Topic: Recommendations for Other RPGS based on enjoyment of Persona Q

New to the 3ds after getting a New 3DS Mario land bundle. I picked up Persona Q at purchase and am about 15 hours in and absolutely loving it . Looking for reccommendations for other great not only RPGs , but games in general for the system. I did try out the Stella Glow Demo and really enjoyed it . I am aware that the Etrian Odyssey games are very similar with regard to the mapping / dungeon crawling aspect , so I will be looking into those games . Any recommendations outside of those would be great.
Thanks in advance !

The gameplay from Persona Q is taken straight, almost unchanged, from Etrian Odyssey, so definitely check them out.

If you want something more retro, in both style and difficulty, try The Dark Spire by Atlus. It's for DS.

It's similar to EO in gameplay, but a lot... Harder. It's also a beautiful game, and has an alternative retro mode where the dungeons are simple wireframes and enemies are pixel art. Even the music changes to beeps and bops.

I say just look into any Atlus game in general. Three Etrian Odyseey games, four Shin Megami Tensei games, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, and likely more I'm forgetting.

Thanks for the suggestions .. I will definitely be looking to get all of those . Was wondering if Yo Kai watch was any good ? Have never played Pokemon , and it seems like it is a bit like those games but looks kind of quirky. The bravely default games look good also. I am going to be busy! I hope the NX is a handheld based system like some of the rumors report. I have never been into handheld gaming before , but now I think I am hooked . The 3ds is a terrific system

Well, there's Persona 3 and 4 on PS2 which I'm playing now because of Persona Q, although the gameplay style is very different. My favorite RPG ever is Dragon Quest 8, and I loved Persona Q as well, so idk if that's work too. Shin Megami Tensei 4 is great, and SMT 4 Apocalypse is coming later this month.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gates to Infinity might be up your alley too; I know I really enjoyed it despite it being a tad easy.

Actually, if what you want is a bit more challenge, Super Mystery Dungeon is considerably harder than Gates to Infinity.

It's a bit more in line with Etrian Mystery Dungeon. Featuring the same dungeon generation (more similar to the original games than to GtI) and some of the concepts from that one.

@Meowpheel Etrian Mystery Dungeon was...too easy to be enjoyable, IMO. The challenge rogue-likes provide is a very important part of the experience, as frustrating as it can be. So...just how easy was Gates to Infinity?

@LinktotheFuture Except, be warned, the story his stretched out to hell. There's no getting around it, the first 10 hours alone could've been over and done with in less than an hour in practically any other game that didn't feel like 200+ hours of JRPG was it's main selling point. The only thing that's kept me going is the dialogue - both the actual dialogue in the game, and the lines I've been making up for the silent protagonist. Actually...that last bit is my favorite part of any Dragon Quest game, but it really works here. I figure the main character would be more like Bilbo Baggins, in that he's being constantly strung along with little to no say about it, yet at the same time, no one seems to give a damn about him, so he's sort of shoved to the backround, both for story and comedic reasons. On top of that, he's been established by the NPCs as kind of a scamp, frequently shirking responsibility and going along with the rambunctious and irresponsible prince's 'crazy' schemes that always seem to work out despite all logic pointing to the contrary (almost disappointingly so. I just kept waiting for twists near the beginning that just...never happened). Needless to say, I've been going to town with that.

@JBDD
Played the demo today and I did enjoy it . I assume the demo is just a taste of the full release and that the gameplay broadens a bit as the story moves along ?

@CanisWolfred
Is the combat system / gameplay an unexpected let down ? Really thinking I want this game , but if the only redeeming quality is good writing and the rest of the package is a chore , I think I would want to play some other titles first and come back to this later

I am already to the point where I can battle enemies, and I enjoyed getting to this point. I agree, the dialogue is very well done.

@Bigskyorbust It's Dragon Quest - It's the game all JRPGs are based on, so the combat is competant. Fairly quick 'n' snappy, but no real frills to it. At least there's a lot of customization in this one, once you get the ability to switch classes. 'Course, that takes forever because of how bad the pacing is. And I can't emphasise that enough, it will make every excuse to waste your time, and considering what it's keeping you from, I can't help but get annoyed by all the extra trips around the tightly constrained and largely-empty island environments, packed to the brim with so many enemies that I start to wonder why they bothered removing random encounters at all, just so I can talk to somebody or go on some fetch quest for increasingly nonsensicle reasons. It's hard without spoiling anything, but even the part at the beginning where you're with the prince trying to figure out how to enter the temple, I was having Blue's Clues flashbacks because of how much they'd skirt around the obvious answers.

Granted, the story's pretty good despite that - in fact, here's the best way I think I can describe it:

Grandpa Dragon Quest saw Final Fantasy 7 being all angsty and asks if he needs some help, to which FF7 replies, "what's angst?"

Grandpa Dragon Quest then sits FF7 atop his knee, and explains it to him in the form of a sprawling poetic epic, over the course of 7 days and 7 nights, leaving the boy enthralled and enlightened. "Thanks, Grandpa!" says Final Fantasy, now ready to move on to adulthood with a newfound sense of confidence and purpose.

Then he marries his cousin, FF6, and proceeds to have 3 inbred children. Grandpa Dragon Quest is very disappointed, and wishes his wife, Chrono Trigger, hadn't died so young

Lol .. I think you just sold me on it in the midst of the critique. I expect a bit of frustrated wandering in any JRPG.. Comes with the territory .

Nice blues clues reference .. Extra points for that
