Topic: Should I Buy a DS(i) or 3DS?

If you want to save money on a system to get more games then go for a DS but if you want the best DS experience I recommend the DSi XL. If you want to prepare for the future then get a 3DS because even though there are no games now the past experience with the DS will show you that over time there will be a slew of awesome games. Also the circle pad is said to improve control for some DS games that use the d-pad in a 3d environment.

You may want to pick up a DS lite if you are worried that your GBA is going to die.

The 3DS would most likely be the best way forward and with the large and expansive DS library, including the, still to arrive, 3DS library, you have one massive library of epic games on your hands. However, the 3DS is brand new and has only just hit the market and to be honest, it didn't make much of an entrance, so it wouldn't hurt to get a DS Lite so you can still play your GBA games, plus have the DS library on hand too and maybe wait a month or so for the 3DS to really get rolling, you won't be missing out on much.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Nintendo state that GBA games would be released on the 3DS? Now, admittedly, not all of them may come on to the 3DS, so that isn't really the safest bet. But, getting a 3DS and a GBA Micro/SP (when your one might die) might be the best option, you have a nifty GBA in your top pocket and a beast in your leg pocket, where could you possibly go wrong?

Also look at it this way:
Oh fudge, 3DS ran out of powah!
whips out GBA Micro/SP

With the cheapness of a GBA Micro/SP, your not really setting yourself back too much, and if you wanted you could wait a little while for the games you want to be released and buy the 3DS then

3DS because its a DSi and more

YES get the 3DS it has everything the DSi has but more, superb graphics, Awesome game play with analog controls and gyroscope and also the AR games which are awesome. All new consoles that just came out will be lacking of games, but soon there will be many. Also, the 3DS has updates so there will be more to come. Can you watch netflix on a DSi?

MarioKart7 Is on it's way =D Should be here any day now.

I had a DS Lite and for awhile I wasn't thinking I would upgrade to the 3DS. But after I got one for my birthday I am SO glad I did. Most (okay all) of the things I'm looking forward to for it haven't even come out yet but I love my little system. I don't think it feels low quality at all. I take care of it so it doesn't have any scratches or anything. And the battery life has not bothered me once. I turn off the wireless when I'm not using it and turn down the brightness when I'm playing in the dark and it's perfect. It has never run out of battery while I was playing.

I'm not going to lie, the 3DS right now isn't what it was hyped up to be. But if Nintendo pulls off it's legendary magic, it'll be worth it over the summer. I think you should watch E3 and see what the 3DS has to offer. Just hope it doesn't get too awesome and sells out lol

  • The DS is region-free. The 3DS is not, unfortunately. Could anyone please explain me the use of region locking.

Its to stop piracy.

Personally I would go with a 3DS if you have the money if not just save up for one right now you arent missing anything. If you need a DS system to play DS games on I would go with the DSlight especially if you are like me and have GBA games. Yeah the 3DS VC might have GBA games but who knows what games will be available and if they will be. Also DSlite can be picked up for less than a hundred for a used one. However if you are looking for DSiware than yeah a DSi is the way to go if you cant afford a 3DS or want to wait to get one but of course a DSi is only a hundred dollars off from a 3DS so imo I would just wait till I get the hundred dollar difference.

Gameboy Micro is still pricey, about as much as the 3DS as I remember, LOL I might get a micro sometime because I've always wanted an GBA plus the Micro is hot.

The 3DS is the best option.

1)it plays all DS games, so you'll be able to build a good library to hold you over until the big guns come out.
2) the shop is coming next week, so you'll have all the DSiWare games you want.
3) the eshop has a VC too. Unless you have some licensed or obscure GBA favorites, it's only a matter of time before the big games show up. (I know GBA isn't confirmed for VC, but is there really anyway it won't happen?)
4) you're not going to see great new DS titles anymore, really. The new stuff is going to be on the 3DS.

If you can't afford a 3DS now, I'd pick up a lite. It can play your GBA collection and is cheaper.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

Pricey? Have you been to eBay lately? You can get one for $40 if you're lucky.

A 3DS is the better investment in the long run. Eventually you'll be done with DS games and want to move on, and in the meantime the 3DS library just keeps growing and growing.

  • Let's face it: currently the 3DS hasn't got jack to offer. It currently has no game that piques my interest, and the only interesting games arriving in the near future are the Mega Man Legends 3 demo (merely a demo, obviously) and Ocarina Of Time 3D (a remake of a, what? 14 year old game?). And all the interesting looking games haven't received a solid release date or simply lack concrete information.

That depends on who you ask and what they bought. If someone gets a 3DS at launch and buys a bad game, they'll assume that the rest of them aren't much better. A lot of the launch titles are crap, but some of them are really fantastic. The inverted review scores don't help, either.

I would suggest finding somewhere that lets you try a game before you buy it, because that's really the only way to be certain. If you really can't find any that are interesting to you, then maybe a DS would be better. You might also want to try playing DS games on a 3DS. It hasn't bothered me, but I usually play 3DS games, anyway.

i love my 3ds a lot. i carry it around everyday. EVERY days.
it grows on you. much more than any handheld i owned.
it plays all my DS games without fail, it tracks stats about your gaming and daylife.

but, if your budget is tight and you're patient, i would wait until the famous 6 June patch comes by, and after the E3.
the 3DS will wake up from its launch lazyness and show the world much more features of potential than what it is right now.
if things come out great, we will have a much better internet experience than the DSi, video player,ebook/text files reader?
virtual console, eshop are also fantastic.

so i highly suggest to be patient and wait a week or 2 so you will have a more updated view of the product.
if you dont care about these features, then get yoruself the DSi, or the larger version. the DS library is huge, you got plenty of meat to bite for years. a lot to try before the real 3Ds titles come out, because lets not hide it, the 3Ds titles are all crap. None of them if worth justifying to buy the 3DS. some are fun, some are Wow, but none are worth their full amount of cash. maybe street fighter 4, but it got old fast on me, im not a fighter fan.
nintendogs perhaps...but...meh

oh yeah, the camera is fun, but dont expect a revolution. it would be a revolution with a much higher megapixel power. now, they look like crap if you export them out of your 3ds.

true. if you have the chance to have a store that let you try games, which is rare by the way, jump on the occasion !
i do here, and i could see that every games werent really good and seemed rushed for the launch
i had fun with samurai warrior, much more than what the review here said.

Just to warn you before you buy one: The gameboy micro can't play GB or GBC games. just GBA cartridges.

Cringing is really fun.

I was kind of in the same situation, and I went with the 3DS. It just seems like the better option, since you'll have access to so much more content/games. 8-)
