Topic: Social Media on the 3DS

More and more I have been hearing how the PSP Vita is more about a Social experience than the 3DS partialy due to the fact that you can use the Holy Trinity of social media apps... Facebook, Skype & Twitter on it. And when a 3DS owner like myself mentions you can access these on the 3DS you just get a barrage of fanboy flack in response.
Now granted, I dont have an issue with the Vita at all. As far as im concerned competion only goes to improve the further development of consoles and if it wasnt for any healthy competion we would probably be still playing Pong on tiny black and white TVs. But it has bothered me to a point that I felt that I neede to make this post.

Obviously the 3DS has no way of using Skype at the moment, who knows what may happen down the line, but presently there is no option of doing it. However, thanks to the on the fly internet browser, many social media apps and sites are readily available either directly (but not always working so great) or mobile optimised (that work fantastic).
So if your lucky enough to have access to plenty of free wifi you can use these apps pretty much everywhere. I dont know bout anywhere outside of the UK, but Nintendo have got 'Cloud' covered, which is pretty much most mainstream public houses and mcdonalds and such like and if you get your broadband through BT you have access to FON which lets you use other peoples FON wifi so you have most residential areas covered as well.

Anyhoo...
if you want to access Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, etc... using the browser, its worth bookmarking some of these sites -

Facebook - http://m.facebook.com/
Twitter - http://mobile.twitter.com/
foursqaure - http://m.foursquare.com/
ebay - http://m.ebay.com/
Wikipedia - http://mobile.wikipedia.org/
IMDB - http://m.imdb.com/
GameFaqs - http://m.gamefaqs.com/

...there are loads more like this but I think these are the essentials. I know Nintendo could do better but at least you can still use them albiet through the browser rather than their own app...
oh, dont forget you can upload your pics, even 3D pics via the browser so mobile Facebook works great out and about.

You can upload 3D pics to facebook using your 3DS? Wow, that's pretty cool. First I've heard of that!

I might have to try that out later............

Here in the USA Nintendo encouraged you to sync your Nintendo DSi to Facebook when you first turn on your DSi after opening it up fresh out of the box and thus when you took a photograph it could be sent to Facebook upon connecting to the internet.

I don't have a problem accessing facebook on my 3DS.

In fact, if you go to the Nintendo Video channel on the 3DS, there's an option in the right hand corner to "like this on facebook".

G'luck, gang!

You can Upload and download images using the 3DS browser and not just on Facebook.
I remember uploading photos using the DSi to Facebook, but the 3DS is so much easier.

Yes, this. Websites are such an archaic way to do social media.

OT: Okay...I hate to sound like a jerk, but is there much of a reason as for this thread to exist? I mean, it's nice to see people not being stupid and realizing that a web browser is all you need to access pretty much every major website, but are people oblivious to the fact that the 3DS has a web browser? Am I missing something?

@V8_Ninja, man, do you know that apps are like way up on the cool factor scale? Apps are the way of the world. It's a lot nicer to use an app because if I want a browser all I have to do is go on a PC and hop in a browser. So yes, I'm with the app on 3DS/Vita people on this one.

The 3DS' web browser isn't so great is the thing. Yeah, it's functional but it's somewhat slow and doesn't support Flash. I'd like to see a Facebook app. Youtube would be nice, but I feel like that's pushing it a little.

When I close my eyes, I see pixilated blood.

The 3DS needs apps, but I'm fine doodling around with this for now until Ninty gets its butt in gear and teams up with Facebook, Twitter etc. to make some apps for it.

Also, I'm with V8_Ninja, what exactly is the point in this thread? We already know that the 3DS has a web browser and it can access pretty much any site, as long as there isn't a lot of images, flash videos or youtube.

Apps would be great, but the point of this thread wasnt so much about the browser and more about the mobile optimised sites which work best on things like the 3DS.
In a world where apps have become the norm people have seemed to have forgoten about mobile web.

Hopefully Nintendo will get its @ss into gear and make these simple apps, but until they do we have to make the best of the situation.

I haven't forgotten about it. I just have better things to use the internet for than constantly clicking on Facebook and checking my friends messages and reading up that someone needs a bucket for their farm. >.>

The 3DS has a good little browser and can be used for a fair amount of things, but I think Nintendo just aren't using this to its fullest potential. For example, now we have Nintendo Video, Nintendo could easily let us download YouTube videos straight to Nintendo Video with a special section for our videos and watch them there, back out , boot up YouTube and download some more, a lot like the Internet Browser and 3DS camera. Okay, sure it's not the most convenient thing in the world, but at least it's a start...

also I'd like a Nintendo Life app, do it Nintendo Life, do it, do it, do it...

I totally agree, and I think Nintendo are really missing out on a great opportunity. I mean the system already lights up when you get a Notification and because of Spotpass as soon as you pass a free wifi-spot you recieve your spotpass data ready for when you next open your system... add this to the most popular Social Media sites like Twitter, Facebook, whatever and make a specific app for it (with Notifications) then it takes the device to the next level. Clearly we can use these sites through the browser so obviously they work on the 3DS all they have to do is put a 'tiny' bit of work into tweeking them and you will have a great app...

...even better if we get a Nintendo Life app

It would be rather simple if you think about it. As soon as you pass a Wi-Fi enabled area you can automatically download new posts, tweets, photo's etc. and give you a notification as to what you downloaded. Add in a Facebook app like the one you posted but with a few extra features and you're sorted.

With just a little effort and not that much brain power we've (well you) already thought up something for it to work effortlessly.

Maybe in time Nintendo will think about doing this. Personally I find social media a bore fest, but I still like checking in on Facebook now and again.

But I think a Nintendo Life app would be perfect, especially with the eShop window they've got. Reviews, news and forums at your finger tips? Yes please!

Have a smartphone, but there are still a few apps i would want. Also saying apps are better than websites is stupid. The main reason for app versions of websites are due to html5 adpotion not being where it should and flashing being aresource hog.

Would love readitlater or instapaperon 3ds.

I honestly have 0 desire to check Facebook or any website on my 3DS. I have a netbook, and it basically works for anything web related better than any other means out there. If I wanted something I could keep in my pocket to shove every Facebook comment I get down my throat wherever I go, I would buy a better phone. There is no way that the 3DS is going to replace either of these devices.

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.

Hardy83

Nintendo, unsurprisingly, took a big step backwards in system functionality with the DSi to 3DS jump.
Course then again, half the features weren't working when the 3DS was released, let alone Facebook picture uploading features.

Is it a big deal? No, would it be great if you could upload 3D/2D pics to Facebook and upload 3DS Video recordings to Youtube, possibly in 3D?
Yes, yes it would.

I don't know why people are talking about apps like they're worse than the mobile versions of sites. The main advantage of apps is that you can get to them easily without having to create bookmarks and fiddle around with tabs and that they can notify you when things change. If someone replies to one of my posts on facebook and I didn't use an "app" then I wouldn't know about it until I next go to facebook. With an app I know about it instantly.

More to the point there are OTHER ways you can have more integration with social media that you can't do with just a browser and a mobile site. If you have the facebook app on the iPhone you have the ability to access it from other apps. You can find friends on facebook who are using the same software. THAT'S facebook integration. It's ridiculious that I can't use my facebook or twitter contacts to find friends for my 3DS without any effort. The vast, vast majority of social focused online apps and sites do it, why doesn't the 3DS?
