I haven't heard a(ny) (hardware) spec(s) about the machine, but if it's not 3d that hurts the eyes, if it's 3d @ all, & the 3DS does hurt the eyes, then the machine will probably be the better choice for no eyestrain.
There has been a pretty steady stream of information about the PSP2/NGP over at Joystiq. The more that I hear about it, the more excited that I'm getting. Even though the design is very similar to that of the original PSP, I still think that the system looks really gorgeous. Dual-analog, trophy support and it sounds very powerful for a handheld. There is still a lot of info that has yet to be revealed such as battery life and price but I am definitely getting one. Oh and yes I am still getting a 3DS as well. I got enough love to give to both systems.
Day one buy for me. That PSP2 looks amazing. But I'm still more excited about 3DS, perhaps coming from the fact that I've played it in person and haven't played the PSP2...yet.
Its currently called the Next Generation Portable (NGP) by Sony.
A portable with the power of the PS3 is intriguing, but the battery life has to really suffer as a result. It looks like it will be expensive too - some comments put it in the ballpark of at least US$350 mostly thanks to the OLED screen. 3G connectivity will require a monthly plan which adds a lot to the price if you want to use it (and isn't that a big selling point anyway).
The local scanning feature which tells you who nearby has a PSP2 and what games they're all playing sounds cool but invasive. Also interesting that that particular feature is already in the 3DS in the much less invasive and possibly very original form of StreetPass, but that hasn't really gotten much attention.
Most important to me though is the games - it's only just the past year or two I've found the original PSP interesting thanks to its interesting exclusives. If the PSP2 can get some must-have exclusives which appeal to me, I can see myself picking it up.
I also like how Kotaku has an obvious negative spin against Nintendo and an obvious positive spin towards Sony. Some recent articles about each of them:
See? That last article is interesting but you can smell the spin lol. Still more interesting is that the commenters often have a different opinion too.
How does 3G require monthly plans? You can get prepaid data...
As for me the NGP looks like the online (enhanced PSN + achievements + 3G + access to Android apps) blows the 3DS out of the water. Which is a critical selling point for me.
But the best thing is the fact the two consoles are entirely differently. You can have the two with little crossover easily.

There is no way that it is as powerful as a PS3, this is simply Sony marketing BS. Some PS3 games will be converted to run on the machine, but only after a lot of optimisation. Any PS3 game that is truly using the full power of the PS3 will not stand a chance of running on this handheld.

@ImDiggerDan Of course it's not actually as powerful as the PS3, but considering the smaller resolution you can get almost PS3-level visuals with much worse hardware.
Well so far the NGP doesn't impress me as much the Nintendo 3DS. Sony is nothing more than a gimmick and they've let me down time after time while Nintendo and Apple Inc have always left me feeling satisfied and happy. I've always enjoyed Nintendo and I won't turn my back on the Big N just because Sony PlayStation says "hey we're better cause we've got a portable PS3".
Sony should know by now that Nintendo is the king of handhelds hands down.

I think the next handheld generation's biggest issue will be battery life, 3DS has... sub-optimal battery life, and 2 quad-cores in a casing can't be easy on the ol' battery either, how "portable" is it to only be able to play in 3 hour bursts? (And however long the NGP will last)
But in the end it comes down to the games, if they're the same stuff we can play at home on regular consoles, why bother paying lots of money for what still will be watered-down ports of console games? (Inbetween not changing gameplay at all and causing who-knows-what ailments, 3D doesn't impress me just yet)
Now you see, evil will always triumph, because good is dumb! >:D
I'm not really a home console person. I can't even imagine buying another home console unless it's the Wii 2 and XBOX Kincect and even in that case I don't think we'll buy XBOX Kinect until next Christmas although the Wii 2 is a day one purchase for our family.
Basically, our family is always on the go and we really do prefer to have portable devices. Currently I have the PSP 3000, Nintendo DSi and iPod Touch 4th Gen. My sister has the iPod Nana, PSP 2000, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo DS Phat and my father has iPod Touch 3rd Gen and 4th Gen and mother has both a BlackBerry and iPhone 4th Gen. So as you guys can see we're a mobile family.
Personally, I don't really like home consoles, the only home consoles in all of history that I considered worth paying money for have always been the Nintendo ones going all the way back to the days before the grande Nintendo 64. I also enjoyed the SEGA Genesis. If SONY finally puts some oomph into the NGP and gets really good games such as to focuses on their own good properties like Ratchet and Clank, the Hot Shots franchise, LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers and Sly Cooper the way Nintendo does I might actually buy the NGP. I can't stand all the crappy games on the current PSP. It's outright awful. Sony has never been as attractive and cool as Nintendo is. What's wrong with them?
Marvel already cancelled Thor on the PSP to develop Thor for the Nintendo 3DS.
@TokyoRed Hey, you should give credit where credit is due. The PSX and PS2 were excellent consoles and their libraries are superior to the GCN's and Wii's libraries overall.
Also the 3DS is more gimmicky than the PSP2 due to its 3D screen being a major selling point. Just sayin'.
Holy Shish Kabob!!!!! HolyMackerel! [youtube:w4PBFg7FJPg] I gave you my opinion on the matter. I'm not very cozy to Sony PlayStation. They've disappointed me time and time again without fail. I'm weary of buying their products, laying down good money for them only to be disappointed by their lameness. Nintendo kicks Sony's can 100 to 1. Even CNET, Yahoo Games, IGN and CNN Tech have all pointed out that PlayStation pails in comparison to Nintendo. Sony has always been lame and uncool compared to the Big N and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that. Now go figure and enjoy thy delicious shish kabob!

The PSP2 doesn't do anything for me. I'm not a Sony fan. I think Sony Supporting Android is a smart move though. I would also like to know the price and battery life as well. I would have thought they would have gone for the 3D screen considering how much Sony is pushing it. Even to the point where they were saying nice things about the 3DS instead of the usual smack talk.
Well it's also just my opinion that the PSX and PS2 have better catalogues than the GCN and Wii. I feel the same way about Microsoft's game consoles. After the Xbox, which I bought and quite enjoyed (but had plenty to complain about), I'm wary of getting a 360 or whatever game devices they release next.
I can see how the PSP2 appears to be riding on Nintendo's coattails though. The sudden announcement is very timely. Then there's the use of a touch screen and motion controls, both of which Sony once mocked.
