one imo, but it is definitely a game I'll pick when I can/feel like it.

I agree with almost all of this.
As an example, I thought Knuckles would have a heavier feel to his character, maybe not be able to jump as high, but he plays the exact same as everyone else.
Hopefully, these issues will be fixed by the full version, but I somehow doubt it. At worst, this'll just be an average, dare I say forgettable game. I don't expect anything atrocious to arise out of this, but this demo has me doubting about just how much I'll enjoy the full version...
I feel like the large, open level design is part of the problem with this game. With only a small side view of the level thanks to it being 2D, it's pretty hard to tell where you need to go, and you either have to memorize the level or just use trial and error to figure it out. It puts too much emphasis on exploration to the detriment of the speed.

I think your problem mostly comes from you trying to play it like a regular Sonic game, which it's not meant to be. The game isn't just about speed, it's about exploration and using all the different character's abilities to find secrets. The game will let you speed run if you want to, but that's not the point.
I came into this game fully aware it wasn't going to be a traditional Sonic game, which is probably why I'm not really negative towards it. It's all about expectations.
For what it's worth, I'm quite pleasantly surprised with what a new studio can do to shake up the Sonic formula while keeping it still sort of a Sonic game.

See, but I wouldn't go into the game expecting regular Sonic gameplay if it didn't try to convince me it's trying to be one. On the surface it looks like a standard 2D game, but the controls do not accommodate speed very well and the level design is too exploration focus. It comes very close to playing like an actual Sonic game that it feels like a failed attempt at one.

Have you ever played a Mega Man platformer that wasn't part of the classic series? A spin-off that is still part of the same genre is nothing new, and you're completely missing the point if you try to play it like a regular Sonic game.

It fails at being a spinoff though. A good spinoff gives us a fresh take on the original but retains the series' identity. In this case, that identity is speed. And this version doesn't really give us a fresh take on Sonic's speed, it gives us a watered down version of Sonic's speed. They're just taking random gameplay styles, slapping a Sonic aesthetic on it, and executing it terribly. Even if you ignore the speed, the exploration is watered down too and the map is nearly useless because it's so vague and doesn't load past a certain distance. It all adds up to a generic platformer with random different elements that are all executed poorly. It's a bad game from every angle.
So, for the people who haven't/won't download the demo, here is a brief description:
From the title menu, the game immediately opens onto a hub world with 5 locations. 2 of the locations are friendly 'houses' which have been locked for the demo, and the other 3 locations are playable stages. The stages can be classified as 'explore', 'run', and 'race'.
The 'explore' stage is the starting location for the demo, so naturally most players will attempt that stage first. One of the first big changes from a regular 2D Sonic game is that the characters have a more expansive moveset than previously. The days of ABXY = jump are over! For example, Sonic's actions are:
A: Use the energy-tether to swing from specific posts, remove energy shields, or activate a large slingshot
B: Jump, then double-jump or homing attack
X: When in mid-air, use a short burst similar to the ones in Sonic Rush
Y: Use your cough 'boost' ability, which has been weakened significantly from the Boost to Win generation
The stage is fairly large and will split into different paths based on which character you progress with. All characters are able to use the homing attack and energy tether as well as the mid-air burst, though only the Sonic burst will break blue blocks. You are able to switch seamlessly between 4 characters who use their 1 unique ability to access the different paths. In addition to Sonic, the playable characters are:
Tails: A nerfed green wisp (Hover!) that can also initiate a Steel Diver minigame
Knuckles: Literally the yellow wisp (Drill!)
Sticks: Stole the boomerang from Link in Phantom Hourglass. No other exceptional qualities (Void!)
Depending on how eager you are to collect all of the items (rings, gears, and crystal shards), this stage could last from 5 to 20 minutes. At the end of the stage you receive medals based on time and item acquisition. Some of these goals are mutually exclusive, so you'll need to replay the stage multiple times once the full game comes out. The demo does not save data, so just keep track of which medals you've earned for now.
The 'run' stage is the southwest stage, located directly after the Amy's house location. In this stage you control Sonic as you run through what is essentially a half-pipe while avoiding exposed wires and giant worms that are mostly aesthetic. At many points during the stage you will need to activate your energy-tether to ride a rail to the next segment of the stage. You are also able to use you 'boost' ability to speed up, however you are unable to switch lanes while at this speed. No quick step for you! The medals in this stage are received by reaching the goal fast enough, and for collecting all of the rings on the stage.
The 'race' stage is located northwest of the starting point, immediately after the locked Stick's house. This stage has you control Sonic and race against Sticks, the new character who for some reason runs just as fast as Sonic. This level is extremely similar to the rival stages in the 3DS Generations, only much easier. Sticks will follow Sonic and will only take the lead if you purposely stop and let her go by. There are higher and faster paths that you can take to get the medals for this stage, which are again for time and rings.
Fans of previous 3DS Sonic games will enjoy the 'race' and 'run' stages, as they are quite similar to past games and present a reasonable challenge when doing a blind run. The 'explore' stage will split fan opinion, though this is nothing new for Sonic fans. The game runs fairly well, and even though the homing lock-on is a bit stiff it almost feels better than the Lost World equivalent. Longtime Sonic fans will buy this game regardless, but players still on the fence should wait until the full game releases and then check the 'race'-'run'-'explore' ratio.
Sonic Colors 3: All My Friends are Wisps will be available on November 11th in the US and November 21st in the EU
