@MisterPi Because less resources to 3DS, means more resources to Switch. I thought the entire premise of the Switch was that Nintendo could combine their home and handheld teams and focus all of their resources on one system. You know, the ''now you don't have to buy two consoles anymore, you can play everything on one!''.
@Octane that's my thinking as well, but if it's like 2017, then I'm not particularly worried. They'll throw a couple first party games on the 3DS while focusing on Switch. I doubt we'll see a situation where the Switch will suffer because they need to support the 3DS.
We still haven't got Yokai Watch 3 English version, Puyo Puyo Chronicles English version, Style Savvy Styling Star USA Physical retail and etc.
Hopefully this year those games localized ASAP.
Take it with a grain of salt. If they come out tomorrow and say "we are done with the 3DS" sales will tank. They will continue to support it with some localization and 3rd party titles, but I seriously doubt we are going to see many, if any, more major 1st party titles on the system. Nintendo will quietly phase out other versions of the system until the N3DS XL and N2DS XL are the last two models, and then shortly after announcing a cheaper, entry level version of the Switch, probably in 2019 or even holiday this year, the 3DS will quietly be retired.
Though I suspect Nintendo will support the 3DS' online services for several years after that and possibly continue very limited production and sales.

You know what would be some nice support for the 3DS Nintendo? How about some more Virtual Console games, like more NES games?
I would sure love to play Ice Hockey, Golf, Pinball, and Earthbound Origins on the go!
And while you're at it, how about getting some third-parties onboard as well? Maybe get Final Fantasy, Bubble Bobble, and other games ported to the 3DS Virtual Console? Especially the ones that Japanese gamers have had for years?
My biggest gripe is not that support could end soon (although I hope it doesn't). The biggest kick in the teeth is that Nintendo introduced the "New" 3DS and then barely created anything to take advantage of it. I will admit the 3D ability on the new unit was worth the cost of admission though. I use 3D mode all the time now where as I hated it on the original models.
I'm fine with just the games remaining for the 3DS. Radiant Historia, Alliance Alive, Dragon Quest 11, possibly Snack World.
After that, I've still got about 10 more games for the console I've wanted to buy at some point. It has more than enough games to keep me playing it for years.
When is dragon quest 11 going to release in the west? I actually hope there's another zelda game on 3ds...let capcom try an make a traditional 3D zelda...I would be so hyped...open world on switch, traditional on 3ds...
Nintendo's decision to eventually cut off support for the 3DS will not be dependent on how well the Switch sells. Rather it will be entirely dependent on how well the 3DS and its games sell. The 3DS sold 750K units in December. That is considerable. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have already sold 3 million plus units. That is also considerable. There is obviously still a market for 3DS and its games. I suspect it is mostly parents of younger kids who are buying the hardware, but there are also people like me who love the system and will continue to buy games for it as long as Nintendo continues to make them. Our numbers are dwindling as people jump to Switch, but there is still enough of us for cheaper projects like remakes and ports to make a decent profit.
I could be wrong, but I believe the rumors that Nintendo has at least three major first party games releasing this year on 3DS (Zelda remake, Wario Land remake and new Warioware). The rumored Zelda : Link's Awakening remake and Wario Land VB remake both make sense in terms of the team that is supposedly developing them (Grezzo and Skip) and the fact that both are rumored to have started development in 2016 before Switch was an option for those teams to be working on. If both turn out to be true I am sure that many people will be ticked that these games are on 3DS and not on Switch, but I will be happy.
I am also confident that DQ:XI and Yo-Kai Watch 3 will be localized this year.
Beyond 2018 I have very little hope for any major games on 3DS from any publisher. Anything coming out in 2018 started development in 2016 or earlier when Switch was still an unknown quantity. By early 2017 it was obvious that Switch was a success and any projects planned for 3DS were probably moved to Switch to maximize the available audience for their release in 2019 or later.
