On the final design. http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=18233

Great feedback on both designs. There are obvious strong points and weaks spots to both. It looks like the original design is probably best with some nontradition way to control the camera in 3d games. Style, shoulder buttons, abc, titl/gyro

(ignore the horrible copy paste job)

I like the way it looks now. I don't think people will accidently turn off the power, look at the DSi my mom has trouble turning it off on purpose. And I really hate the idea of putting the slide-pad on the other side. I you really want to do something like that do it to the d-pad.

I think the analog stick is needed on the left to make playing 3D games easier. But the directional pad is in an awkward spot. But its hard to say without actually playing it.

Yea of course, I have no problem with either being on the other side, my point was mainly to illustrate the fact that if we have both on the same side (ala psp, which I currently have and use) we can only control one at a time- meaning camera angles on a system that is going to have alot of 3D may be hard to control.

Like you guys said, I am not opposed to having the DPAD on the opposite side, I just would really like them to not be on the both on the same side, it just seems like it is wasting an Input device.

Games can always use R and L or touch screen to manage the camera. Moving the slider would mean not being able to reach the face buttons, which would make all sorts of games impossible. The current set-up could even use the face buttons as if they were the C buttons of the N64 controller. So basically, every single input option has the possibility of camera control.

I also have no idea how someone would "accidentally" press the power button when getting into the game. It's at the bottom, the face buttons at the top. If someone can't aim his finger that precisely, I imagine he'd have far greater problems with video games than this, haha. And it's not like you can accidentally press a button with the stylus. That would be difficult. Keep in mind that you may have to hold it down like on the DSi, so even if I have greatly overestimated the average gamer's dexterity, I still don't think it's an issue at all.

Yea, I agree, the only problem is we only have one analog to work with. If two was an option then everything would be perfect

haha side note- notice the controller is purple people

I never hardly used the C stick on the gamecube. Even so, that's would be easily made up for with the stylus.

Yea neither do I, I have just read people were talking about how easy it would be to hit (in regards to power button)- obviously I have no experience with the system. I doubt I would be one of those people but that doesnt mean I dont care about the little guy lol. And good idea with the idea of other ways of input to move the camera. I know in some games the PsP also uses the face buttons to move the camera, and the ipodtouch/phone uses the gyro/tilt to move the camera- so even with out a second analog stick we would stick be able to do.

I think they intend to have camera control done by the use of the gyro and accelerometer, I think the idea is to be moving around a window viewing into the game world.

Thing is, when it comes to the d-pad, what else can you do? switch it around with the analog? Unless they made a way (doubtful) for the player to move them around according to each gaming situation. or ad an extended/able handle on the left side.

I've accidentally powered off system instead of pausing over ten times, would prefer to switch the power and start buttons in that image.

I hope they at least mention in the book how easy it is to ruin the shoulder buttons from dust, etc.

Then you could use the a,b,x,y buttons as an optional directional, which has been done before with the N64 controller.

How?! You have to hold it down for like 3 seconds to turn off, plus its on the other side of the Start and Select buttons. And the DSLite/DSi/DSXL don't even have buttons on the face of the hand held.

I agree with this. Could you imagine playing New Super Mario Bros or Mario Kart DS on the 3DS if the d-pad and a/b/x/y buttons were on the same side? It would be almost impossible to hold the system while playing.

Instead of relocating the analogue or D-Pad, would be nice if they put a second analogue below the ABXY buttons. Might make it kinda ugly to look at, but it means that lefties like me can play games that use analogue+touchscreen, and it offers better camera control than trying to use a stylus and all the face buttons whilst playing.

@Raylax And it would make it easier to play GCN re-makes too.
