Ask this on a Nintendo site, you get fanboyish answers for why you should buy the 3DS. Ask this on a Sony site, you get fanboyish answers as to why you should get a PS3. Just look at the games available on each system and decide what you prefer. What's the point in asking other people what to invest your money in? Everyone has different preferences. u_u
I understand that, it's just nice to get other peoples opinions and knowledge, especially about certain games for the 3DS and features and such. I think I'm probably going to go with the 3DS especially since i heard a rumor that the Ni No Kuni port for the DS might actually happen in the US.

The PS3 has good games... but it annoys me with it's frequent updates and long download times. Also, once a download is complete, you have to install it.

Yeah this is the major problem with the PS3. Other than that it's a very solid system.

He'll get a fanboyish answer no matter where he goes. I just find it interesting that more Sony kids that prefer PS go to a Nintendo site before any Nintendo kid that prefers Wii U goes to a Sony site.
I like Nintendo the most, so I stick to the Nintendo forums. I understand there's other consoles, so it's not like I will just say 'get a 3DS' even if it's obvious it wouldn't interest them.
All we can do is say what makes it a good device, benefits, etc., but it's ultimately up to him. I won't prefer PS3 for gaming, because all I use it for is bluray and media, and I play video games 1000 times more before I watch a movie anyway, much less a bluray when I can get 1000s of movies on Netflix for less money than a bluray. BTW 3DS, Wii U, and PS3 have Netflix if that makes a difference.

True, but I think he meant "you'll only get one type of answer for the most part instead of a mix of different answers". He's just lucky we have a good-sized PS3 fanbase here to give him a more mixed opinion. If he asked on a place like GoNintendo or Nintendo Everything, he'd be sure to get answers like "gt 3DS cuz teh PS3 sux0rz" 99% of the time.
Wait for the Xbox420... The RUMOURS all point to it being the best out of everything according to the Microsoft fanheads
Well, I like Nintendo first and foremost. I admit that, but I'd still rather have Xbox than PS. I think Xbox 1080 will be more powerful soley based on it being released the latest out of the three.

When the console releases doesn't really matter, when they started developing it does since that dictates what sort of hardware is available. The two are almost identical spec-wise going by the latest rumors on the Xbox, I really wouldn't be surprised if the only difference in hardware was the PS4's GDDR5 RAM.
But anyway, back on topic. The PS3 does have a big library of games you can get for cheap but that only goes so far if you don't like most of the selection. It has a pretty wide variety in most genres though. The PS3 can play any PS1 games you might have bought for your PSP without having to deal with your hands cramping, so it works pretty well with it.
The 3DS has a pretty good selection of games at the moment and will obviously have plenty coming in the future. If the PSP cramped your hands the 3DS might cause you problems as well so you might want to get an XL model, and if you do get an XL Nintendo often has free game promotions for it. They're digital copies but why not if your getting one anyway.
One little thing I want to add in regards to Etrian Odyssey, if you liked Class of Heros it plays similar to that.
Just ask yoursef this:
How much do you like raging kids and shooter game genre?
I thought this was 3DS vs. PS3 not 3DS vs. Xbox 360. just kidding, I have an 360 and enjoy it
Anyways, I don't own one myself, but you'd probably be better off getting a PS3. It has a lot of games released for it since it's been around longer, it's pretty cheap nowadays, plus it's got PS1 games which right now as a whole is better than what the 3DS VC has to offer.
@SheldonRandoms: He might not be able to afford both of them.

Probably because Sony fanboys tend to be a bit more antagonistic towards Nintendo fanboys then vice versa. But that's just a generalization.
