Topic: Decided - Should I buy a 3DS?

Hey there.
I am debating whether or not to purchase a 3DS after playing on one and enjoying it a lot. I wasn't too keen on any of the games for it, except Pilotwings, but I have heard a lot of people saying it isn't that great since it is too short and has no truly free flight mode. I have previously owned both a DS Lite and a DSi, but sold my DS Lite and have not really been playing my DSi much as I have not had the time. The summer holidays are approaching, and I am certain I will be playing my 3DS like mad if I choose to buy one. However, it is quite expensive and I do not know whether it is worth waiting for the price to drop further. I will be transferring all of my DSiWare over and then selling my DSi on eBay (I expect to get around £60+, it will come with a case and original box, instructions etc. Is that a reasonable price?) so I hope to only pay around £120 in the end. The reason I don't want to wait is because of the Excitebike offer which is really tempting me to buy a 3DS. From what I have seen, it looks right up my street and as if I would really enjoy it. As well as that, I really want to be able to play the new games that will be coming out (Super Mario & Mario Kart are must-buys for me) as they won't be playable on my DSi.
I've probably explained my dilemma really badly, so here is a quick list of the pros and cons:
Pros:
I want to buy Super Mario & Mario Kart as soon as they come out (or get them for Christmas).
I want to be 'up to date'. For example, the next Pokémon game will probably be 3DS exclusive, along with many others and I want to be able to play them.
I want to take advantage of the free Excitebike offer!
Cons:
Expensive (though I can afford it comfortably).
Price may decrease more.
No games out at the moment that I would buy, but I would play my DSiWare and old DS games.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

One Word - Yes

The 3DS is now not very expensive, the DSi was £180 at launch, now you can get the 3DS for around £170 (I'll post the best price i can find soon!)

The price won't decrease until December, i would not wait that long

The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time 3D is out. The best game ever re-made in glorious 3D. It appeals to pretty much everyone, that is why it was rated best game ever.

Finally, it is amazing!

Thanks for your response, I would attempt a trade in but all of the trade in prices I have seen are awful (eg. Trading in a DSi at GAME would give me £50, and I'm sure I could get more than that).

Thank you for your advice 3DSneedsRPGs, I'd be grateful if you could post a cheap price (the cheapest I've found is on Amazon).

If you're worried about the price, maybe you can find a second hand for a cheaper price, just check for defects. By now, there are people who will sell their 3DS' at a cheaper price. I bought one $65 less the original amount with no defects.

@dhammerton - Do you have any games with your DSi? If so I expect you could sell your DSi for about £65 on eBay, (current cheapest price is £60 with one game) if it would sell. Also, the cheapest price depends on what colour you would like.

Cosmos Black Cheapest Price at www.gamesbasement.co.uk £157.99
Aqua Blue Cheapest Price at www.amazon.co.uk £179.95

I feel so annoyed now. My Aqua Bue 3DS was £187 at launch day from Amazon! As we're on the subject, the 3DS is 3 months old today in the UK! Happy Birthday

@Karakato_001 Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look on eBay.
@3DSneedsRPGs I do have quite a lot, and I'll have a look and see if there are any I'd sell. I prefer the blue 3DS over the black, because I've never had a blue before and I ALWAYS buy black ones. :/ £65 sound good, I wouldn't hesitate about the price if I could sell my DSi for that.

Thanks for your help guys!

I don't think that you should purchase a 3DS right now. Granted, the 3DS is a great investment but there just aren't any good games for it at the moment with the exception of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I'm very sorry I upgraded to the 3DS and invested most of my money into my iPod Touch as I would much rather have saved my money for the upcoming PlayStation Vita. Now, I'm having to save money all over again.

It would be better to save your money now and then wait until November and compare the Vita vs the 3DS. The 3DS will have a far better software library in February of next year. Next year we'll have Animal Crossing 3D, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Luigi's Mansion 2 and Mario Kart 3DS and that is when the 3DS will prove unstoppable. At the present time you would be far safer by saving your money. Money in hand is always better than money spent. The PlayStation Vita will be a powerful investment from day one as it is launching with blockbuster titles such as Hot Shots Golf Next, Gravity Daze, LittleBigPlanet, PS Ruin and the incredible ModNation Racers. Plus, the PSVita will be far better for watching feature length movies like National Treasure and The Final Inquiry while the 3DS screen is so small and wouldn't be suitable for watching movies and news reports. The PSVita is a more mature and robust device unlike the jovial 3DS.

Well that's how I feel on the matter. I hope I proved helpful.

i have my 3ds all day long in my pocket or near me.
i dont mind the battery low power. i just got a nyko powerpak+, and you can see a good difference.

its all a matter if you like nintendo's universe or if you prefer sony's mind. i like the user-friendly and clean look of nintendo's products.
and i like nintendo's characters.

Yes, I like the Nintendo Universe and characters. However when it comes to getting more bang for your buck then the PlayStation Vita is the way to go. Our family already has a Wii and so I'm quite happy there. My 3DS is collecting dust because there are not any good high quality games that I desire to play right now. Furthermore the 3DS doesn't have the high end specs that the PSVita has.

The PlayStation Vita is a serious device while the 3DS falls between the iPad, Wii and can't even dream of getting close to the power of the Vita. The Vita has graphics that are par with those of the PS3, man it can even do cross-gaming with the PS3. It's all about getting more bang for your buck. Seriously I enjoy my 3DS but I just don't think it's worth the price. Perhaps next year will be better for the Nintendo 3DS.

Another good reason for owning the 3DS is Kid Icarus Uprising and Sonic Generations. From what I've read Kid Icarus Uprising and Sonic Generations are going to be good both graphically and in the way of game play.

I just got mine yesterday and i have to admit that the 3d effect is not as good as i thought it would. However, the console itself is superior to the dsi in the categories of: asthetics, graphics and software.
I purchased my 3ds for £135 at Game (I traded in a few games). BTW the battery life is annoying!

It seems the only really time-critical thing you want it for is the Excite-bike offer, but at some point that will be offset by the 3DS dropping in price (i.e. if Excitebike is worth $5, then waiting until the 3DS drops in price by $5 means you're not losing anything).

Personally, there's not a lot on the system at the moment that really sells it to me. I'm waiting until more games are confirmed/released, and then I'll make a decision - I've got months worth of unplayed games to work through at the moment.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

Yes, you should buy the 3DS, but you need to wait for the best games coming up. OOT 3D is already here, but Mercenaries (Or something like that) should be a good game too. Tip: Save up your money for Fall/Winter.

The other time factors depend on the games you want to pay because although DOA is having a second run at the daily DLC that had been released (it started again on Friday) they havnt mentioned about rereleasing it again and it isnt as if it is already on the cart and just unlocked, it is new physical downloads that need to be stored on the SD card. Another game that has been offering weekly DLC from pretty early on is Tecmo's other game on the system and that is Samurai Warriors and its downloads feature completely new levels to play and again they havnt mentioned wether they will repeate the DLC as this run lasts about five - six months worth of content.
So if either of those games float your boat you may want to get as much of the content as possible.

I'm in your position right now too, except I know I'm going to get a 3DS. I'm just waiting til the holiday season. That's when two key things will happen: A) a lot of great games are coming out, and B) stores will be having great deals to get you to buy a 3DS and 3DS games from them. ExciteBike is cool, but not really worth forcing you to buy it now when you can wait.

Ocarina of Time 3D + the eShop = lots of time out of the charging cradle for my 3DS. If Zelda doesn't interest you at all, it's tough to recommend a 3DS right now, but it's more than justified the purchase price for me. :3
