It's now been out for a year in Europe and North America. What rating would you give the 3DS's first year?
Also give the positives and negatives of the first year.

I rate it a 7/10.

POSITIVES:

  • The 3D and its slider works well
  • They gave the "Ambassadors" 20 free games after they system's huge price drop
  • 2 Mario games less than one month apart from each other. (Even though Mario Kart 7 was sort of rushed)
  • New Kid Icarus game (It counts, since it was before the EU and US anniversary dates)

NEGATIVES:

  • No eShop until June
  • Not many good retail games for the first few months either, pretty much the only games to play until June were Street Fighter, Pilotwings, and the built-in games.
  • Nintendo refuses to fix Mario Kart 7's infamous Maka Wuhu glitch
  • The fact that in February, they took the Four Swords game off the eShop completely instead of changing it a paid download. (I got my copy and a copy for my friend, but what about the people that are just now getting their 3DS?)

EDIT: I also posted the things I hope Nintendo does for the system next year in https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/3ds/3ds_features_that_need... (My post is http://tinyurl.com/cvnaduj)

The ambassador refund for those that bought the the machine before the price cut was nice overall the GBA selection I felt was excellent the NES selection less so, retail wise I haven't had much luck since I'm not a huge Mario or racer fan so far only OOT3D feels like a triple A title to me, but never owned a DSi so plenty of download titles to try and 3DS VC has been pretty good too got at least in the early stage feel it went through a bit of a boring few weeks but with GG games finally arriving its beginning to look more interesting again so far I give it a very disappointing 5/10.

5/10. It was actually worse than that but I got a ton of free games which partially made up for it. But in general, outside of Vita (and even Vita's best launch title was actually delayed), there hasn't been a good launch for a system since the GCN. The modern day trend that you can wait more than half a year before releasing must-have original content is pretty terrible and how long it took for major game releases to get even close to consistently actually living up to expectations was probably my biggest problem with the current generation of consoles.

What I'm saying is, this should be lower but it's average because terrible launches and first years for a console is sadly nothing new.

Yeah it had a rough start, but once Christmas of 2011 rolled around and we got Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 nearly back to back, the system blasted off with sales. I personally have had more fun playing my 3DS this past year than quite a while. Just making it into the 3DS's first year is Kid Icarus Uprising, another amazing game. The eShop has improved greatly since it first started, and the 3DS now has a pretty good game library. I respect Nintendo a lot for how they handled such a rough year, and its certainly payed off. The 3DS having outsold both DS and Wii in their first years, color me impressed. Good job 3DS, your definitley a fighter.

I would have to say 7/10

It started of rough the high price tag and the lack of launch games and no eShop for a few months even made me not want to buy it at launch. However it was nice of Nintendo to give the early buyers the free games when they could have just said hey FU its not our fault you bought it early. Like most systems it didnt really shine till the Holiday Season when Mario Kart 7 and SM3DL were released (Yeah you had some good games come out like OoT and Starfox but those were remakes not original games), and after the holiday season it continued to have strong releases like Metal Gear Solid 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, and just a few days ago Kid Icarus Uprising. Now that the first year is over I expect we will see better and better releases.

Overall not a bad first year but IMO they should have held off releaseing the 3DS till at least the eShop was up. But as I said it was nice to see them give a little to those loyal customers who did deal with the awkward first few months.

It was a rough beginning for the 3DS but Nintendo quickly picked up the pace, so overall I'd give it a 8.5/10.

Cons:

  • Fairly weak launch titles
  • Lack of major features (eShop and Swapnote)
  • Still used friend codes
  • Launch price
  • Lack of built in 2nd circle pad
  • Battery life

Pros:

  • Major price drop
  • Excellent software line up throughout the rest of the year
  • eShop launch along with several amazing titles added
  • Swapnote, Nintendo video, Nintendo Zone
  • Ambassador for those who bought 3DS full price
  • Great built in features
  • 3D is amazing when executed properly
  • Fun as hell!

This year is looking like an even stronger year with awesome games like Heroes of Ruin, Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, Thearhythm Final Fantasy, Rhythm Thief, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Mario Tennis Open, and so much more coming our way, never really been into handheld gaming (had a GBA but only had two games) but I'm extremely grateful I got the 3DS.

The 3DS turned out to be a Christmas present for many people. A price drop took true balls. However there were so many flaws on launch, that it is really unknown why the 3DS failed in months 2-5.

7/10. Better than the DS' first year, but not quite up to the GBA. I can't wait to see what's next.

i give the 3ds 8/10. I got it only a few weeks ago, and i love it.(i am using it for internet, to write this) the internet is pretty decent because it is faster than dsi. the lack of flashplayer or html5 is a bummer, because we cant watch online videos, off of websites like: youtube, facebook, dailymotion etc. other than internet, the built in software is very impressive(even though i haven't really even played them). the graphics and quality of the character and world models in the 3ds software is allowed to be beautiful because of the super powerful cpu. the older software from ds and dsi is a little muddied up from the big difference in resolution. but talking games- crappy launch titles, not counting remakes. i own mk7 and played demos of recent releases and they are whole lot better than steel diver and whatever crap was first released that i had tried out. eshop is good, nintendo show is a great idea for seeing what is coming out or new. and the differenent videos for almost all the dlc is a fantastic idea for them to sell what they have on there. that is my opinion on the 3ds and it's first year.(my hand is tired from going around this 3ds keyboard )

With no Animal Crossing, I'm docking one point. The launch was awful and the eight month drought (with the exception of Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 64 3D), was very annoying. Along with nothing on Wii, Nintendo didn't really put out much in terms of content this past year.

With Super Mario 3D Land, Resident Evil: Revelations, Tales of the Abyss and Kid Icarus, it not only did better than its predecessor, Nintendo DS, but it blew away many Nintendo home console's first years on the market with ease. So there's that.

The system is simply amazing, and I don't think Nintendo did much wrong, other than releasing the system at about the worst possible season. Mass producing so many systems and then failing to sell them made it seem like more of a failure than it really was, and I think sales would have picked up for the holidays even with a less drastic price cut. If they would have released it for the 2010 holidays in limited supply, it would have been a hot commodity and generated a lot more hype, like what happened with the Wii — really surprised they didn't try to replicate that rather than waiting to build up a larger supply of systems for release after the holidays when everyone had spent their money already. I'm not too concerned about the launch titles, because most systems start off with a small lineup, and it's not like we had WiiWare and the browser on the Wii right away either, but the masses bought the Wii regardless even if they quickly tired of Wii Sports and didn't end up playing it beyond that.

9/10 - the machine is amazing and I take it and use it everywhere - only lost 1point from my score because of Region lock - I can't use my Korg ds10+ cart on my Uk 3ds. . . ..
THe 3d effect really adds to getting immersed into games such as Samurai Warriors and Resident Evel Revelations - it really is superb! and Kid icarus Production values are extremely high!!! Fabulous!!!

When you consider the huge price drop before Christmas, all the awesome games, and brilliance of the glasses free 3D gimmick, I'd give it a 10. It's easily the best handheld out there. If the 3DS had two circle pads already built in and retail games were priced less than $40, I'd give it an 11.

I love my 3DS console, and think the system has a tremendously bright future. But if rating the entire first year of release I can't go higher than 4/10. (Only rating the last 3-6 months would effectively double that number.)

There is no denying that 3DS had weak software for the first 6 months, that there are some minor hardware design issues, that firmware updates brought significant improvements to the system that should have been ready for launch, that the Circle Pad Pro snafu and rumors of impending redesign didn't hurt sales, or that pricing wasn't ideal as you now see the system on sale for half (or less) of the launch price. Not exactly a small list of concerns...

Those issues have mostly been fixed, but they made the first year of release far less enjoyable than it could have been for 3DS gamers. The good news is that it really looks like the worst is behind us and 3DS owners have a lot of great content coming their way now!

The 3DS has done much better than the Nintendo DS in its first year. I have Pilotwings Resort, Ridge Racer 3D, Super Street Fighter IV 3D, Ocarina of Time 3D, Dead or Alive Dimensions, Star Fox 64 3D, Samurai Warrior Chronicles, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Resident Evil Revelations and Kid Icarus Uprising in terms of a retail library, which is equal to a quarter of my total Nintendo DS library already from its first year. Its 3DSWare titles have provided the freshness and creativity of quality new IP titles such as Pushmo, Freakyforms, Dillon's Rolling Western and my favorite Mutant Mudds. I've also downloaded the third Mighty game from Wayforward, and have downloaded many classic games from the VC and 3D sections of the shop, experiencing for the first time Metroid II and Kirby's Dream Land among many others. Being a very big Metroid fan, I'm very proud of having Metroid, Metroid II and Metroid Fusion on my system, and I hope that selection later includes Super Metroid, Metroid Zero Mission and an eShop Metroid sidescroller. Despite a handful of bad decisions, I feel that the third party offering on the 3DS is just as stellar as its first party, especially with the likes of Resident Evil Revelations, Samurai Warrior Chronicles and Mutant Mudds in the former. Awesome system so far, but it really needs to see a new Metroid soon.

Pros:

  • Plenty of great titles to experience
  • High quality selection of unique eShop IPs
  • Excellent classic titles being offered right now for download
  • Great level of third party support alongside the consistently great first party support

Cons:

  • Dust magnet screens
  • Circle pad imprint on top half of system
  • no new Metroid experience being hinted at
  • no eShop until June
  • no video viewing in the online browser
  • no proper messaging system despite the desire to further online experiences
  • small L + R buttons
  • slightly awkward set-up when trying to use the d-pad to play games

I got the Zelda 3DS in November, so I would give its first year a 9/10.

Cons:
-Lack of Freebies
-No 3rd party online video through browser
-Lack of external services
-Questionable Eshop design
-Limited browser functionality
-One app at a time...

Pros:
-Classic games through VC (I beg you Nintendo; Pokemon Crystal)
-Great menu interface
-Awesome variety of games I CARE about (I don't care how many apps are in the App Store/Android Market, I don't care about many of them)
-Great retail releases for a first year console (DS had Pokemon a year after, but D/P were so terrible I don't consider actual pokemon games)
-Innovative use of 3D
-Great 3rd party support (we really need to see more TV ads and campaigns for 3rd parties)
-Awesome external design
-AR functions before it was cool (Looking at you VITA)
-Online features never seen before in a Nintendo console (Sony can brag all they want; they don't own a market. Many consumers use Nintendo portables and ARE NOT familiar with online features on a portable. Then, there's you guys, but you get what I mean; AVERAGE consumer)

Rough start, but great and eventful year overall.
