So, there are two parts to this question: (1) Should I get Fire Emblem Awakening? and (2) If I do get it, should I get it via Download?
Firstly, I have not played any Fire Emblem games before. I do know that Fire Emblem is a tactical RPG. In the past, I have played tactical RPGs (specifically the ones from the Gundam G Generation series) and find them rather interesting. I looked at a few video reviews of Fire Emblem, and they look fun. My main reservation is that since I have not played a game from the series before, I don't know whether I'll like it.
This leads to the second question. This week (up until this Thursday), there is a sale on Fire Emblem Awakening where I can get Fire Emblem by downloading it from the Nintendo E-Shop for $30. (By comparison, a hard copy of the game from Amazon costs around $40.) Price savings aside, I like the ease of being able to access the game from my 3DS XL without having to switching in and out game cartridges. However, in the event I get the game and do not like it, it would be close to impossible for me to resell the game if I download it from the e-Shop.
Yeah if you not sure you are probably better off getting a hard copy cause that way you can at least trade it in somewhere and get a little something back for it if you dont like it. If you buy it from the eShop there is no way you can get anything back for the purchase even if you dont like it.

Fire Emblem Awakening was my first Fire Emblem game. I purchased the retail version and clocked in over 70 hours so far and I go back to it every now and then. It's by far my favourite 3DS game and I've played all the big guns like OOT, Pokemon Y, SM3DL, etc. What I'm trying to say is: go for it! Digital will save you from the hassle to put the cartridge back in, every time you want to play FE:A.
Chances are that you'll love the game. Read some of the many rave reviews. If you value the convenience and true portability of having digital games on your 3DS' SD card, go digital! Especially at that low price!
Given that you've already said you find the genre interesting, I think the chances of you disliking it are almost non-existent. It's the most likable and accessible strategy RPG I've ever played.
As for the format. I prefer hard copies. If you prefer digital, just go with that. The only reason not to is if you might wanna sell it further down the line. The game has kept its value very well so you can sell it on ebay at very little loss.
I went out and bought the FE 3DSXL with Awakenings pre-installed on release. I took a big risk and over 100hrs later it paid off and I even got a bunch of DLC for it also. However I often go for physical for console games i'm unsure about for a few reasons:
1. If I don't like it I can return it via Amazon's return service and get a full refund within 28 days minus delivery charge.
2. I hate having digital copies of worthless games, it reminds me what a mistake I made each time I go to my download list .
3. Physical is in most cases cheaper.
4. If the game has little to no replay value there is no need to own it once its complete so I can trade it in or sell it via Amazon.
I'd say go physical if you're unsure, you'll make that $10 D/L saving back if you ever decide to sell the cart in the future anyway. If you love the game so much you never want to sell it then the extra $10 you spent won't matter anyway.
Some follow-up questions:
1. If I want to get some DLC for the game, would whether I have a hard copy or a digital copy make any difference?
2. How much replay value does Fire Emblem Awakening have? That is, once you beat the game, are you likely to go back and replay some or all of it?

1. Nope
2. It depends. It's very easy to replay with different characters as the ones you normally use on a different difficulty. But it's hard to go back to after playing the other, more complex games in the series.
