So, as far as I know, there is no active thread for ranking the Pokemon games, and I didn't want to clutter up the Sun/Moon thread with random lists. (Personally, I'm a sucker for ranking stuff! )

B2W2 were my first and the ones I've played the most even to this day. Perfect amount of Pokemon, great story, and tons of content. HGSS is also superbly made and a blast to play, but a bit outdated, so that makes it only #2. I loved ORAS; felt it fixed (somewhat) a few problems with X and Y, and Soaring is one of my favorite new features in any Pokemon game. And while X and Y aren't very good Pokemon games, they're still fun for me and I enjoyed what they brought to the table. FRLG is the one in the middle. Fortunately, DPPt gets great at the end, but it's awful at the beginning, which is why it's so low. And RSE is even lower because I played it after ORAS. Not a bad game, but not the first I would revisit. And finally, RBY is 8th because, while it is SUPER FUN, it's a mess compared to the other games and only worth playing for completionist/nostalgia purposes.

I haven't played many, but I will rank the ones I did play:
1- X/Y. Many say they aren't good pokemon games, but to be honest I stopped playing pokemon for such a long time and the features added in past games along with the new ones that this game had made me discover again my love for pokemon, like Pokemon Red and Blue all over again. Personally, I find them as beautiful, fun games that also got me into the competitive side of pokemon and I also loved many of the new pokemon designs, like hawlucha, who became one of my favourite pokemon ever. If the game wouldn't have forced you those "friends" and if it had more interesting villains that Team Flare, it would have been flawless ( for me, everyone calm down). Also, the haunted house was a bit underwhelming.
2- Pokemon Blue/ Red. I loved them when they came out and they will always be treasured since they gave me ome of the best moments in my childhood.
3- Pokemon Silver/ Crystal. Amazing games, and the brief sprite animation made Crystal the definitive version.
4- Pokemon Emerald. What can I say? I did enjoy Pokemon Emerald but at that point I felt a bit tired of Pokemon. Still, the new features managed to interest me enough to get through the game.
5- Pokemon Fire Red. Same as above. To be fair this one and Emerald are tied. They were both fun and while this one felt more tiresome because it was a remake of a game I already played many times, the nostalgia and my love for the original games were enough to make me enjoy the game and go through it at least one time. Also, it was awesome to se that brief resume of what you did in your last gameplay.
X&Y are just incredibly well done games. They've made the games feel modern as opposed to the DS games which kinda felt like they were a bit out of place. Particularly Black & White. Diamond and Pearl I like because that generation had some of my favourite Pokemon designs in the series. Rotom, Infernape, Lucario, Toxicroak and two new evolutions for Eevee. There was the new physical/special attack split which when combined with a new evolution for one of my favourite Sneasel made me super happy.
Going down the list Gold/Silver/Crystal added so much ontop of the original games. Again some of the best Pokemon were from that generation. The first generation was the original and by far it has the best Pokemon. Mostly because they're the ones we've known since the beginning. Black/White and the sequel? The story was great but by then the game seemed like it was being held back. There also weren't as many Pokemon I liked from that generation. The Gen 2 remakes were fantastic at the time but I don't see any need to go back to them now. And Gen 3? ..... Luvdisk, enough said.

Gen 4 had tons of content, was challenging and had amazing features introduced. Gen 5 and 6 are right behind it - gen 5 just felt fresh and had a better overall pace and gen 6 mostly because of the move to the 3DS. I really like gen 2 (silver was my first pokemon ever), gen 3 is also nice but didnt amaze me and gen 1 just pales in comparison to any other pokemon experience you can play.

A while ago, I said I was going to show you my rankings. So, here it is.
Also, I made mine earlier but, I didn't finish it and wasn't able to keep what I made so far.
One more thing, the first four entries on this are as close as they can be.
1. Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
This is a top contender for my favorite game of all time. Out of all mainstream Pokémon games, this one has the most content. With two regions, Johto and Kanto, along with the Battle Frontier and Battle Athelon, there's many things to do. This is just Pokémon at its best! The version I went with is Pokémon SoulSilver.
2. Pokémon Black and White/Pokémon Black 2 and White 2
Number two on this is the entirety of Generation V. With its great story, wonderful characters, and interesting Pokémon, these were definitely memorable titles. Some of my favorite Pokémon from Unova are all three starters, every legendary from this region, Chandelure, Darmanitan, Zoroark, Braviary, and Krookodile. And if you couldn't tell from my forum signature, N is one of my favorite Pokémon characters. Game Freak also decided to make a sequel to Pokémon Black and White, instead of a 3rd version like Yellow, Crystal, or Emerald. I personally think this was a great decision, as it was something fresh and Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 were also amazing! I think this was a great generation. I own both Pokémon Black and White, but I only have Pokémon White 2.
3. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl/Pokémon Platinum
Shaymin, Lucario, Croagunk, Rotom, Gallade, Garchomp, Empoleon and the Creation trio (Dialga, Palkia and Giratina) are all some of my favorite Pokémon. All of them are also from the Sinnoh region. This region is home to many great Pokémon like the ones I said before, and other ones like Weavile, Torterra, Infernape, Lopunny, Manaphy, and Munchlax. Both of these examples have a lot of Pokémon, which goes to show many of them I love from this region! There are some good characters from this game too, like the champion of Sinnoh Cynthia, who is the champion to have made the most appearances. Cynthia's really popular too, she's one of the Pokémon characters to have gotten a Nenderoid, alongside Red, Blue, and N. These games were amazing! Out of these three, I own Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Platinum.
4. Pokémon X and Y
It was very hard deciding whether to put X and Y or DPP at number 3, so I practically like them the same.
Many people criticize Pokémon X and Y because of its story and post-game, but I still think X and Y are amazing! This was the introduction of Mega Evolution, a concept I find really great. And while there was a smaller number of Pokémon introduced in this region, there's still many great ones. Some of my favorites are Greninja, Braixen, Xerneas, Hoopa, Aegislash, Goodra, Talonflame, Pangoro, and Klefki. Pokémon X and Y are also the first games in the series to have trainer customization. You can now choose the skin tone, hairstyle, hair color, eye color and clothes of your trainer, making them unique. Overall, I think Pokémon X and Y are spectacular games in the Pokémon franchise. I went with Pokémon X.
5. Pokémon Red and Blue/Pokémon Yellow Special Pikachu Edition
Pokémon RBY are what kickstarted the Pokémon craze, making a franchise that's very iconic. The Kanto region, like Sinnoh, had many great Pokémon designs, some of mine being Mewtwo, Nidoking, Mew, all three of the starters (Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle), Pikachu, Snorlax, Eevee, and Jigglypuff. I can't deny Gen I does have charm, but I think every generation was boasting with charm. Team Rocket was very good, and Blue was a great rival. The Elite 4 and gyms were also memorable. And if I said the games aged very well I'd be lying, but I still think RBY are great. Out of these three, I've played Pokémon Yellow.
6. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
I know these games are number six on my list, but it doesn't mean that I don't like them. Infact, I really enjoyed them. While it doesn't have things like the Battle Frontier from Pokémon Emerald, ORAS still has some great things about it. I feel like the atmosphere of different things like when Groudon or Kyogre are unleashed is very memorable. Another great moment was your final battle against Wally before you challenge the Pokémon League. That epic music that plays really adds to the moment. The moment feels very powerful and the two Pokémon come off as really threatening. The new Mega Evolutions are also very appreciated, as some of my favorite Mega's are from ORAS. I think that Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are really good remakes of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire that are worth playing.
These are all of the mainstream Pokémon titles that I have played. I really enjoyed each and every one of them. Another Pokémon game I love is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness/Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, but I didn't include them on my list because it's not a mainstream title. Anyways, this is my list. This is my opinion which changes sometimes.

1) Pokemon Black/White: Great story, interesting characters, and lots of new Pokemon (sure, the ice cream Pokemon was stupid, but most of the new designs were solid). All-around my favorite set of Pokemon games.
2) Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow: Nostalgia. I'm willing to admit that. I just love these games. They have aged incredibly well for Gameboy JRPGs, too.
3) Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver: Almost perfect remakes. And, while it's a small thing, being able to have a Pokemon walk behind you was a wonderful, charming touch. Also, like the original, it has an AMAZING postgame.
4) Pokemon Gold/Silver: So many great innovations on the formula of the first game. A time system, breeding, shiny Pokemon, the refinement of the Special stat. Incredible postgame. Just an all-around awesome follow-up to the original set of games in every way.
5) Pokemon X/Y: Bland characters and way too easy, but the overhauled engine that made Pokemon look... well... like what you saw in the anime was awesome. Incredible refinement of the multiplayer features. Character customization. Pokemon Amie. Also, roller-skates are a lot of fun to use.
6) Pokemon Diamond/Pearl: I could never get into this set of games. There was just something I didn't like about them. I'm pretty certain I completed Pearl, but I'm struggling to even remember anything about it aside from my hatred for Bidoof.

Its really hard for me to rank pokemon games since either 1) I was too young when I played them to give a modern day opinion, or 2) I've played them in my older years so nostalgia isn't a factor, or 3) I generally just rate the newest games as the best due to the content being up to date compared to past games.
To say the least of which gens I enjoyed most at a given time, here we go from best to worst.
1) Gen 4, my first generation was great, I remember getting pearl version and never opening it until I was in the hospital with what doctors said may have been my final breath. During those two weeks I played pearl and for the entire gen 4 duration I loved and basically lived gen 4. I was a child so gen 4 played a massive part in my childhood making me friends, giving me experiences with exploration and I educated my brain with advanced things like coding for the game with action replays. Overall, I felt this gen was the most enjoyable for me as I took what I had, and I grew with it so to speak.
2) Gen 6, Honestly.. I reaaallly didn't like gen 6. All the stories were bland, the environments somehow felt stale eventually, and I felt unsatisfied with anything I did. Even in ORAS where I was hyped from beginning to release, after about a month of playing it and competitive it didn't feel like a breath of fresh air anymore and like I was still playing X/Y. This was a game where competitively speaking, it was the most versitile scene.. but I disagree. I could always make something "work" if I wanted to.. but this is the gen where I literally just couldn't make it work.... either due to the existance of a mon (coughtalonflame) or because the competitive scene (smogon) felt more forced on. So why is it second? Well it is the first gen I got competitive in, and with competitive, I learned and absorbed so much strategic skill in addition to making friends and having inspiration for streaming and youtube, both which I've done and loved watching. So if I said I hated this gen.. it was mostly due to just standard solo play, but experience wise and the global competition I've had, I can't say this gen was half bad for me.
3) Gen 5, I really don't get the hate.. people will bash designs and say dumb things like "thats yu-gi-oh not pokemon" but gen 5 I personally loved. All the pokemon looked great to me, is gigalith a clone of golem? Maybe but I like gigalith's appearance more, it looks cooler to me. Idc if this gen was meant to rehash gen 1 mons, all that mattered to me was if they looked cool. Its like saying a shirt suck because it had the same logo but is a different color, some will enjoy that new color, others will stick with the original. Several new pokemon were favorites for me (volcarona, galvantula, snivy line, scolipede, escavalier) and I'm glad they exist. I didn't play this game socially however.. I never played BW2 cause I was in this mid teen age where I thought I was too grown up for pokemon and started swaying away during this time.. (gen 6 brought me back) so the gen wasn't really an experience for me so much as a great filler.
4) Gen 3, I may not have played mainline pokemon games during this time, but if I said I never played colosseum or watched the anime and collected cards I'd be lying. I loved colosseum and I still think this was one of the better times for movies and anime. Everything felt alive to say the least.. idk how else to put it. I put this lower cause I can't say it impacted my childhood as much as gen 4 did or made me grow like gen 6. I want to say gen 3 was great but I can't identify if it really was or if this is my nostalgia for that generation.
5) Gen 1, good anime, start of the franchise, I was a toddler, can't remember much of it so rip.
6) Gen 2, I wasn't a toddler and still don't remember much of it. It honestly feels like a forgettable gen.. half the time you'd forget that it was a new generation. Never played the games and HGSS when I did play those just didn't feel great (I think I went back to diamond after e4.). Literally when asked what I thought of gen 2.. I can only say the movies were great.. that's all I remember seriously.
Here's my list. Number 1 and 6 are the ones I know I like and dislike the most but the others could really be in any order. This is how I feel today. I don't count remakes.
1) Gen 2
While I started with Pokémon Blue, it's far from my favorite Pokémon game. The game I still claim as my all time favorite game is Pokémon Gold (though some games are really close to being my favorite). Pokémon Gold is full of nostalgia for me and I love the bright colors, awesome spritework, the fact that you can visit both regions and fight Red, just to name few things. I think it has aged well. The only things holding it back in my opinion is that it doesn't have all the mechanics from newer games, too many HM moves and both the wild Pokémon levels and trainer levels are really low.
2) Gen 1
Classic. This is where I started and I can still enjoy playing Red/Blue/Yellow. I know it's not the same for everybody but I don't mind all the glitches and oversights. Things like bag limits and the way how some moves work (mainly Wrap. Fire Spin, etc.) can be a bit irritating once it happens multiple times but you can't get everything right on your first try. I'd say Gen 2 fixed everything that was wrong with Gen 1.
3) Gen 4
I was taking a small break from Pokémon between Gen 3 and 4 since I got a bit bored of Pokémon (maybe due to growing up and no one else played Pokémon games). Then I noticed that Gen 4 was released and I decided to try it out. I played Diamond and I was really enjoying the new region apart from Mt. Coronet which can be a bit of a pain to traverse. Gen 4 was more challenging than the previous games which was really nice. While I can barely remember the Elite Four, Cynthia stood out by being the best champion.
5) Gen 5
I disliked Black & White, mostly due to not being able to catch any of the old Pokémon until you've beaten the Pokémon League. In a way it doesn't effect me much since I prefer to use the new Pokémon first anyways but I wanted to at least battle against the old Pokémon as well. This was and still is the only generation where I disliked a lot of Pokémon. The worst offenders are Pokémon that are copies of Gen 1 Pokémon like Timburr line which imitates Machop. Fortunately, B2 & W2 fixed all the things I didn't like in B & W, although the story wasn't as good. I've only played W & W2 once. I should replay them to refresh my memories. I've replayed all the other Pokémon generations multiple times.
4) Gen 6
The switch from 2D to 3D went smoothly and I think X & Y are great games but they don't really stand out from the rest of them. I was happy with Mega Evolutions and Fairy type. The amount of new Pokémon was a bit disappointing but other than that, I can't really find much that is wrong. It's a solid but forgettable experience.
6) Gen 3
I'm not sure why I dislike Gen 3 as much as I do. I've played Gen 3 almost as much as Gen 1 and 2 but something keeps bugging me. One thing I know is part of it, is the dull visuals. The color palette ain't as bright and the sprites in general look worse. Diving is the worst. You move like half of the speed of your normal movement which is already slow and there's hardly anything worthwhile under the sea. I kind of agree with the "Too much water" statement. I wouldn't mind if there was a better selection of Pokémon that you can find by surfing, diving and fishing. It doesn't make much sense to put Pokémon that aren't Water type in the sea either. OR/AS fixed most of the things I disliked though. The game underneath the surface was never bad.
I'd like to list my favorite spin-offs as well but this reply is long enough as it is. Maybe some other time.

Ignoring originals in favour of their remakes (because otherwise it gets too complicated), I'd have to say:
1. X and Y. Glad to see a lot of appreciation for these games in this thread, because it seems a lot of people didn't like these games. To date the most refined Pokemon game in terms of graphics and mechanics (well, at least until Sun and Moon). It was great to see Pokemon in 3D, and the French-inspired region of Kalos was beautiful. And that's not to mention the new Fairy type, and the wide selection of wild Pokemon, old and new (the new Pokemon, while not very numerous, were all excellent IMO). Although many found the story to be bland, I thought there was significant improvement in the way the story was told.
2. HeartGold and SoulSilver. A fan favourite and for a reason. Gold and Silver added so much to the series and many (including myself) have fond, nostalgic memories of these games. HGSS brought Gold and Silver into a more modern era, boasting more improvements than any of the other remakes (FRLG and ORAS). In particular I liked the expansion of Kanto, the addition of new legendaries, and the inclusion of some new Pokemon in the Johto dex. This is perhaps as big as a Pokemon game has ever been.
3. Pokemon Platinum. If this were Diamond and Pearl, this would be lower. Diamond and Pearl, while solid Pokemon games, were disappointing to me for several reasons: (i) the story, while usually not important to me, was bland and didn't offer anything above of Ruby and Sapphire; (ii) A notable chunk of the new Pokemon were evolutions/pre-evolutions of previous gen Pokemon, which in itself isn't bad, however many weren't available in the main game; and (iii) the choice of Pokemon and balance of types felt a little off (particularly with Ponyta as the only choice of fire type!). But then came Platinum and these problems disappeared. The story saw some development with the distortion world, and became the best handheld telling of a Pokemon story of its time, and the Sinnoh dex saw many welcome inclusions. As for the generation as a whole, I really liked the more cartoony art-style, and I felt that keeping with sprites on the DS was a wise decision.
4,5. Black and White / Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. This is a difficult one, so I thought it best to group these together. Black/White and Ruby/Sapphire both did something quite controversial - that is to, for the most part, disregard previous generations and focus on a new region with new Pokemon. I myself have mixed views on this - on one hand, I like the feeling of exploring a brand new place, and the thought of every encounter being a brand new one. On the other hand, it can be enjoyable to see how a new game ties in to older games (as in Gold and Silver). What I love about Hoenn and Unova is that they very much have an identity to them. Hoenn is a beautiful tropical region with many unique, brightly coloured Pokemon. Unova is a bit more urban with diverse, weird and wonderful creatures. It's the regions and their characteristic selections of Pokemon that brings me back to these games. Some more game-specific positives: for Ruby/Sapphire it has to be contests, and for Black/White the story.
6. FireRed / LeafGreen. The main thing this generation has going for it is fond memories, and an unforgettable selection of Pokemon. Maybe I've played through Kanto too much, but I'm now finding this region to be really out-dated, even in FRLG. I'd really love to see this region remade, but it needs far more than a simple graphical and mechanical upgrade to make it feel fresh.
I don't remember Black 2 and White 2 well enough to place them on the list. I do however remember being quite impressed with them!
1. Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow because they are what got me into video games and I used to trade with my little brother and it reminds me of when we were close.
2. Pokémon Gold/Silver and their remakes because of the content, two regions and having Pokémon follow you around like in Yellow with Pikachu. Also liked the Pokewalker.
3. Pokémon Diamond/Platinum because of Cyrus, Cynthia, the Distortion World, the amount of legendaries and the ease of getting the national Pokedex when you had to just see all of the Pokémon instead of catching them all.
4. Pokémon Black/White and their sequels because of the story, the starters, the Pokémon World Tournament, Black City/White Forest with the battle towers where at the end you got a shiny Gible/Dratini. I also loved N and the fact that I ended up feeling sorry for the guy at the end of the game.
5. Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire because of the two Teams, the story, the post game content and being able to soar instead of having to have a flying type Pokémon on your team the whole time.
6. Pokémon X&Y because of the region, the Pokémon, being able to customize your trainer for the first time and I liked the story. I just wish that they would have delved more into AZ's story. Also liked being able to get the first starters but the post game content left a lot to be desired.

One thing i keep hoping for is going to a previous region with the new games that's one thing i loved about the Crystal/Gold/Silver series i could be wrong but i'm almost thinking Crystal was the one to do it but yeah i loved that after i beat the base game there was more gym battles to do after
This is tricky, but here's my list from best to worst. The games in the middle and the bottom of the list were very hard to place, and could switch positions depending on my mood. I've also not bothered to add both originals and remakes to the list.
1) SS & HG: it's set in such a vibrant place with lots of different areas to explore (and 2 regions), great music, pokeathlon, pokemon following you & a battle frontier.
2) B2 & W2: I spent so much time in the Pokestar Studios and the PWT, and I really like how badass the villains are, especially with what happens in Opelucid City.
3) Colosseum: The main character is a badass guy who can steal shadow pokemon from baddies, and I really liked the girl character and the plot in this game. Plus, it's completely fresh and different than other games, and it's a 3D pokemon game.
4) D & P & Pt: I really liked the exploration in these games, there were always so many different places to explore. Contests were cool, though I didn't spend a lot of time on them.
4) XD: This was really great, but I didn't like the characters as much as Colosseum.
5) R & B & Y: Nostalgia bumps this up a lot, but these games still have some of my favourite characters and pokemon. Plus Team Rocket is my favourite villains, since I prefer villains to be causing trouble instead of doing an overly complex plan to awaken a legendary to change the world.
6) X & Y: it has such a pretty region, but I would have preferred more things to do post game like a battle frontier. Plus, navigating the route seemed a little too simple.
7) OR & AS: I don't know why, but Hoenn has never really appealed to me, maybe because the tropical and ocean areas felt too similar. Plus I expected too much in the remakes, since I was hoping for a Battle Frontier and an actual Safari Zone where you pay to enter and have a limited number of steps and balls. The new Safari Zone works the same as an ordinary route and so lost everything that made it special.
8) B1 & W1: Lack of linearity really bugged me in this game. If the right half of the region loop is removed (since that's post game), then you're basically left with a long line between your house and the Pokemon League. Plus, I didn't care for the villains storyline and the region felt too dark and urban.
9) Ranger & Ranger GS: I did enjoy these games, but the pace felt too slow and I would have really liked to have been able to speed up the dialogue.
10)Mystery Dungeon GtI: I didn't enjoy the gameplay that much, plus the dialogue seemed repetitive. I think half of all the dialogue could have been removed without removing any information at all, especially when there's flashbacks to what happened a few minutes earlier. However, the overall story is actually really good.
Honourable mention goes to Pokemon Picross for providing the best enjoyment to cost ratio, since I've managed to reach the credits without spending any money.

Thanks. I'm alright on paying for DLC, but I'll almost never spend any real money on any microcurrency that can eventually be obtained from regular gameplay. Plus, I enjoy Picross puzzles
I quit playing Pokemon Picross a while ago because I got fed up with lacking enough Picrites to progress. Honestly, if they did a retail version with everything unlocked (à la Pokemon Rumble World), then I would buy it day one.
