Topic: Rune Factory vs Harvest Moon vs Fantasy Life

I watched some game reviews on Youtube and came across the Rune Factory titles. Seems kinda cool to me to have the gameplay of Harvest Moon combined with some fighting rpg elements, dungeons etc. Also there is this Fantasy Life title wich apparently covers the same ideas.

I will probably want to buy one of these games in the future but am uncertain which one to choose. Of course I would like to go for Rune Factory 4 but it wasnt published physically in Europe and I am not yet into this digital way of gaming (why couldnt they just go on with the region free stuff of the DS... ). There are of course the first three Rune Factory titles available for the DS, and I guess Rune Factory 3 would be the best of them, which are your favorites btw?

Harvest Moon on the other hand seems to me a little bit limited as far as gameplay is concerned when compared to the other two, so I will probably give a pass.

Now what about Fantasy Life? How does it compare to the Rune Factory Games, especially number 4? I read some mixed opinions about it and somehow feel that Rune Factory might be better but then I havent played any of them yet.

Would you buy Rune Factory 3 or any other DS Rune factory game over Fantasy Life?

Would you buy Rune Factory 4 over Fantasy Life regardless if you can get a physical copy or not?

Or would say Fantasy Life was actually better than Rune Factory?

Actually I only played RF4, so I can't really say...but the game will keep you busy for quite a while.

I've played RF4 and Fantasy Life. If you're looking for a life sim, RF4 would definitely be the way to go. It really is just an RPG version of Harvest Moon. You can farm, date people, and fight monsters. Fantasy Life is a bit different. It is definitely better looking than RF4 (which has atrocious 3D effects). You don't farm or date, instead you build up your own "Life". You can choose one of several lives including wizard, miner, paladin, blacksmith, tailor, mercenary and a few others. You can switch between lives easily and level up your stats in each while retaining skills from Life to Life. Both are very fun games but I would recommend Fantasy Life more.

Buying Rune Factory 4 would be a no brainer, but this digital only thing (in Europe) somehow puts me off. I am not entirely against digital but people should get the choice, same goes for ace attorney dual destinies. In regard to the 3ds, games are lost when your handheld gets stolen for example because they are tied to your console and not your account. Besides I am somewhat of a collector, I like to have my games on a shelf and stuff (a small time collector to be honest, I dont buy every game there is, just the ones I like and will DEFINITELY play).

I will probably get fantasy life later rather than sooner...

Haven't gotten to Fantasy Life yet, but very excited to do so. I've done Rune Factory 1-3, 2 is actually my favorite. I can't even play Harvest Moon any more now that I've experienced Rune Factory.

lol I tried to download the digiital version earlier.. after having downloaded 3 games, apparently my 3DS has not enough memory left :') how pathetic... gotta buy a new SD card first

and I thought games were tied to your nintendo network account? what if I wanna buy a new 3DS, does that mean I lose all my games? That's not very logical

Thats the ugly truth! However, if you buy a new 3ds you can transfer all your stuff. But like I said when you lose it somehow then everything is lost, as the games are tied to your console and NOT your account. All you can do then is format your SD card.

Fantasy Life is very different from RF/HM. It's kind of its own thing, to be honest.

If you want an RPG with a fleshed out multiplayer component, get FL. If you want a life sim with RPG elements, such as battling and dungeon exploration, get RF4. If you want a straight life sim, get HM.

Ah I see.. but they're able to see that you've bought those games because of your account, right? Cause that's how I get nintendo stars (coins in the USA) for nintendo club... As soon as I download the game, I can get the stars. So wth?

Honestly I don't know what happens if... to be on the safe side you should do some digging, maybe contact Nintendo directly...

Just to note, your downloads are tied to your NNID. If your 3DS gets lost or stolen, you can call Nintendo and they will deactivate your NNID on the missing device so that you can activate it on a new one and redownload them. Your games are by no means gone forever.

As for which game to get, I prefer Rune Factory 4, but if you're not really into digital, then I think Fantasy Life is a fine choice too. I prefer RF4 for having well-written and compelling characters, characters that make you want to replay the game several times just to focus on different relationships and find out more about each one. There's more options and more to do in Fantasy Life, but it lacks the grip of Rune Factory. Depends on what you want out of a game, I suppose.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

Thanks a lot for the input. Actually I have made a decision, since I couldnt really decide which rune factory to get and fantasy life being not a little less rune factory like I decided to go for Rune factory frontier for the wii, for now, I might as well pick up fantasy life, but definitely later... graphically this might be the best version and from what I have read its not that bad storywise either... think I will pass on harvest moon alltogether

@ miss dark - so you say golden sun has actually quite a story? - I was thinking about that game as well! But I have viewed some reviews on youtube and learned that the story was a little less focused. I think I might have to give it a try and see for myself

Oh my, you haven't played golden sun yet? That's a classic This is a fantastic game... it left me quite speechless at several moments. I remember listening to the soundtrack years later because I suddenly had to think bout it again and I had goosebumps all over. Golden sun:

  • is touching
  • has amazing characters
  • has a superb OST
  • has a very well-developed combat system (turn-based)

Edit: I can't tell you anything bout the story cause I'll just spoil it for you then..

No, I havent! I am new to nintendo consoles (bought a wii u and 2ds this month). THeres alot of catching up for me to do! In fact I have been mostly investing into ds and wii games lately. Want to get them before they are gone forever. Wii U and 3ds games will be available for much longer I guess.

Just btw, I have ordered rune factory for wii last week (will get it in the middle of january) and have the option of getting harvest moon animal parade from the same seller, new and sealed for 25 eur. Would buying them both make any sense? Are they much different? I know rune factory has some fighting and is a spin off of the ordinary harvest moon series but what about story and gameplaywise? Would I possibly have fun playing harvest moon after rune factory? Is rune factory the superior game? Has animal parade any values beyond rune factory that make it worth playing even without the dungeon crawling?
