I'm gonna try to be as brief as possible with this: I lost my Mario Kart 7 Game Cartridge a few weeks ago, and have been considering re-buying it on the eShop. I'm mostly concerned about recovering StreetPass data and my Coin total, as I don't want to slog through the game a second time to re-unlock everything. Can I perform the data transfer without the cartridge, or I am out of luck in this regard?

Exactly.

Can't answer your question, but this underscores the need to be able to back up save data to the SD card. Why is this simple function — which was available on the Wii — not available?

You need the cartridge to transfer the data, unfortunately.

A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It's jolted by every pebble on the road.

That's why I think the Save Data Transfer Tool is so weird... You can't use it without the game card, for one...

All right, that's disappointing, but thanks anyway for the response.

Exactly.
