Topic: So after playing Smash 3DS for a while my R button is broken

I got Smash on Friday(launch day) but Saturday the right trigger button stopped working. Sunday I tried it again and found that it started working but only for about 20 mins of playtime. So ever since Sunday I've had to use the shield with X and that's awkward for me. I got my current 3DS 2 yrs ago for my 13th birthday and I lost all the warranty info. So does anyone know how I can get the trigger fixed?

Do you know what the fee is?

I think this a fairly common issue across all DS systems. My DS Lite is like that, but all I do is put my lips over the shoulder button, and then blow really hard. This is really annoying, because it only fixes it for so long, but I barely ever use my DS Lite any more so it's not a huge issue. If it were my 3DS, on the other hand, I'd probably send it in for repairs, or maybe just crack it open and try cleaning the shoulder button myself. (But only if my warranty was already void/expired)

Dang, are you mashing the shield button? My circle pad fell apart but I wasn't even playing matches yet, I was exploring the menus. Either way, I've had the shoulder buttons to on my old DS, compressed air might help, at least for awhile, eventually it needs to be fixed or replaced.

Even with an expired warranty, Nintendo has outright refused to repair things for me if I've opened them up like that, I guess it's against the terms of service. I mean, not a problem if you manage to fix it yourself, but you could lose they option of ever sending it in to Nintendo for repairs then.

I use Y (or X if you prefer) for grabs. L for shields, no need for the R button... Works great. I don't think using a face button for shields is ideal.

For what it's worth, the L/R buttons were among the most common issues with the DS and GBA lines, but I have not heard of many issues with the 3DS buttons. I witnessed three DSes and at least four or five GBAs with broken shoulder buttons. Out of the handful of 3DSes I've used extensively none have had shoulder button problems. Small sign of progress, maybe?

Wait, are you kidding?!?! If you open it they won't even let you pay for repairs?! That sounds really stupid... I guess I got kind of lucky though, since one time I opened my 3DS up to clean some sand out (Which I had just sent it in for, and Nintendo hadn't cleaned it out) and then quite a few months later the system bricked, but I was still able to have them repair it, I just never brought up the fact that I had opened it. (And they never asked. If they don't ask, it's probably a good idea to just not mention it )

Ya. R buttons having problems on DS are pretty common. I had a DS Lite that was only a year old and the R button just stopped working for no reason. That's the only time I've ever had the shoulder button issue.

Try using compressed air. If that doesn't work, you'll have to call Nintendo. They might give you a deal if it's just the R button. I don't think I've ever seen them charge a full amount for such a small problem.

Those consoles are called "tampered", and are not accepted for repair even if you pay, since you're violating the terms of use
Their logic is" "if you managed to open the system, maybe the issue is related to you doing it, hence, we don't have to fix your issues" , this is basically a law on every videogame company...

Yeah, seems backwards. I've had a couple times where they gave free repairs to systems with expired warranties... But then issues like this. I sent a Wii in that had been soft modded (no piracy) and they repaired it just deleting my homebrew channel, then there was a time I sent a DS with a third party stylus in and they sent it back with a note that a non-Nintendo stylus voids the warranty (because I'm sure my stylus broke the shoulder button). There's always a chance they'll repair a system that has been "tampered with", but because of the ToS they can refuse service so it's usually best not to open the thing unless you really wouldn't ever send it in for anything.

Panasonic I think are the best when it comes to just being reasonable. They will sell you any part you want if you cannot fit it then they one of their authorised agents will regardless of anything else (Other than you paying). I have never needed to get them to do it.

Digital Content does change the risk though.

I don't mash the R button. Well.... I might get into smashing so much that I kinda zone out of how hard I'm pressing the buttons.

To be fair I don't recall ever needing to spend a fee to get it repaired, at least not for $80. O_o

My R is weird sometimes but I notice its because I'm pressing it horizontally on the right edge. Try pressing it vertically on the inside, and see if that works.
If its actually broken broken it won't do much, but if you say it occasionally works it might be like my case.

Ok after blowing on the trigger several times it works now(probably temporarily; but at least I'm not sucking against online opponents cuz I can now can use my shield properly). Thanks everyone for the advice and such!
