my name is Addrera (realname Sami) and I'm buying a new Nintendo 3DS XL soon. I've watched a lot of reviews and even gameplays video's. But I was still wondering how the graphics look because I saw that Tomodachi Life is very pixelated on video's. Could anyone tell me if this is because it's a video or if the graphics actually look like this.
The graphics are like that. It looks better in person and there are better looking games out there, but the 3DS only has a resolution of 400x240(per eye for 3D), which is very low for modern standards. And the graphics are about the level of Gamecube/Wii. You don't get a 3DS for the graphics, but for the games themselves(and a little because it's 3D).
I have the NEW 3DS XL and personally think that even though its a bit more pixelated than the regular 3DS, the bigger screens are totally worth it. I cant go back to normal screens once I tried it, its just that much better in my opinion
Of course the videos are going to look pixelated. The videos are scaling a relatively small 400x240 image to 720x480 (nearly 4 times bigger), or in some cases, 1920x1080 resolution (nearly 22 times larger than 3DS resolution). 3DS games look their best on the system that they are designed for (on a small screen). The graphics are fine.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

@Addrera, I agree witih @sillygostly's post. I'd also add that, if "pixelated" graphics are your key concern, you might want to look at the 3DS models with smaller screens. The screens on the original model 3DS and the 2DS have greater pixel density because the screens are smaller; this makes for less jagged edges and less apparent aliasing, while the XL-versions stretch the image a bit. While most folks prefer the larger image, the trade-off lies in a slightly degraded image quality. The New 3DS (non-XL) offers a compromise, as its screen is bigger than the original 3DS, but smaller than the XL.
Personally, I had similar concerns as yours — that's why I stuck with the original model 3DS for years, and loved it. However, I recently upgraded to a New 3DS XL (with an IPS screen), and I'm quite pleased with the image quality. Your best bet, of course, is to have a look at the various models in person.
The smaller screens are too small for me... I have big hands and I like bigger things, my phone is 5,7 inch too, I just saw a Tomodochi Life gameplay video and the Mii's actually looked really bad on the video, that's what I'm concerned about. Is this because it's on a video and the guy is playing it on 3D? I'm buying my new nintendo 3ds xl with tomodochi life and pokemon alpha saffire Sunday btw.
The graphics in many games are absolutely beautiful. If you want some examples of great 3D graphics see Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, Bravely Default, Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and Kid Icarus: Uprising. Most games from Nintendo are beautiful as well as the games from Atlus, and there's many great examples of 2D graphics as well, like Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Xeodrifter and Mighty Switch Force.
Graphics are certainly better than what you'd find on PS4 or X1, and only the WiiU is a match, though I may still give the 3DS an edge.
here are some screenshots from MiiVerse in the original resolution. They aren't scaled so you'll be able to get a good idea of what games actually look like on the 3DS
