We would like to solve this issue by making the Nintendo eShop accessible via PCs and smartphones as well. At the beginning, you will not be able to directly purchase software from your PC or smartphone. Instead, you will need to take a photo of a QR code at the Nintendo eShop by using the camera of your Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS will then open that specific page of the Nintendo eShop. That function is already included in the upcoming system update for the Nintendo 3DS. In the future, we will make it so that you will be able to purchase software by using your PC or smartphone,

We are also planning to launch the Wii U, which is the successor to the Wii, during the next fiscal year. We would like to show the final format of the Wii U at the E3 show next year. As we learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, we are trying to take every possible measure so that the Wii U will have a successful launch.

And then implements it in a clunky, half-arsed way?

Why can't Nintendo just do things right? Sighs

Pretty much Both Android Market and XBLM do this already. I can see QR codes if they're available for sites like nintendo Life to put in the review.

eShop from PC sounds amazing. My dorm's internet connection is horrid. Online on my 3DS is not an option. When a game comes out, I have to wait until a good time for my to drive all the way home for a weekend and download it then. My PC connects perfectly, however. This sounds wonderful. Can't wait.

@yellowchocobo, I agree to that. Maybe I just have wifi everywhere I go, but I don't see the point in shopping from a phone or PC to find a QR code, take a picture of it, and let that link me. Now, on the flipside, including it in advertisements or in slips of paper with retail games might not be a bad idea. If a company makes a retail game and has downloadable titles as well, that would be a great way, but the idea of connecting to the internet, browsing, taking a picture, connecting to the internet, purchasing, downloading, then playing? That is a chore to type much less do.

Exaclty. Nintendo should be offering both.

Look, this is how it SHOULD work: If you're at work or something, and don't have your 3DS console (or a Wireless hotspot) with you, you just head over to the eShop PC site, and pay for a game there. When you get home it's been SpotPass delivered to your 3DS.

Or, you head on to NintendoLife and see a game you like the look of. It has a QR code there and you have your 3DS with you and you're in a Wireless area. Then you just take a photo of the QR code and can shop on the console.

Nintendo's taking baby steps to that (acceptable) level of convenience, and if it got there it would be competitive with Sony, Microsoft and Apple. I just worry it's too little, too late.

When I want a downloadable game on my 3DS, I'm happy to just go onto the eShop on my 3DS and get it from there like I have been.
No biggie.
My 3DS will have to be connected to the Internet to get it even if I buy it from a PC so I couldn't really care less myself.
If other people would rather do it from their PC though, then it's good to hear that they're taking steps towards that.

Hmmmmmm... If I were the consumer and just found out about the shop, I would be interested. I access the website and I find a game I like, and I want to purchase it. Then, suddenly, I am surprised by a bar code asking me to take a picture of it with a 3DS. That doesn't seem cool. Maybe Nintendo is doing it that way to prevent kids from purchasing anything without their parents (the eShop is restricted by parental controls right?). Also, wouldn't buying the games from the internet directly require an account that has to be tied to the 3ds? A Club Nintendo account should do the trick, and I wish Nintendo would know about it (or if they know about it, be courageous and try it out).

According to the link at the top, yes. Oh, and you would be able to do it on a phone too.

I'm not going to lie; the QR code stuff is absolutely stupid. It's just wasting more time. Although I'm not really surprised considering that Nintendo doesn't have any sort of universal account system in yet, and trying to implement that that during a console's lifespan might just complicate more things and lead to an unstable platform.

EDIT: After thinking about it for a few minutes, I kind of see the point of the QR code; you can stick it in reviews and magazines and easily allow for a customer to instantly get access to that item without fumbling through the somewhat convoluted menus of the Eshop. But it being used as the main way to "purchase" software on a computer? That's still stupid.

QR codes will be pretty convenient actually; as noted, you could stick the image on reviews or advertisements for the game. That's not super high-tech, granted, but it'd be nice to just point your 3DS at a news article or review online and jump straight to that game in the eShop. Combined with demos, good idea.

Anyhow, I'm far more interested in the Wii U mentions above. I'm actually very happy that they're accepting a "holiday 2012" release target. That gives them time to make it compelling package and gives them at least a shot at wow-ing the holiday shoppers as the Wii did when it became "the" hit item across the board that Christmas. Next E3 will be fascinating to say the least, possibly more than any to date.

Woops, made a slight interpretation because of my quick reading. The QR code approach to the non-3DS shops are only temporary:

"At the beginning, you will not be able to directly purchase software from your PC or smartphone. Good catch BobbiKat

So, next month, we'll be taking pictures of QR codes. Next update after the upcoming, we "may" get direct purchases from PC and Smartphone. Hey, it's getting there. I love Waltz's idea of how you have your 3DS at home and you're at work or some place, and you can purchase a game on your phone or computer, and when you get home, your 3DS would have downloaded the software- even multiple.

It's interesting how Nintendo is using smartphones as another way to purchase eShop games. Wonder if they'll also make things connected directly to your Club Nintendo account which I'm assuming will be required if you're going to be purchasing games on PC and Smartphones (as 3DS and even Wii and Dsi connect to your Club Nintendo account).

Also, WiiU being released next holiday is perfect. Gives ample time to have a solid release and hopefully, Nintendo will release the big 3 Japanese games here in the US next year.

New Pokemon game interests me. I hope it's surprising as the CEO said it would..
