I agree with this. Especially with all the great games coming out on both systems this year, it's a tough choice, but by knowing your tastes and doing a lot of research (I recommend looking through Metacritcs, reading the synopsi, writing down what ones sound the most interesting to you, then looking around the web for videos and prices), you'll be sure to find what's best for you.

PS3, mostly because of the sheer amount of quality games you can get for insanely cheap prices.

ok so first wow, lots of responces. and thanks for them. as to the PS4 i really dont like it, i Love Sony and Nintendo both about equally. the biggest reason for PS3 is games i cant currently play on my PC either because they arent available or stupid companies threw DRM like Securom on them. the biggest reason for 3DS is yeah it is portable and it has hopefully many years ahead of it like the DS did, and it has alot more RPGs that i like and other games, MGS 3D, monster hunter cave story zelda, mario kart, resident evil, blah blah... heh. and i really like the 3D effect it seems to really work when i use it. it just has a very small range though. I think i'm starting to sound like i want the 3DS too. oh and castlevania and DS support is awesome. and now that both have been out for quite some time (mostly PS3) they have great games. does anybody know of some great RPGs for the 3DS? my kind of RPG is Not Final Fantasy, i really like 4 and that's about it sorry. The linear gameplay, and certain takes on the turn based battle system kill me. are there any RPGs like Dragon Quest IX and Xenoblade Chronicles. those two games are stinking amazing! oh and i have a PSP and my hands get cramped i havent played with a 3DS XL how much bigger is it?

No FF games on the 3DS so far. Do you like Kingdom Hearts? Dream Drop Distance was released as a 3DS exclusive. Etrian Odyssey IV is an amazing first-person, turn-based dungeon crawling RPG with plenty of challenge and a huge cartography element (the touch-screen is used for mapping out dungeons). Devil Survivor: Overclocked, if you never played the original, is a fantastic mix of RPG and strategy gameplay. Tales of the Abyss was released last year, which is one of the more popular games in the Tales series of RPGs. Fire Emblem: Awakening is an incredible, expansive, and utterly gorgeous SRPG. And two new Shin Megami Tensei games are coming out soon for the 3DS: Soul Hackers, which is a port of a Sega Saturn SMT spin-off game that never made it to the US, and Shin Megami Tensei IV, which is a full-on continuation of the main SMT series.

So... lots of choices. Fire Emblem seems to be one of the highest rated games on the 3DS so far, so you might start with that. If you're interested in Etrian Odyssey IV, there is actually an expansive demo of it in the eshop. You should definitely try that before buying it. There's also a brief demo for Fire Emblem: Awakening, but it gives you some sense of the gameplay and shows off some of the beautiful cutscenes.

The XL is fairly big. Bigger than the PSP, for sure. If you had problems with the PSP, definitely don't go for the original model o the 3DS, though, which is comparatively tiny compared to the 3DS XL.

No i don't like Kingdom Hearts never have. i cant get into them. And i have heard of Fire Emblem Awakening from what i heard it sounds like everyone is crying out like its the god of portable rpgs heh, like DQ 9 was. I thought about Etrian odyssey the other day. I saw alot of people like it. i was searching for some good PSP rpgs. first person dungeon crawling turn based rpgs huh, that sounds ridiculous. ive also heard alot about Shin Megami Tensei, and Persona are they the same thing or what..? and i do like strategy games too so i might like Fire Emblem: Awakening, are the GBA ones any good compared to it?

There are a couple of GBA Fire Emblem, but I can't personally recommend them, as Awakening is the first I've played. They're Fire Emblem, and Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. (Awakening added a lot of new things though, and has more content)

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

Well if you like Metroidvania, some RPGs, 3D, etc other things you've mentioned, 3DS would be the choice to go with. There is already Castlevania and Fire Emblem.
I've seen videos of the handhelds comparing size, and 3DS is about the same height and length, but has a shorter width about as Vita. You should look up a video comparing Vita and 3DS.
I recommend the XL though. It has about 2 times better battery than the regular and has 90% bigger screens.

As for RPGs, I see no one has mentioned any of the quality releases on eShop.

The Denpa Men: They Came by Wave - Good 30-50 hour adventure, with quite a bit of extra things to do. It's a bit quirky in it's style, but it's fun, & I've heard people compare it's battle system to DQ. (NL 9/10)

Crimson Shroud - It's not a terribly long game, but it goes for an old table top RPG look, which is really unique. It also has a more difficult "new game +" that's more difficult, and has a secret ending. (NL 9/10)

Picdun 2: the Witch's Curse - It's a simpler version of the dungeon crawling RPG (like Etrian Odyssey), which makes it better for newcomers to that particular genre. It has 60 floors to tackle, with the puzzles getting pretty tricky later on (NL 7/10)

The Sword of Hope II - This is a VC GB release. It's a bit old fashioned, but it's a nice treat for RPG fans, and will last you 15-20 hours, which is great for a GB game. (NL 8/10)

Legend of the River King - This is a GBC VC game. It's a very unique RPG, in which your main goal is to fish. As you play, you do favors for people, and buy better equipment that lets you venture further, & catch bigger fish. As in most any RPG, there is the occasional random battle (with wildlife, such as snakes & bears), with a unique twist on the turn based battle system. (NL 8/10)

Picdun 2, is it first person or isometric view, or 3rd person?

It's First Person, just like Etrian Odyssey. Battles are random, just like EO as well, but they're not turn based. You press the face buttons to attack, and the d-pad to defend (your attack strength charges if you wait to attack).

Overall, the battling is usually very easy, and takes a back seat to the puzzle elements of the game.

I don't like Kingdom Hearts either, but a lot of people do.

Give the Etrian Odyssey demo a try. Worst thing that happens is that you don't like it and save yourself $40. The battling in the Shin Megami Tensei games is all first-person and turn-based as well.

Persona is a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei. Persona games, to my knowledge, are Sony exclusives, although there was a rumor of a 3DS Persona game, but I think that must have been cancelled or something. Important to note is that the PS3 doesn't have any Persona games on it.

Never played a Fire Emblem game on the GBA as I never owned a GBA in its lifetime (I jumped from Game Boy Color to Nintendo DS Lite, skipping that handheld generation entirely!), but they're all very highly-rated RPGs.

I can vouch for Crimson Shroud as well. It is one of the best downloadable RPGs on the system thus far.

Only thing is, he's trying to make a decision between a 3DS and a PS3, not a Vita.

Yes, but it would be hard to decide between a handheld or a console, when they are nothing alike. Thats why I brought up Wii U a few pages back to compare to PS3. The handhelds are no doubt better than GCN, PS2, Xbox gen now adays, but deciding between a console and handheld is near impossible when the are completely different.

I like the Vita but it's expensive and Sony isn't doing much to save it, not that it's dying. there arent many games out for it that id get other than the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and Retro City Rampage. maybe Muramasa. I think I'm leaning more towards the 3DS XL than anything else, my sister has been wanting one for awhile and when she saw it had Netflix she is getting one, I'd probably play Fire Emblem with her and Mario Kart 7

My brother said he wouldn't get a DSi, but then Flipnote Hatena came out, and Flipnote 3D will be out this summer for animations.
I think you'll like the 3DS. It has way more big retail titles now, and lots of $2 or $5-10 games that could last you just as long if you're interested enough.
Make sure to get the blue with Mario Kart or the Fire Emblem deal if you get one. I bought a blue 3DS XL day one. It comes with a 4GB sd card, too.
I hope you get a 3DS, but I won't be pissed if you get a PS3.

Its hard to tell but if you have a capable PC, why bother with a PS3 ? sure the exclusives are really really good (Uncharted 1-3 are damn good, i love inFamous and God of War) but im not sure if its going to be worth it NOW, since it will surely go down even further when the PS4 release (or its close to it)...

Anyway... not taking ANYTHING of the above into the equation, In my opinion the PS3 its the better choice, not because ts better, but because theres a lt of great and cheap games now, but its weird to buy one now since the PS4 its coming out and with that in my the the 3DS seems a WAY better decision... form an economic point of view
