So, I've been wanting to play a few games. Mostly Zelda, Pokémon, and Smash Bros. I already own the og 3DSxl and I was wondering if the new 3DS will be worth it. Cos the last thing I want is there to be a new handheld out as soon as I get this one. I'm thinkin Christmas, but idk. Ideas?

If you want to play Xenoblade 3D then yes, otherwise I personally am waiting, and suggest waiting to upgrade for more exclusive N3DS games. Built in Amiibo support is nice and all but the regular 3DS NFC reader is $20. I only suggest getting the new one if you don't have a 3DS at all. Otherwise wait...
If you end up getting it anyway, they likely won't be moving on from the 3DS for easily a few more years.

In my opinion, yes, its well worth the money.

besides having the ability to play Xenoblade, the user experience its just miles better, its much faster, a lot smoother, the new 3D its glorious, etc... its just a much better all around experience

that does depends if you are willing to pay the difference, if you sell the 3DS (after transfering everything) would help quite a bit

Xenoblade 3D and Monster Hunter 4U (even though that one isn't N3DS exclusive) is probably the only reason to get one at the moment. Both games last a long time so...I dunno really. But I found the Circle Pad Pro somewhat uncomfortable, so...yeah.

Forgot to mention that Majora's Mask 3D also uses the second nub/circle pad thingy.

You're going to be waiting a long time then. It seems no-one remembered what happened with the DSi

Facial tracking for 3D is the major selling point of the N3DS. Xenoblade, better compatability with Smash, and 3D features enabled on Hyrule Warriors is another. If you're not getting the XL, the N3DS has nifty customizable face plates which have triggered an obnoxious amount of discussions on the 3DS subreddit. The improved processor speed helps play GBA games (assuming your O3DS is >9.2) and soon hopefully we'll get access to the CPU unlocker for >9.2 systems so Pokemon X/Y/ORAS can be played without horrendous lagging without needing a kernal exploit.

Honestly, I love my New 3DS. I've already got a normal 3DS and an old XL. The thing for me is that playing 3DS games in 3D was always bothering to me as you had to hold the system in a certain position and that didn't necessarily reflect my preferences. But with the New 3DS, you don't have to do all that - you can move it and still see it in 3D without annoying shifts. Plus, that small C Pad really does help you move the camera in some games, like Monster Hunter or Xenoblade 3D (oh, and Majora's Mask 3D) .

However, if you don't care for the 3D feature like at all or never had a problem with that, I wouldn't go for it. I only have mine because I'm a Nintendo fan-iac who buys everything they create. Honestly, though, the final decision is up to you.

All of the new Monster Hunter games (4U and Cross) load, look, and play better on the new 3DS. If you plan on playing and beating even one of them I'd say it's worth it, as those are at least 200 hour games. It really helps to have the extra shoulder buttons to set to adjust the camera.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

If it was a choice of one or the other I'd go with the New 3DS. For example if your old one broke or if you were buying your first 3DS. Because it is better hardware. But as an upgrade? I would only suggest getting it if you really want Xenoblade and have no other way of playing it. Because so far that's the only compelling reason to own it. It's a good rule of thumb for any for any gaming platform, you buy new hardware so you can play new software.

And I know people will whine about me saying this but it's also worth remembering we don't know what the NX is yet. We could easily end up getting a new portable in the next year or so. Even if the NX is not a portable I don't think the (New) 3DS will be Nintendo's portable for too much longer. So just sit and wait, something might change. It's not like you're missing out on much!

I love my (smaller) New 3DS and lots of people here will tell you the same, but the truth is I don't think it's worth buying the New 3DS (XL) at this point if you (or your parents) have to pay its full price. If you can make an exchange paying a small amount of money like I did, then it's a better deal. I can see next Nintendo (hybrid) console coming soon and you might regret paying full price for a New 3DS now. In between, I think the smaller New 3DS is better than the bigger because the screens are crisper (higher pixel density) and the screens are big enough (bigger than original 3DS screens).

I own Majora's Mask and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, I agree with you the second analogue button is extremely handy for those games. However, I can see next handheld having both too. The only New 3DS exclusive game is Xenoblade and I really think the Wii version is much better, anyway.

I have lots of DS and 3DS games and I usually play with the 3D on. I paid a little amount of money when I exchanged my 3DS XL for a New 3D, for me it was a no-brainer. It's true that New 3DS's 3D it's more stable. However, it's very sensitive to the slightest change of light even indoors. I tried to manually calibrate it and it didn't get better. Anyway, I prefer to keep the tracking function on because then you don't have to care that much about your hands moving a little bit and getting a double vision of the screen which is extremely annoying. I wouldn't call "Super Stable 3D" "Super" but "More". I've owned all 3DS systems except 2DS. The (smaller) New 3DS is the best by far and its screens are much better than the original model and both XL models' (older and newer) screens.

It's true that New 3DS loads Miiverse and games much faster. The browser apparently is improved, too, but it fails to load long texts (e.g., a simple video game text guide). I don't remember if that happened on the original browser, but I remember the original didn't load videos and the new does (some of them, though). Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is the game that benefits the most of New 3D. Slightly better textures, faster loading times and good camera control. Xenoblade port, on the other hand, is a throwaway version if you can play the original version on Wii or the Wii U digital release. I've also owned the Circle Pad Pro and I think it's even worse than I had expected, having a second nub should have been there since the first model and I don't believe Nintendo when they say it was not possible.

If you have a huge DS and 3DS games collection and you like the 3D on, then it would be good to have the New 3DS because we don't know if the next handheld will be 3D compatible. However, you only have to wait a little longer to find out, anyway.

there is a high possibility that nintendo will announce a new handheld in 2016. i would wait. all the games you mentioned can be played on the original 3DS, too.

Ryzen 5 2600
2x8GB DDR4 RAM 3000mhz
GTX 1060 6GB

You can see it coming soon? Can you see all the games that are going to be on it at launch day too? People don't wanna buy a console because "the next console might be coming out soon™", then when the console does come out people don't wanna buy it console because "there aren't that many games out for it yet". Might as well just stop being an indecisive git and get a PC. "Oh, but in 6 months the parts will be cheaper".

You're buying a console, not a spouse. it's not exactly a lifelong investment.

Nintendo is still actively developing games for the 3DS, while there's more information available for Half Life 3 than there is for the Nintendo NX, if that gives you any concept of release dates.

VanillaLake wrote:

Play it in the dark then, or in a room where someone isn't turning the light on and off. You're not exactly walking around with the thing, so as long as you're not swinging it around wildly I don't see how this could be a problem.

HA! Key word there is "announce". Not "release", "announce". So you'll be waiting up to a year for information of a new handheld.

Except that we're talking about buying a New 3DS as an upgrade from an original 3DS. I wouldn't say to someone who wants a 3DS now to wait until whatever the NX is, I wouldn't say the same for someone who wants a Wii U now. That'd be stupid because if you did that you'd always be waiting. But someone who is upgrading? Well that's an entirely different thing. If you "upgraded" to a New 3DS in the hopes that it would be worth it for the "extra games" and then the NX came out which was an actual upgrade for a bit more with quite a few more games? You would regret it. So you should wait until there is a good reason if it ever comes.

On the PC gamer bit, off topic I know. But as someone who loves building new PCs and getting new tech? Of course you don't wait for the next thing, if you did you'd always be waiting because there's always something else. But there's a key difference. If you got a GTX760 just before the GTX960 came out? That doesn't mean you can't play the next Assassin's Creed. If you brought a DSi just before the 3DS launched? It does mean you can't play the next Pokemon.

i'd get it....who knows when the next handheld is coming out. I'm personally am upgrading from a 2ds and before that I had a XL. The New 3DS is big deal to me because I love being able to buy faceplates for it.

Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword

@Blathers: I don't have people turning lights on and off and yes, Super Stable 3D sensitivity is an issue. I don't want to play in the darkness and I already explained I prefer to have the tracking on. All I said is true, whether you like it or not. Nintendo already announced their next hardware (whatever it is) and gave it a name, I don't understand why you get all sarcastic about it. You complain a lot but you didn't ask the only question I made to you, forums are made to communicate, not to stupidly complain about each other's posts while ignoring what people concerns and questions are.
