in this it states that they have no plan in the long run for a 3DS lite. They said that they have no plans to make a smaller version.
That does not mean anything... There could be a 3DS XL or a complete revision of the 3DS with better battery and other aspects to the 3DS but still the same size. Don't be fooled quite yet

I was thinking this since the 3DS is soo similar to a console

They're probably only saying this as a response to those people who say they're gonna wait for a new version of the handheld to come out. I personally reckon it'll be 2 years at the least before they even mention anything like a 3DS Lite

that's because it's too much like the DS lite. I've never thought they would make it, because the basic build is way too similar. It'd be kinda hard to make one thinner.

perhaps they're planning a 3DS Slim, then either way, it's way too early for them to be announcing anything of the sort... they don't want to shoot themselves in the foot, with people already holding off on purchasing a 3DS due to different factors. :/

The 3DS is actually smaller than the DSi, but I'm guessing Nintendo might go the way of a super-size first.
I expect Nintendo to pump out four iterations of the handheld before a successor. They've done it before:
Game Boy: Original, GB Light, GB Pocket, GB Color -- Game Boy Advance (Original, SP and Micro)
Nintendo DS: Original, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL -- Nintendo 3DS
It's an expectation.

Dude, it's going to be called 3DS SP

"No plans for a 3DS Lite YET" is probably more likely the case.

@Sylv: the GBA only had three, though, didn't it? the original GBA, the SP, and the Micro iirc...

That's what they want you to think...
I love Erica (Strike Witches), Eureka (Eureka Seven), and Tenma (School Rumble), stay away from them. xD
Update: Also love Yukari and Mizore from Rosario + Vampire.
Another Update: Also Yuuki...from School Rumble...
Yet Another Update: Also Amber and Xiao Pai from Rune Factory 4.

There were only three form factors. There was a forth version of the GBA that was basically the exact same thing as a GBA SP, except it had a much brighter back-lit screen as compared with the original SP's dim side-lit screen.

If they release a 3DS XL with longer battery life (like the DSi XL) and a larger effective viewing angle, I would totally buy that over the 3DS.

The simple fact that they kept the 3DS looking so much like the DS Lite and DSi in terms of form factor makes me believe that they've found a look they like, so I really don't see any updated system any time in the near future, maybe even years. But you never know.
