I doubt that they would as it doesn't have a objectively superior replacement. 2DS is a cheap downgrade and the XL is simply an alternate option for those who want a larger screen (and less volume for some reason).
No way, the 3ds is dominating the market. And plus, if Nintendo is still continuing the Wii U which has medicore sales then they will obviously continue the best selling handheld of this generation.
UPDATE: Bowser just ate some cake and it was yummy
Might be like how they stopped selling the OG DS in favour of the Lite. I actually prefer the original to the XL and 2DS (mostly because it's the lightest) so I'll be annoyed if mine breaks and I have to get one of the newer models
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
Like @Jollykarp said, I certainly hope it won't get discontinued. If for any reason I'd need to get a new 3DS in the future, I would hate to have to get a 2DS or an XL.
This wouldn't actually surprise me. I've been expecting this since they announced the 2DS. Phase out the original and thus you have the ultimate 3D machine and an amazing machine that can play those 3D games in 2D. Now all that's left is a XL price drop (around the 3DS original's current price $169.99 maybe a 2DS drop to $99, but that'd be surprising!)

Given how most marketing in recent months has used the XL instead of the original model, it being discontinued wouldn't surprise me at all. Especially not with a new 3DS redesign unveiled at E3 or something.
I haven't seen really any 3DS's in stores lately outside of Pink, otherwise it's all 2DS/3DSXL so it got me thinking. I called the 3 most Local Gamestops to me (feel free to call yourself to get the same info *doesn't mean it's 100% accurate) Westford Massachusetts,Lunenburg Massachusetts and Leominster Massachusetts and asked if they had any 3DS units in stock besides pink in all three cases they only had pink or purple and hadn't seen new shipments for months and were told by corporate the old 3DS was being discontinued in favor of the XL and 2DS. Even going to gamestops website only ONE gamestop within 200 miles of me had a SINGLE black 3DS left for sale every other store was Pink...a few purple or only 2DS/XL units.
Now whether they are correct or misinformed...take with a grain of salt...whether this means new redesign or only carrying the XL and 2DS from now on who knows..Still three stores saying the same thing does make me wonder
Yes it's still for sale on Nintendos website however all i saw were the Pink and purple color options which are the ones not selling and to my knowledge the Cosmo Black is not a limited color. So they may be running into the same issue gamestop is that those are the colors they have backstock on. As far as other companies Kmart/Sears/Walmarts in my own area (right outside of Boston MA) also only either seem to have Pink maybe a few purple but primarily Tons of 2DS/3DSXL.
Doesn't mean it's concrete by ANY stretch but still makes one curious.

In the recent tomadachi add, they didn't mention the original 3DS but rather the XL and 2DS. Just shows how they want people to get the XL and 2DS.
Don't get me wrong, The XL is great and in many ways better than the original but the only problem I have with the XL is the low audio. That's just about it.
Im just waiting for the final revision of the XL, the 3DS XL Slim, smaller and way lighter, with a slightly better screen, longer lasting battery and if god is listening, better speakers for once, Nintendo has always made wonderful music but low audio output with cheap speakers hurt the product, Im gonna do some research to see if i can manually upgrade em myself. I found the original to have the lowest audio (my sons 2DS with the mono speaker seems louder) also, I used headphones, best way to hear ALBW amazing soundtrack.
The sales of the original model are dwarfed by the XL, so they could just be significantly lowering production and marketing of it, but it wouldn't surprise me if we see a 3DS redesign at E3. Maybe a regular sized model, but built more like the XL. There were too many reliable sources saying Nintendo would be showing hardware at E3 for something not to happen, and it's probably a year too early for brand new hardware, and the QoL stuff doesn't fit in at a gaming press event, so a redesign is most likely IMO.
In the UK, the ads never reference the 3DS, the last ad with the original in it was in October last year. Also, the only time I see the 3DS in stores is as pre-owned. I guess we might see a 3DS Lite this year, or maybe a revamp like the DSi was to the DS.
I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]
