I don't think it's a coincidence this is coming out the exact same day as Pokemon. They're trying to make the 3DS a more tempting offer for those on the fence. The design looks very similar to the Wii U gamepad I have played very little on the Wii U, but it doesn't look that hard to play.

welcome to the future! where everyone has giant weird hands that are perfect to fit in 2DS' design to use touchscreen and L/R buttons simultaneously

reggie: the wiiU is failing. we need to do something.
iwata: yeah it sucks. but what can we do about it?
myamoto: lets make a 3DS without the 3d and name it 2DS.
reggie: you're a genius!

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AT NINTENDO ???
there is no need for a 2DS. i know several kids uner 7 that play 3ds and just turn the 3d off. no problem at all.

this is the most stupid thing i have ever seen from nintendo.

@6ch6ris6 didn't you know? non-gamers and kids mutated, so their hands fit perfectly that 2DS ugly monster design...

It got cancelled after the great earthquake of Poland.

What great earthquake of Poland? The great Earthquake of New Poland III, or the great Earthquake of Poland caused by the aliens?

I'm gonna shamelessly copy a comment I saw on YouTube which pretty much states my feelings on this.

I think many people are missing the point of this handheld. It's for the people who DON'T have a 3DS, not for who already does. It's a cheaper budget version for those who have been missing out on 3DS exclusives.
But I agree, the design looks a bit odd. But, then again, that's what we all said about the WiiU controller and it worked out, right?

People act as if Nintendo are totally relying on this 'new' system; which I'm pretty sure they aren't. It seems to me that the 2DS is the 3DS equivalent of the DS Lite. As the quote says, it's an more cheaper option. Can't afford the 3DS? Get the 2DS. Want the full experience and can afford it? Get the 3DS. This isn't for people who have a 3DS already. Plus it seems to be aimed at kids.

I really hope this isn't indicative of where Nintendo is going with future handhelds. If the 3DS successor looks anything like this hideous... thing, I might just be switching to Sony portables. None of which I've ever owned in my life.

DON'T MAKE ME DO IT, NINTENDO.

Yeah, because you bought a 3DS solely based on how it looks, and not that it plays Nintendo games.

I bought a 3DS XL based solely on its design. I already owned a 3DS. By your logic, nobody would have upgraded to the better hardware.

I like Nintendo games, but that isn't a factor that overrides every other aspect of a console/handheld. If I hate the handheld's design, I'll probably hold off: especially considering this is Nintendo we're talking about. Since when does Nintendo not release variations of the same hardware?

It seems like Nintendo has been quick to assure people that this doesn't represent the future of the DS line.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a Nintendo Direct.

As much as I find this unnecessary, I guess it does have a purpose of catering to young kids. The design clearly shows that, and the 3D isn't recommended for young kids, even though I personally don't think the 3D is really that potentially damaging.

My biggest problem with it is that the 3D has been perfectly optional on the 3DS. If parents were concerned about the 3D so much, then they would have their kids use the switch to go down to 2D. No clam shell design is also strange, especially for the little kids who might not be very protective of their toys and electronics.

However, I would never think that this would confirm the future of Nintendo hanhelds. Nintendo just shot down that assumption.

Well, if this is aimed at small children, a Nintendo Direct wouldn't do much good, would it? Nintendo needs to get TV ads and store displays for this... thing... if they want it to sell.

I'll just repost what I said in the new comment section:

Oh nice. Now I don't have to worry about my hinges when my kid plays my 3DS. I can just get him this brick. I like the option.

For people dumping on this...it's not meant for you. It's meant for kids who aren't supposed to use 3D, and that's also why it doesn't fold. Harder to break that way. I'm not quite understanding the backlash. It's not like this is taking the place of the 3DS. And this isn't a statement on Nintendo's commitment to 3D, as others have implied in this thread...it's so parents don't have to worry about the 3D at all for their kids.

Actually, the hingeless design would be better for young children, I cringe everytime a kid is too rude when opening, closing or playing their DS/3DS.

Edit: what he said. ^

How does anyone break the hinge? What in the world would you have to do to the thing in order to break it? I mean, you just open it, and it snaps into place. What are little kids doing to it?

I think some of you are really overreacting.

As said, it's not being released to replace the 3DS or 3DS XL. It's mainly for people who don't have a 3DS. It's an entry-level handheld particularly for kids. It's also if you don't want 3D. Most 3DS owners, including me, barely turn the 3D on.

And being $130 while launching alongside Pokemon, you better believe this handheld is gonna sell.
