In the States, there hasn't been a trend to allow for prepaid data for devices that use data-only (at least the iPad). If Sony follow's the iPad's lead, they'll have an exclusive carrier(s) with monthly plans only. They may not do this, but I doubt they're going to assume that people willing to shell out the $$$ for this device, they're too poor for a monthly data package.
I'm sure it will be a neat device. It's no surprise there will be a touch screen. Between Nintendo and EVERY smartphone out there, people are just accustomed to their portable devices having them now. It is interesting that they are doing cart based games, I have to wonder if that's just a proprietary SD card for general memory storage. If the system isn't going to be backwards compatible with UMDs, you'd think Sony would just move to a download-only model.
The announcement is timely, but I don't think it's going to stop anyone who was interested in the 3DS from getting it, at this point. Not that much is known about it yet, after all. It'll be interesting to hear about the internal specs of this thing. Knowing Sony, it'll probably be an impressive little machine.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
I can see how the PSP2 appears to be riding on Nintendo's coattails though. The sudden announcement is very timely. Then there's the use of a touch screen and motion controls, both of which Sony once mocked.
Agreed. It's not the first time Sony has done a me too announcement. Sixaxis was a perfect example of this. I'm wondering if they has to do it to get more third party involved in their console. With the iPhone and the DS being out for years a touch screen is almost a necessary feature. I think Nintendo was smart to have 2 screens. It will be hard to make a 3D touch screen.
@ HolyMackeral, thx for that link. I'm glad you enjoyed you Shish Kabobs and East Indian Curry Miami sauce.
Seriously, that won't even fit in ones pocket looking that big. I hope that's only the display because that's going to be difficult to market as a "portable". I can easily see this getting a new Sony NGP Sim Lite revision by the end of next year.
BTW what game is this in this image? "

I think they'll just do what amazon did with the Kindle, the 3G should be free, and also they should have a wifi option, because I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want to be paying for something I don't have to have. Either way, I can't wait for both the 3DS and the NGP and hope to get both

I agree with catcher82611. Sony would only be placing a death knell in their coffin to make people pay a monthly fee for their 3G. It is also obvious that the Sony NGP won't be a threat to the Nintendo 3DS in anyway.
I have a pair of 3DS preordered but would have no problem Ebaying them if the price of this PSP2 is competitive and the release games are awesome. Hell, even Tic Tac Toe is better than what the 3ds is offering so far for release games. I guess games are the determining factor for me.
Like Machu, I mean Super Machu 64, said: no backwards compatibility? Wtf! This kinda kills my UMD collection.
Patcher can't be wrong all the time. He is in his position for a reason. When we rant and guess on the forums we can be wrong quite often ourselves. The only difference is somehow he got into the position where everything he says is torn apart by everyone.
The Next Generation of Portable games, doesn't look very portable. Also, no backwards compatibility? Wtf!
Yes it is. It just can't play UMDs, but it will play evertying you bought from PSN including PSP games.
I for one this this looks like a lovely piece of kit. I will still get the 3DS and I will love the 3DS more, I imagine. But the NGP will provide some fantastic handheld gaming experiences that the 3DS can't.

All I'm seeing is more power and better graphics. Not exactly "fantastic" in my opinion

Well, usually with each jump in a generation, you get more power and better graphics. Whats the difference between the GC and N64? More power and better graphics. Whats the difference between the PS1 and PS2? More power and better graphics. Also, the first iteration of a new device is usually pretty thick (Remember the original DS and PSP?).

Quite right, quite right. Still, more of a death knell in the coffin of Sony PlayStation is the fact that it won't be available in the United States until next year? What the heck is Sony thinking? They better change that. If they wait to release the NGP next year no one will even care a frappe about it. Furthermore, if the gizmo cost $299.99 and the software is $49.99 then heaven help Sony. I'd hope that they wisely price the NGP at $199.99 with the software priced at $39.99 and attempt to change up their image for one that will appeal to more people.
Nintendo has appealed to gamers and non-gamers alike and I dare say that Sony's new promo trailer for the Sony NGP is a sign that they are catching on to the fact they need to attempt to appeal to casual people. [youtube:vWtIXtODuAk]

While that may be true, I'm seeing very little innovation and nothing really new.

Really? I've never seen a rear touch pad on a hand-held, or the use of 3G in a gaming device. Not to mention dual analog sticks on a hand-held

Actually a current gaming device does use 3G zeebo the console aimed at emerging markets, not sure how successful it is but doubt it will appear in the West, though they are 1st with 3G as far as I know.
2 Joysticks? Sweeet Touch screen on front? Eww...(glossy = fingerprints) Touch pad on back: Eh? Kinda weird... No announced price = too expensive for my tastes
