Not surprising to me- this is the same guy who was happy that Nintendo decided to take their new handheld into stereoscopic 3D.
"I don’t personally believe that they dropped the price of the 3DS to respond to our pricing. We didn’t price PS Vita to their price, either. We had that plan since the last couple years. My personal guesstimate is that they have their business plan and goals to sell a certain amount of 3DS units, and they realized post-launch was that the pricing was not helping them to achieve the goal that they set."
Finishing with this:
“I like to see healthy competition between Nintendo’s system and ours because it helps innovation. It’s always a good thing to have.”
Sony needs Nintendo! Because Nintendo makes Sony look good everything they mess up. So good job Nintendo!

Now this is the kind of people need representing their companies because all that the mud flingers do (like Jack) is make them look bad, make fans of the opposition defensive and thats when the FanWars start.
I hope the Vita does alright too, Im not interested in it but I can atleast see its good points and have actually sugested it to some friends over the 3DS because to be honest it suited them better. Although as a matter of preference I like the 3DS and do recommend it.

A bit of competition isn't all that bad, but when people start flinging crap around - I'm looking at you Jack Tretton - then console wars and disagreements arise. I'd like the Vita to succeed, sure. It's got a lot going for it but I prefer the 3DS for my gaming needs and I just love the little thing. :3
Sony are an alright company, but some people - even people within Sony - can make them look like absolute stuck ups. This man deserves respect!
I've always liked Kazuo Hirai. He seems like a genuine guy. Phil Harrison always seemed too stuck up and pompous (he's not at Sony anymore), and Jack Tretton is just a jack@$$ jerk.

Today we have a different ball game. Both Sony and Nintendo know it.
They know that the traditional handheld market is not as it was back in the days. Today, both companies are having to deal with the reality that mainstream gamers are presently gravitating towards iPhone/iPads and other mobile devices that are NOT dedicated gaming machines.
And without mainstream gamers, traditional handhelds will have a tougher time making it big.
So obviously, Sony understands that its pointless to fight Nintendo. When they actually need said company to thrive and stay around. This to help the whole handheld market survive under the present situation where Apple and other companies are taking away the majority of mainstream/casual costumers (even some of the core ones too, based on a report that came out today).
Obviously, to a typical fanboy... such actions by Sony seem weird and out of place. Also consider that Nintendo rarely attacks its competition. And generally tries to take the high road whenever Sony or MS says something insulting. Avoiding taking a cheap shot at them.
So Nintendo understands that Sony and MS need each other to help the traditional gaming market remain relevant.
