I have to admit that I'm an older female gamer and had let slip all the new gadgets and systems until I purchased a PS3 a couple years back because of having not only a gaming system, but a dvd/blu ray too. My son just recently left his new 3ds xl at my house and boy did I get back into the love of gaming! I had a field day playing his new Mario 2 and so purchased my on 3ds. My question has to do with the games interchanging with the other ds systems. I found out that ds games will play on the 3ds as I purchased a used Sonic Classic and Mario Bro. but while looking around for more games, came across something that confused me. Is there more than one ds system, and if so, how do you tell the games apart if you are looking at a cover online and it only says ds on it? Since I virtually know nothing about the systems, how do I make sure I'm buying the correct ds game if I can't see the actual cart? I admit these would be used as some of the games I want don't come in 3ds yet. Help please!!! Can anyone give some advice on this question, or is there even another ds type system? Thanks for any info. Also, where do I go to purchase downloadable games?

As for regular Nintendo DS games, I believe they're all the same. Now, as for 3DS games, that's a bit different. There is a new version of the system called the New Nintendo 3DS, and there are a few games that are only compatible with the New Nintendo 3DS. Those games have the New Nintendo 3DS banner at the top of the game case instead of the Nintendo 3DS banner at the right side of the case.

If you want to enjoy downloadable games, visit the Nintendo eShop. It should be in the touch screen menu of the 3DS, and the icon looks like an orange shopping bag.

Happy playing!

Late in its life cycle, the DS got a hardware revision called the DSi. There were a small handful of DSi games that only played on DSi, not the regular DS. Those are clearly labeled though, so if it just says "DS" on the case, then you're fine. I'm pretty sure the 3DS will play those few DSi games anyway.

Same for 3DS. There's a hardware revision called the New Nintendo 3DS, and those games are clearly labeled. Though right now, I think the only N3DS exclusive game is Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, though the new model also enhances most other games, being slightly more powerful hardware and having a few extra buttons.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

Thanks Tyler! There are some online sellers who don't understand what games they have and what they will play on as they advertise only ds, then other will state that they play on several different systems, so it's been kind of confusing. Good to know the new 3ds have logos at the top instead of the side, which I didn't know. I didn't know about the new 3ds with face recognition before purchasing my 3ds, so I have the regular 3ds. Sounds odd to say that being as the 3ds is not really that old, lol. I also like the fact you can play the regular ds games on the first 3ds. This makes it so much easier for the gamer's pocketbook! I just wanted to make sure there wasn't another Nintendo ds out there with cart's that are different and wouldn't fit in my 3ds. Thanks so much for the info!

Thanks much CaviarMeths! That clears it up for me! I just missed a cool .99 cent auction because the seller didn't know what would play with what and I didn't want to take a chance, lol. I'm actually starting to like the idea of downloadable games, so ready to check that out too!
