I have two 2GB cards (one of which came with the system) that are pretty much full, and I noticed on Wal-Mart's website they have an 8 GB Sandisk one for about $8, and a 16 GB Sandisk one for about $10. Both are class 4 instead of class 10 though, so is that okay?
Also, since you can now backup the save data on the 3DS, can I just backup the data, delete my games off the old cards, redownload them to my new card, and restore the save data? Or is the save data backed up to your current card, and not the system itself (meaning I'd have to transfer them via computer)?
Also, just in case I can't get a normal card, will a microSD card with adapter work?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

To restore save data, you have to back them up on settings < data management. While the 3DS accepts both SD and Micro SD cards, the New 3DS XL only accepts Micro SD cards.
My advice is to get Sandisk Extreme Pro 32 GB either SD or Micro SD card because that's the max limit for the 3DS/New 3DS.
So I don't need to backup my save data on a computer then?
I don't think I'll ever need a 32GB card though (I don't download titles available at retail), so I might as well save some money for games by getting an 8GB or 16GB.

I would definitely back up on your PC first. Even if you don't "need" to, it's the safe thing to do.
I'd love to do so, but our only working computer right now is a laptop that for some reason lacks any sort of SD card slot (which is why I was so worried about it).

You could use an SD to USB adapter then, since you somehow need to pass all you data to the new SD card.
I just switched to a micro SD of 32gb, using an micro SD adapter for the 3DS and I just had to copy the files of the old SD and move them to the new one. So indirectly, you will be making a backup when you copy the files on the computer to pass them unto the new one.

What brand are your SD cards? You might wanna get one that's the same brand so that when you backup your stuff on your PC and try to dump it into the new card it actually works.
For whatever reason I couldn't copy stuff from my SanDisk 8 GB SD card into my new 32 GB SD card from a completely different brand. It wouldn't make my games, apps and saves show up at all for whatever reason, even after formatting the new SD card to work with the 3DS. I don't really know what exactly caused it but I've always thought of this as being the case, so just be wary of that.
Anyway, you could probably get a microSD adapter for really cheap from Amazon (I actually got one for about $3 and no shipping from a specific seller a few months back and it works perfectly) and get a microSD of any size (I recommend 16 GB - 32 GB if you get most/all of your games digitally like me) to use with your 3DS and possibly New 3DS. I don't think you need to worry too much about it being Extreme or some other fancy thing. As long as the storage capacity is enough you should be good. I've never had any issue with slower loading, saving, etc. with the 3 different cards I've had throughout (original 2 GB > 8 GB replacement > 32 GB replacement, current).
Of the two that I have, one is the Toshiba that came with the system, and the other is a Wii branded Sandisk I have, that didn't see much use on the Wii.
BTW, how do you format an SD card (if I have to do so)? The Toshiba that came with the system (obviously) and the Sandisk both work as is with no trouble.
BTW, if I'm unable to find a way to transfer the data on my current cards to our PC, I'll probably just keep the data on them, use the new card for nothing but new games, and swap between the three as needed (which I already do with my current 2).

The 3DS will try to format it to work with your system if it's the very first time you've inserted it into it, iirc.
Hello again. Just want to know if a PNY brand card would work?
My brother has a device he's never going to use, that came with an 8GB card, and says I can have the card if I want it.
Any brand should work with the card. The only issue is actually copying over data from one brand SD card > PC > new SD diff brand. It's worth a shot though, just go for it while keeping some backups, maybe the issue I told you about only happened with me because of something I may have not done properly.
