Ironically, I think they would have gotten a lot more attention for being positive. For example, "hey video game fans! You love Mario and his adorable Tanooki suit. Did you know that real tanookis are being killed for their fur? Help us celebrate this new game by helping out the real tanookis." Then show some cute pictures of tanookis doing silly stuff like all the cat videos. Bam! Sold. Maybe even ... you know .... run a charity event cooperatively with Nintendo instead of showing Mario, a character children adore, covered in blood.
With this I totally and completely agree. I wish that the PETA would use better and far more sensible ways of trying to garner attention to the issue of animal cruelty and human dietary health because we really and truly need for a lot more attention to be given to the issue of vegetarianism versus systematically killing animals for fur and meat in an industrialized food industry.
... And in a couple days or so, they'll be wondering why young people hate them. Really, us youngsters are not that intimidated by shock and awe tactics; we're more inclined to laugh at those than take them seriously.
If they did some actual research, they'd know that tanukis in the Mario world are intelligent creatures capable of speech (and business practices) who praise Mario as much as just about anyone else (As seen in: Super Mario Sunshine).

Yeah, but that would require actually doing research before blindly and ignorantly launching a crusade against something, and we all know how hard doing research on a video game is ... [/sarcasm]
I get it, exploit even the most tangentially related link so you can get free publicity for a worthy cause. That's fine and all, and I can see the rationale behind it.
However, this is also the kind of thing that makes everyone think that PETA is stupid. Weigh the pros and cons PETA.

"Oh I love the tanuki suit, it's so cute and useful! Actually, I feel like googling 'tanuki' right now!" "Wait... tanukies are real? How cool!... Oh they're so cute! I'll donate some money to this wildlife center to help keep their Least Concern status!" "Wait, what's this link... PETA? Oh disgusting I had no idea that was Mario's real intention! I'll help the tanuki not buying his new game instead!"

It boggles my mind how out of touch those in charge of advertising and publicity at PETA are. They are really very disconnected. It should tell them something how many vegetarians are disappointed in their tactics. It's very frustrating when I agree with their cause, but time and time again they show true incompetence.
Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. -Albert Einstein
I wonder if nintendo could actually sue PETA for this. They are afterall using their character in a way the original creator never intended and in a decidedly negative way.

PETA must have alot of time on their hands to attack a fictional character for wearing fur I guess real people wearing fur isn't as bad as a "Italian plumber in a tanooki suit"
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
Why are people suprised they don't attack skrim. The Elder Scroll games aren't popular in the mainstream. Its a 3D dungeons and dragons which isn't that cool.
WAT!

I've just been hearing alot about Skyrim lately, Plus in it you actualy kill the animals and use their furs, it just seems like a much better target than Mario, in which you collect A LEAF and get the ability to fly due to a suit that looks like childrens pajamas.
What I'm saying is it would actualy make sense to attack Skyrim as opposed to Mario.
I also NEED some Tanooki Pajamas now. (not made from real fur of course)
