Without a 3DS youll be missing out on a ton of exclusive games, and that includes e-shop games. Plus with the VC you are potentially getting more than one console in one system. GB, GBC, Game Gear, NES.

the 3DS, more than any other console in Nintendo's history, is getting by purely on the Nintendo content. Every third party experience is being done better on the other consoles.
I might be able to see that with Super Street Fighter IV, MGS3D, Samurai Warriors, Ridge Racer, and Monkey Ball but those are the only five third party games I think fits your generalization (and to be fair, the latter 3 aren't exactly known for improving upon themselves with each new release, regardless of system). Look at Resident Evil: Revelations, it's 3DS exclusive (so can't be experienced on other consoles), and is regarded by many (especially series fans), to be better than RE5 (a console entry, in which many were dissapointed). Tales of the Abyss also comes to mind. While it is true that it is a port, the PS2 original had a very limited release (and it wasn't even released in Europe), so it most certainly is not easier to go find it for PS2. 3DS is currently the best option for anyone wanting the game (one review, NintendoWorldReport I believe, even stated that they enjoyed the 3DS controls better than the PS2). Dead or Alive Dimensions isn't a port either (why some people believe it is, is beyond me), and it's currently the best fighter on 3DS. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy is another worthwhile 3rd party title on 3DS (despite the name, it has nothing to do with the most recent console release). It is a fantastic title, and many fans praised it for taking place in the traditional world of Ace Combat, instead of taking place in the real world (the newest console game made that move, and the fans, myself included, weren't happy about the change), so for my money, the 3DS AC game is a much better buy than the most recent console game. There are also numerous great 3rd party titles on eShop (Mighty Switch Force, VVVVVV, Mutant Mudds, and Colors! 3D come to mind first. To say there are no 3rd party games on 3DS are as good as their counterparts on other systems is a falsity, plain and simple.
