Hi i just ordered my New3ds and i also ordered a usb cable for it. I'm wondering if i can use my phone(xperia z3, output 5.0VDC, 1500mA) charger for charging my 3ds. Is it safe?

Thank you in advance

No, you can't. The 3DS doesn't have any ports for USB cables. You need a specialised 3DS charger, which are sold seperately. A USB-cable simply won't fit.

There is a lot of confusion here it seems.

USB Port Types (Shapes and Sizes):

  • USB ports come in a variety of shapes and sizes. From the standard rectangular Type A, to the mini usb and usb type-c on newer phones.
  • The 3ds has a USB Type B (I believe) similar to USB printers. Thus, as the original poster already knows, you can physically plug a usb cable into the 3DS if the ports match.

USB Charging:

  • The output of the 3DS USB charger is 4.6V 900mA.
  • The output of the Original Posters phone charger is 5.0VDC, 1500mA. This is close enough to work.

If you read around online, many other people are charging their 3DS using typical USB power converters like the one you have. Is it the best for the system long term? Who knows. Will it work? Yes.

As Meowpheel said, check the voltage output of your phone charger, and check what is the voltage requirements on your 3DS.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
