Hey! I got a DS Lite the year it came out and just only found it in a bag D:

I have noticed that Nintendo has moved on from the DS and now have the 3DS out... Now If I wanted to, I could go down the the store right now and buy a 3DS... BUT!!! I would not have any money for a game, so here comes my question; Are these free games? Is there a lot to do with a 3DS?

Is there also mulitiplayer? I am an Xbox player and would love to join the Nintendo crowd as well.... People say the Nintendo fan base is really kind and I feel like I am missing out on some great games, so yes! Is it worth it for me to get a 3DS RIGHT NOW!!

Thanks.

Yeah you would be a fool not to get a 3DSXL

A 3DS is worth it for Animal Crossing alone.

Well, game-wise there's

  • Face Raiders,
  • little AR games and AR stuff (some of which only becomes available by Play Coins which you'll get by leaving your 3DS in Sleep Mode and walk up to thousand steps per day with it)
  • a simple RPG and a jigsaw-puzzle collector you'll only make a tiny bit of progress in each time you meet someone else with its 3DS in StreetPass mode or use Play Coins
  • and lots of demos.
These should help to tide you over for a few days at least.

It's also got

  • a 3D camera you can also shoot video with,
  • Nintendo Video with some short non-gaming 3D clips
  • a little app with which you can send handwritten notes, photos and short sounds off to others whose friendcode you got.

That's it for free stuff you get with the system and can download atm if i'm not mistaken.

Hi

The 3DS is very socially connective with a note feature to send messages to friends and StreetPass to get items in game and also for playing the inbuilt games. There are some fantastic StreetPass games out in Europe now and it can't be long before they get to the US. There are some awesome games too, just choose something that's in your preferred genre. 3DS is great, but XL has a few improvements like the bigger screens and better connectivity. I get more StreetPasses with the XL than the normal 3DS, even though they're in the same place. The inbuilt games would maybe keep you busy for a while depending on how many hits you can get on StreetPass. That should improve when Nintendo sorts the relay stations soon. Could you maybe try to get a bundle with a game thrown in? Anyway, get a 3DS because you'll end up loving it. You can do loads with it.

3DS is a terrific console. There aren't really any "free games," per say, except for the AR games like Face Raiders that come with the system or the Streetpass RPG. It plays old DS games as well as 3DS ones, so rest assured, if you have any kind of DS backlog you'll have something to play on it until you can afford 3DS software. Also, if you're low on cash, consider getting something cheap from the Nintendo Eshop to tide you over. I recommend Mighty Switch Force if you like platformers and Crimson Shroud if you like RPGs. These are original 3DSware titles that are under $10. The eshop also has DSiWare titles and VC titles, with selections of games from older consoles such as the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES, and Game Gear.

3DS has, as I mentioned, AR games and functionality. It has a camera you can take 3D pictures with. It has the forementioned Streetpass RPG, where people you pass in public who also own a 3DS exchange information and can use each-other's characters in a turn-based RPG. Swapnote is free as well, I believe, and you can use that to send 3D notes to friends.

Some 3DS games feature excellent multiplayer, others none at all. If you want fun multiplayer games, I recommend Animal Crossing: New Leaf (although the multiplayer is primarily cooperative in this title), Resident Evil: Revelations (same, where you and someone either locally or online run through levels shooting monsters together), Kid Icarus: Uprising (featuring a variety of competitive modes), Mario Kart 7 (more limited, but still fun competitive play, and you can join online communities), Code of Princess (you can't really get the most out of this brawler without playing online at least a little bit), and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (fun, competitive online multiplayer).

There's not much of a multiplayer component to Fire Emblem: Awakening, but you should go ahead and pick that one up since it is one of the best games on the system. Ditto with Super Mario 3D Land.

If you get a 3DS, be sure to pay the extra $30 and get an XL. It's a huge improvement over the original model.

It's also got a barebones, slowish web-browser. I don't do much with it though, so i don't know if you can play any webgames with it for example.

It supposedly has a decent mp3 player on it. I never use it, but a lot of people seem happy with it in that regard as a multimedia device.

The web browser does suck. Doesn't really matter, though. I use my 3DS to play games. If I want to browse the web or something, I use a smartphone or a laptop.

EDIT: Also, something to keep in mind: the battery life on 3DS/XL is nowhere near as good as the original DS Lite's battery life. It's still proficient for my needs, but it doesn't hurt to do things like lowering the screen brightness or turning off the 3D when you're out on a long trip to keep it running as long as possible. The battery life is another reason to get the XL over the original model, by the way, as it lasts longer.

You can get a Mario Kart bundle for $200.

Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword

I'd say wait until you have money for a game personally, the installed software is unlikely to entertain for long so not really worth owning just for the that while waiting on an actual game imo, I'd at least recommend downloading something from eshop to begin with.

The music player is awesome, I use it constantly. xD
I would say to try to at least save some money for one 3DS game, I haven't really been paying attention to bundles so I don't know if there's anything out there. But it has plenty of awesome games from Kid Icarus: Uprising to Monster Hunter. (and its going to have even more awesome games by the end of the year. )

DualWielding

If you never used your DS much you can consider getting cheap used games for your 3DS old DS games can be found for cheap online and in stores in bargain bins and the DS has an incredibly backlog you just need to do some online research to identify some titles you would be interested on....

And about buying a 3DS I do recommend it (XL preferably) its the best console right now.

Also keep in mind that for the touch-screen you might want to get a screen protector with your system. I didn't have one on the original DS and once gameplay got a bit more hectic my screen looked like a mess in no time. (I reckon these should be available for about 5 bucks.)
I also wouldn't recommend Resident Evil Revelations if you're in it for the multiplayer. Personally i'd get the 360 version for that since if you want dual analogue controls on the 3DS you have to pay about 20 bucks extra for the so called Circle Pad Pro If that's even available anymore, not sure.

I would say go for it, especially if you still have DS games. That way you can just wait until you have enough money to buy games for the 3DS. You have to love that backwards compatibility.

Get your butt off the forums and get the Nintendo 3DS! I also recommend the 3DSXL and you should get Animal Crossing: New leaf when you get enough money to buy a game! But prepare to get your body ready.

the 3DS is a fantastic system, but I'd wait until you have the money to get a game or two with it.

If you're into RPGs, I'd recommend:

  • Fire Emblem: Awakening ($40)
  • Tales of the Abyss ($40)
  • Crimson Shroud ($8. eShop)
  • the Denpa Men: They Came by Wave ($10. eShop)
  • Sword of Hope II ($2. Virtual Console)

Platformers:

  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D ($35)
  • Mighty Switch Force! ($6. eShop)
  • VVVVVV ($8. eShop)
  • Cave Story ($10. eShop)

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
