Do you want to take your gaming with you on the go (3DS), or do you play mostly at home (Wii U)?
Do you prefer to play on a large screen (Wii U) or hold the whole console in your hands (3DS)?
Are there any particular games from either console you really want to play now? (choose the console that has the games already released and wait for the other)
Are there any particular features from either console you really want? e.g. stereoscopic 3D (3DS), camera (3DS), motion control games (Wii U), Miiverse (Wii U)
I'd maybe suggest going for the Wii U now while it's brand new, but it really comes down to the games you want and how you want to play.
3DS WiiU is just coming out and while it's good it lacks anything wowing ATm

I've always gotten more out of home consoles than portable gaming consoles. So I'd choose Wii U. But if you decide on 3DSXL, you might want to wait a month and see if this price drop rumor comes true.
Yep I also say get 3DS after price drop or bundled with Mario Kart 7 (wich is a truly amazing game). The Wii U is brand new and still has lots of software to come out thats really worthwhile - of course that depends on your taste - but the 3DS has its own awesome library + eShop + DS compatibility. 3DS XL is a safe bet in my book!

If you can get both, get both.
If you mostly play at home, get a Wii U.
If you mostly play on the go, get a 3DS XL.
If you play at home, but want to play on the bed,in the kitchen while waiting for the food (lol),in the bathroom while- you know..,get a Wii U.
The Wii U Gamepad has amazing range, from 30ft to 60ft!!! That means... MORE THAN 10 METERS! That means you might be able to play it outside.
Or put the console in a van and power it with some cables, and play in the park on the Wii U gamepad, without a TV.
Get a 3DS XL and then you can get super mario 3d land or professor layton for free
He lives in Canada not Europe but that would be good

I'd say go with the 3DS XL. The Wii U is going to take a while to get some noteworthy games, where the 3DS already has several. It's also going to be extremely hard to find a Wii U until a few months after Christmas, so if you want something right away you should go for the XL. Besides, Luigi's Mansion, Castlevania, Etrian Odyssey 4, and Animal Crossing are all coming out early next year.
No matter what the game is, try your best to find enjoyment in it for whatever reason. Sometimes a bad game just needs a bit of a shot to the arm with the imagination of a goofball :).

What noteworthy games? Sure there's the mario games, but all have been let downs. The only game worth getting is OOT 3d and that is a remake of an older game..

Seriously? Uprising, Spyro's Adventure, Professor Layton, and on the contrary I disagree the Mario games were ALL letdowns and I regularly play Mario Kart 7, and I enjoyed going through the other two when I did as well. Paper Mario has been out in NTSC regions for a while and I hear is fantastic. That's not even mentioning a great array of eShop content(Mutant Mudds, Pullblox, Mighty Switch Force and more). And yes, there will be a fantastic batch adding on early next year, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion... I'm not saying that I don't think the Wii U is going to end up better in the future and in the contrary it looks to me like one day it'll become my clear cut favorite but at the moment if you must pick... There isn't really much contest. The Wii U is a fantastic console, but... It's sort of expensive and the launch lineup just can't contest with what is out now ready to be experienced on the 3DS. I do recommend Wii U over 3DS in terms of CONSOLE alone but until the Wii U gets its serious exclusives going the 3DS is the superior choice to buy for its games. @OMFGNINTENDO Buy a 3DS XL after the price drop then a Wii U when you can afford it(by which time that will probably get its first cost lowering anyway).
P.S. OP is asking which they should buy FIRST, so they probably plan to get both.
