I recall seeing that artwork floating around on the net a few weeks ago. I hope more details are released. I'd like to know why they cancelled it, and what they're working on next.
As for Metroid 3DS, I still live in hope it'll happen, eventually.

I hope that one is cancelled and they work on something else. I don't like the artstyle they were thinking of with her suit. Unless it's a 2D metroid it'd be better on the console anyway.

Eh, I think Retro will make Dread anyways...just can't decide whether I want it for 3DS or Wii U since it should be a 2D game.
2D is probably better for 3DS and 3D for Wii U. The 3D graphics would probably enhance a 2D game better, whereas Prime style is just begging for Gamepad support on the Wii U and HD graphics for larger, more open environments.

3D for 3DS and 2D for Wii U!!!!!
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Nope, they wouldn't be as good if they were switched.

After experiences like Steamworld Dig and Guacamelee I would much rather see a 2d Metroid on my 3ds and a full one 3d one on the U please. If they reversed it I would cry. The Wii U needs a killer fps style game all their own even if it's not full on fps.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
I mean, seeing a 2.5-like Metroid game for the Wii U would be awesome, though.
It wouldn't at all. The biggest problem the Wii U has is that's its saturated with 2D plaftormers for $50. Metroid being more like the Prime series visually is more interesting but adds to big heavy weights like Xenoblade and Zelda.
Now if its DD like shadow complex I wouldn't mind it all.
WAT!

A Metroid fps would be amazing, and something the Wii U really needs considering the lack of third party support. Splatoon looks amazing (and with Zelda U it is the game I want to get the most), but there's room for more options.
I'm glad that particular art work didn't made it in. I mean, I'm all for Samus being more athletic and physical in her abilities, but that doesn't mean they have to turn the Varia suit into modern art.
The company pitched its idea to Nintendo, but Nintendo didn't want to go any further. Nintendo wasn't ready to move the franchise into a 2.5D direction at the time (around 2012) and the project was cancelled.
>Releases Other M in 2010.
>Not ready to move into 2.5D in 2012.
Seems legit.
Honestly, the only bad part about this concept that we know of is the artstyle, I'd be up for the kind of gameplay they described.
It kinda looks like what Mighty No.9 was beginning to look like before going 3d modeled. I love the art style and would have made Metroid's view be taken slightly differently apart from being all 8-16 bit or having everyone drool at Samus while she's in a 3D modeled world. Still, maybe Nintendo should have went through with this. It's been long since our last Metroid and this would have least quenched a bit of thirst for some fans while Nintendo starts/continues/finishes their next Metroid project.

Just sayin' Nintendo, Vanillaware could make a mean, beautiful 2D Metroid. Granted, Nintendo would have to muzzle the horn dog side of their artists so they don't totally objectify Samus, but they could pull it off I think.
