@Starlight: how is 'DS3' any more original than 3DS? lol, it's worse IMO because it doesn't even get to play off'a the '3D' gimmick. it's still a dual-screened system, and i figure simple is best when naming handhelds anyway.
I'm rubbish at names. I don't mind the name, but you got to admit it does sound like another upgrade to the DS.
As for what Hardy said, yeah I see both points on both the consumer suffering and also no evidence of it with happy consumers.
He is right that Nintendo do seem to hold back things with little reasoning, but at the same time it's always about the games rather then the features. (9 9)
@Hardy83: did you actually purchase a DSi, or are you just complaining for the sake of complaining again?
Yes...Which I actually regret.
Also you may not be suffering now, or you may not suffer at all. Maybe when the the 3DS Lite comes out, or when you start wishing you had access to the online shops sooner rather than later. There will always be pros and cons to getting hardware at launch.
Pardon me for interrupting one of your rants Hardy, but I do recall several other systems this generation that seemed to have been "rushed" and yet they seem to be doing fine now.
I would say look at it from another perspective. Perhaps they thought it would be ready by March, but some problems occurred in the process of preparing the 3DS. I say this because the announcement that the eShop won't be ready until May seemed to be a little last minute considering the system launched not too long after the fact. Here's the question: what would hurt everyone more?
Delaying the whole system and throwing off the entire launch line of games as well as telling everyone, consumers, developers and publishers, at the last minute about delaying the system for two months.
Delaying the features that are not yet ready and launch what they have ready to please those who anticipated its launch at that specific date. Sure we may not get everything but I think this option is better than waiting for the ENTIRE system to be ready.

It's times like this I miss the days of Europe getting the console last but getting the best line up as the games came out already in the US and Japan.

At what point did I say the system would fail? I know FOR A FACT heh That Iwata is rubbing himself with Yen bills right now as we speak. A system being rush doesn't mean doom and gloom. As you said, it's just, it's still rushed which can be a bad thing, mainly for consumers.
Again. Some people mind, some people don't mind. I would prefer the system be ready at launch. Clearly they couldn't get the shop services, video services and all other features ready by the launch in their financial quarter so they just push those features back instead of the whole system. Though I think it has more to do with getting the sales in the financial quarter then it being inconvenient to publishers and what not.
The system was still rush regardless. Whether someone finds that good or bad is a matter of opinion, cause obviously it doesn't matter in the slightest because in the end Iwata is still rubbing himself in Yen.
I personally find it a bad thing and I'm obviously waiting to buy it, or a future version. Some people clearly have no issues with it, which is fine....The system was still rushed though.
It feels slightly rushed mostly due to the lack of eShop and this apparent black screen error. However, I'm glad they put the system out within the parameters they originally promised. I would have been absolutely pissed if they delayed 3DS to May at the last minute. I miss my DSiWare and I want the eShop but I waited a whole year for the system, I can wait 2 measly months for some features.
It was pretty obvious the system was wrong a long time ago.
I think before winter when the launch lineup became clear and sometime in Jan/Feb when we were told some features wouldn't be available.
It also only took minor effort to look up the fact that March was the last month for Nintendo's fiscal quarter, and you begin to see that the launch was rushed to maximize the numbers for that fiscal quarter.
Who suffers in the end? Nintendo? Shareholders? Consumers? Yup, consumers...Well the ones that buy the system anyways.
There's also the SLIGHT chance that Nintendo purposely withheld features as a sort of way to promote the system down the road without having to work on actual software. Like "Oh this is amazing new agencies! Look! 3DSWare is out! Tell the public!" even though that feature should've been ready out of the box.
The name itself is evident that it was rushed without going into all that but I agree.
3DS works although it's such a lazy name on Nintendo's part, why not call it something original? DS3.
Original? Did someone use this name before? Honestly I don't see how moving the number changes its originality.

@Hardy: Ah well, when you put it that way, it does seem kinda rushed. I personally would rather get the features in increments rather than all at once anyway. To me, that only makes the anticipation sweeter even after its release.

Sort of strange you feel that way. I think if they just called it DS3 it would feel extrememly lazy and Sony-ish. I always loved the name "3DS" because of its multiple meanings. The device has "3D" visuals, it is the next generation of the "DS" line, and its the 3rd major DS system(phat/lite and DSi/DSiXL being the first 2). I can't imagine a more fitting name for the hardware!
When investors want a return on their investment, yeah, stuff gets rushed. As someone who worked at a casino that had a new, massive, multi-million dollar monster upgrade built. Investors were getting antsy after a couple of delays to the opening, ultimatums were thrown around, and they wound up opening it before it was finished. Luckily, because of the nature of video game systems and the ability to update them with the latest software, it's not that big a deal in this case. In a world without the ability to update, if some features like eShop were flat out cancelled, then I'd be ticked.
Let's attack aggressively, kupo! :D

Well hardy you obviously are just pissed because u bought the DSi .... Now you refuse to afford the 3DS now right from spot because you recently bought that other handheld. PS: waiting just for a slim / XL / power version is just a silly excuse
Its all a choice of buying every tiny improvement of a CURRENT game system or just skip those tiny stuff for 5 years and buy a REAL new system at launch to get satisfied.
Gamer enthusiast will always get a really new system at start if its proper and casual or "meh" people will get it cheaper and with tiny system change after years eventually ....
Hey ballkirby your a HUGE exception I feel sorry for ur update torture but try to find a second case of your like .... well it now works for you i hope ?
@Hardy, Stereoman: sorry, i meant to say 3DS in my initial question. Did you purchase a 3DS, Hardy? :3

@Stereoman: that was the point — he had been answering my question, and i'd made a mistake in said question. whether or not he bought a DSi was not what i originally wanted to know, and honestly i think the DSi has nothing to do with what he's talking about now. with the DSi, almost everything was available either at launch or very soon after, not months after (as in the case of the 3DS).
