Miyamoto hints at a 3DS XL in this IGN interview: http://ds.ign.com/articles/110/1104396p1.html

"I think there's still a bit of a gap between what you can do on a portable device and a home console device, so I can't say for certain that there wouldn't be, say, a Nintendo 3DS XL at some point in the future, and I wonder how big that XL would need to be in order for it to replace something like a home console, and that's a line that's very difficult to judge at this point in time. "

Read the whole interview for some other interesting stuff.

Hi.

Funky_Gamer

They better not do that. If they do that they might as well do a 3DS lite.

How could you honestly expect Nintendo to not re-release their handheld console? Where have you been the past 20 years?

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.

I never said I didn't expect it... I mean of course they will re-release it. I was just surprised that they talked of a new 3DS even before the original is out.

Hi.

Joeynator3000

And after that will be a 3DSi XL, lol.

You're right; it does seem a bit odd. But when you think about it, it makes sense in this case. The 3DS is pioneering this 3D technology, but Miyamoto is touching on the fact that the 3D experience will be different on such a small screen than with something like a full-sized home television. Therefore it makes sense to consider how the possibility of releasing a larger-screened 3DS may effect things (although I think he makes it clear that this is nothing more than consideration at this point). I think the DSi XL was pretty unnecessary, but it may make more sense with the 3D capabilities taken into account.

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.

Yea I agree, I would prefer to go straight to the 3dsxl

To each his own.

Well I'm not at all joyful about a "3DS XL" at all. I didn't see the actual need or logical reason to even release the Nintendo DSi XL except for older people who'd prefer having a larger screen and of course there was the "need" on Nintendo's part to prove to Amazon that they can compete with the Kindle by releasing "100 Classic Books" to coincide with the release of the Nintendo DSi XL.

However, I have no interest in the Nintendo DSi XL nor do I want a 3DS XL or PSP MegaBoy for that matter. If one would like bigger screens then there is obviously the Wii and your television screen or the iPad. I really don't want Nintendo and Sony to trudge down the road of "big screens" as I think the screen size of the regular Nintendo DSi is quite sufficient. In my opinion the DSi XL seems like nothing more than a gimmick (in my humble opinion) to simply garner more money.

I have nothing against larger screens; however, when one stops to think about it, it is nothing more than a money gimmick because the regular 3DS will be at lest $199.99 while the proposed Nintendo 3DS XL will be at lest 249.99 which isn’t bad considering the PSP Go should be $199.99 instead of $249.99. While, the prices might not be so bad, the sensible thought line is: who would even purchase larger screens? Most teenagers, young adults and children don’t really care about bigger screens so much as they do about good graphics, game play and online features.

Older adults, mostly those in their late fifties are not the typical customers of a company like Nintendo or Sony PlayStation and so, therefore my point is that not many of the aforementioned people are going to purchase something like the Nintendo 3DS. Nevertheless, I know that it is true that Nintendo has drawn the (and I hate this term) senior citizens and non-traditional computer users into this arena via the success of the Wii and the creation of a market for casual gamers. Most of the “older adults” would purchase the Kindle or an iPad before they’d buy a Nintendo 3DS and that is because most of them aren‘t aware of the productive Swiss Knife properties of something like the 3DS. Free 3G Connection anyone?

Again, I have nothing against those who want a bigger screen for the older generation but let’s face the truth: The Nintendo 3DS has not even been released yet and we’re talking about bigger screens? Let’s us at lest get to having the Nintendo 3DS on the store shelves in markets around the world before we begin the discussion of bigger screens.

LOL. I know right Pyrodon? It took me long enough. I was writing it out while watching Marcus Welby MD and I Spy on RTV (Retro Classic Television). Mt father has really gotten me into classic TV. It's far better than all this Sex and the City mess and sensual junk that airs on TV these days. Sign of the times I dare say.

However, I'm serious when I say no to the idea of a Nintendo 3DS XL. I sincerely would like to be able to go the store and come back home with a Nintendo 3DS before the Spring of 2011 instead of having the wait till the Winter of Q1 2012 because my dear friends at Nintendo are out trying to make a 3DS with massively large screens. Nintendo can go forward with releasing the 3DS now and then doing an iteration of the 3DS with bigger screens toward later on down the road as I’m sure the older generation will indeed want to try out the 3DS. And why not? Brain Training anyone?

No redesigns unless it's EXTREMELY necessary.

The Lite was immense, the DSi was like a test run for the future and the DSi XL just never made sense in my opinion.

To be honest, I don't think it's a matter of it being necessary- rather more convinient for people.

I think all products should have different versions to fit an individual's wants. Lots of people love the DSi XL because of the larger screens- and that apps like Flipnote Studio really benefit from it (I'm kinda wishing I had waited for the XL, because drawing on a much larger screen would have made things easier for me).

3DS XL should be considered. I just wish it would come out at the same time as the regular 3DS- giving us options on sizes and even colors. Yet, I'd pick the regular 3DS because I want it for portability- but I would take the 3DSXL into consideration. But that's only if the two versions come out at the same time which just isn't going to happen.

Holy crap guys...
First of all, Miyamoto was only thinking out loud. What he said had nothing to do with anything that's actually in the works.
Second, Nintendo is going to release a redesigned version of the handheld eventually. They've done that ever since the original GameBoy, and nobody should be remotely surprised when it happens again.
Thirdly, if you don't like it, then don't buy it! Nobody is forcing the money out of your wallet. The least you can do is wait until there is actually something for you to decide you don't want, which isn't going to happen any time soon.

Miyamoto was only pointing out the fact that people might appreciate the 3D experience on a larger screen, which makes sense. And since Nintendo doesn't want to go the way of Sony with the (currently) unpractical 3D television technology, it's an idea that they could push the (very practical) 3DS technology in that direction.

who do you think has been playing video games since the 'old days', man? do you think they've just appeared in the last decade or so?? i get so tired of those who think they are the first cool generation. it's laffable. i've played video games since 'pong'. i turned 60 this year. i am female (oops! there goes another stereotype). i have played atari, genesis, every nintendo system except the dreadful virtual boy, every sony system except the PS3...do you remember sega's game gear? finally a backlight on a handheld. i have a 360. my son has always been one happy camper to have a mom who had to have the latest gaming console. he's 25 now and has my old systems.

i love my dsi. i can't wait for the 3ds. i didn't care for the linear quality of the dsi xl graphics so i am waiting to check out the 3ds. next time you want to generalize, try thinking a bit: some of us have been there from the beginning; that makes us a certain age. i am a hard core gamer and detest some of the stuff nintendo has pushed to get the casual gamer involved. but that's due more to people who have never played games vs age.

believe it or not, but being older doesn't mean you are automatically stupid or living in another time/space continuum. and no, it doesn't mean one can't be knowledgeable re: technology. hell, do you remember when you had to use DOS on computers? probably not; so who's the unenlightened one?

them releasing an XL won't be such a problem if they just release the same time the original comes out, so that people have a choice right from the beginning which one they want

you know... even with as important as the man is to Nintendo, gaming... and the world, if i were Iwata... i would never allow Miyamoto to do an interview with anyone ever again. and... i probably would have made that rule decades ago. the guy is my hero... but he has the biggest mouth this side of Gulpin.

Same here. The biggest draw back for me on the 3DS is the screen size of the bottom screen. I want to upgrade my DSi to a DSi XL more than I want a 3DS.
