Ok so here's a fake scenario. Lets say theres a Pokemon X and Y 3ds XL limited edition bundle that comes with X or Y preloaded on the SD card. Now lets say i want to upgrade to a bigger SD card, can i just pop a 32 gb sd card into the XL and redownload the game on the eshop? Or is the game tied to the preloaded sd card? I guess this scenario can be also used with the fire emblem limited edition that comes with the game preloaded as well.

Thanks in advance.

If you redownload the game, you'll lose your saved data, so that's not the smartest way to do it. If you want to keep your save data, the procedure is this:

  • First, take the SD card with the game on it, and insert it into the SD card slot in your computer (if you don't have an SD card slot, you can buy an adapter).
  • Then, make a copy of all of the files on the SD card, and save them on your computer (but make sure not to alter any of the files in any way).
  • Take out the old SD card, and insert the new one.
  • Copy all of the files from the old SD card from your computer, and paste them into the new one.
  • Put the new SD card into your 3DS. And presto! You've got your games on a bigger SD card!

Hope this helps!

My bad! I forgot to include that i would redownload the game right from the start.. So no save data would be lost as i wouldn't have played the game yet. I just needed to know if i would be able to redownload the game on another SD card from the eShop but i guess i can :] Thanks!

...but could you back-up your Save Data? What if you're just playing your 3DS with Pokemon Y downloaded in the park and this man just comes up and takes it right out of your hands and runs with it. (A scenario like that happened when an adolescent walked up to my car when I had my window opened and grabbed the DSiXL out of my lap.) What would happen then? I know that you can't Back Up data with Animal Crossing New Leaf like you could with the Virtual Console games, but what happens if I'm forced to redownload it on a different account? Is there ANY WAY I could restore that data from my computer if I ever needed to?

Sorry, but nope. It's all tied to the system. The backup thing is for if you ever decide to delete the game (like to free up space), you can redownload it later and have your save file again. That's why we sorely need an account system.
