i don't normally like making threads saying "look at this dumb person saying a dumb thing!" and I feel Nintendo fans are too easily angered by journalists who don't say Nintendo is doing well, but this is EXACTLY the type of ignorant person Nintendo fans should be annoyed at.
Animal Crossing would be a perfect fit for the iPad and the monetization potential of its item collection system boggles the mind.
And this glorious quip:
The end of November period brought just about the worst possible news for Nintendo: The latest Pokemon games sold a dazzling 1.5 million units in Japan during launch week.
OH NO NINTENDO IS MAKING MONEY
In all seriousness: what a ridiculously overdramatic article. Also gotta love how they mention Castlevania even though it isn't a Nintendo-owned franchise.
When I read this earlier today, I couldn't stop laughing when I read this:
''While Nintendo’s console sales slide, the mobile game market is about to hit $22 billion in 2014 and is poised to balloon to $30 billion in 2016. So many of the most famous and lucrative game franchises are sitting out the tablet and smartphone game explosion completely – Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Pokemon, etc.''
I somehow doubt it's serious, but I've seen plenty of serious articles that were just as bad...
"Animal Crossing would be a perfect fit for the iPad and the monetization potential of its item collection system boggles the mind. Dr. Mario and other puzzle gems Nintendo has created could challenge the billion-dollar Candy Crush Saga empire so easily. F-Zero and Mario Kart are precisely the kind of rally games that fit the tablet format."
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
I actually think it wouldn't be that bad of an idea to expand in the mobile market. The reason the 3DS is so succesful, even if you don't count in Pokémon games, is because it manages to sit comfortably in between the somewhat simple, casual experiences that work well on mobile devices on one hand and the big, hardcore titles that dominate PC and home console markets on the other side. It should just not be treated as an alternative to dedicated handheld systems like the 3DS, more like a third pillar that can coexist with it. While Mario Kart or Advance Wars (or heck, even turn-based RPG's like Pokémon) are good examples of games that could work fine on a smart phone or tablet, anyone who's ever played a game like Super Mario Bros. or Zelda: Ocarina of Time, knows that certain types of games simply can't function without buttons. And even then, you'd probably have a better time racing across Mario Circuit on a handheld game device than on an Ipad. It depends on the type of games. A puzzle game might be perfect for your Iphone, but Super Mario Bros. just isn't.
I do not understand the mindset that seems to exist this generation that Nintendo somehow owes PS/XBox/mobile gamers versions of their IPs on gamers' platform of choice. Nintendo makes games for Nintendo hardware, therefore, if you want a Nintendo game, buy the appropriate Nintendo console. If I wanted to play PS/Xbox exclusives, I would do the adult thing and go and buy one of those consoles. Simple.
The irony is that I agree with at least the idea that rewarding Nintendo for being too safe and pretending they live on an island is not good but it's kind of incredible how much this misses the point. Either that or the person involved hasn't paid attention to how Nintendo is an island far away from being corrupt, greedy monsters that try to monetize children. Seriously even ignoring the many other problems, this is a terrible year to say that Nintendo is the gaming company making mistakes.

Overlooking one major thing: Mobile gamers don't pay for games. If Nintendo was going to put their IP onto mobile platforms, it would need to be heavily watered down games with cancerous micro-transactions to make any revenue. That would seriously damage their brand. And the mobile market is just too volatile for a company of Nintendo's size to be beneficial anyway. They have their own hardware with the Killer App of all Killer Apps. They literally can't do better than that.

It misses the point because it's a giant piece of port begging thinly disguised as analysis. He doesn't care about Nintendo's health or ethics as a business. He just wants to play Advance Wars on his iPad.
If it doesn't mention XY to prove anything, then it's BS (it still is but for the wrong reasons).

So many things wrong and infuriating with this article.
"It’s a massive number in a market where few titles manage to crack the 100,000 unit barrier during their debuts." There's been MH4U, Yokai Watch and Smash Bros in the last couple of weeks alone. Funny how these are all on the "aging" 3DS.
"The hot Pokemon rollout helped once again revive the aging 3DS portable console sales, boosting the weekly unit sales number to 83,000. This is more than seven times higher than weekly sales of Sony’s flagship PS4 console in Japan." This seems to imply the PS4 is selling as well in Japan as in the rest of the world and it's unique for the 3DS to (massively) outsell the PS4. (The 3DS sold 88,653 units by the way, fact checking is hard apparently.)
"Nintendo is not crashing fast enough." Yeah, it's not crashing at all.
"Animal Crossing would be a perfect fit for the iPad and the monetization potential of its item collection system boggles the mind." This is just sickening. I'm a huge fan of Animal Crossing, I would be horrified to play it when you have to pay for items etc. Going mobile will just alienate Nintendo from their fans in my opinion, and the people who do play mobile want to play games for free.
