Hi!
I'm just getting back into gaming with a 3DS XL after not playing for a few years. I'm really into old school Nintendo from growing up (Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Super Smash Bros, etc).
I picked up Super Smash Bros and I'm looking to pick up 2-3 more games.
Thinking...
Zelda: Link between Worlds
Mario Golf
Bravely Default (need an RPG in there)
Yoshi's new island
Go for A Link Between Worlds if you're a fan of 2D Zelda and A Link to the Past. Bravely Default is good but it's second half is disappointing and can drag on for the wrong reasons. I would suggest going with Fire Emblem Awakening if your looking for a great Strategy RPG experience. Instead of Yoshi's New Island go for Mario 3D Land.

How could I forget Fire Emblem >.<

It's a bit of a niche game but, if you happen to be a long term fan of the Final Fantasy series, Theatrhythm: Curtain Call is absolutely amazing. Zelda is also a cracking game, and if you're a fan of Mario then you really can't go wrong with Super Mario 3D Land.

I think Super Mario 3D Land is a really fun game and would totally recommend it. I got it for $40 then sold that copy for a digital version when it was on sale.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

As most others are saying, avoid sticker star.
I strongly suggest Fire Emblem: Awakening, as it's a super amazing game.
Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is decent I guess. I personally never finished it, but it's worth a shot.

Super Mario 3d land - 3ds UNLESS you find it really cheap some where. I paid $40 when it was released & beat the game in literally 3 week's. Look around & see if you can get it for maybe $20 but its not worth $40
3 weeks of gameplay for a $40 Mario game? All the more reason to get it.
All Mario games can be finished within a day, so that's not really surprising.
If you're a fan of old school jRPGs, you can't go wrong with Bravely Default.
You COULD get Pokémon X or Y, but Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are coming out in less than three weeks, so you're probably better off just waiting.
Really it all just depends on what you're looking for. 2D Platformer? Kirby: Triple Deluxe is my personal favorite. Racing game? Mario Kart 7. Life sim? Animal Crossing. Need a Zelda game? A Link Between Worlds is a fantastic return to the world of A Link to the Past, while Ocarina of Time 3D is just a slightly updated remake of the N64 classic, so you can probably give that one a pass if you've already played it and if you haven't then it's basically the definitive version.
The 3DS is a JRPG haven. You have no shortage of choices. Bravely Default is a great pick, but only one among many. I would also recommend Fire Emblem: Awakening and Atlus's output. That's Atlus developed games, not necessarily published. Code of Princess and Conception II definitely aren't for everyone.
I enjoyed all of the Mario Sports games on 3DS, Mario Golf, Tennis, and Kart, though I've enjoyed those games in all their previous releases.
If you want a more casual platformer, I would absolutely take Kirby's Triple Deluxe over Yoshi's New Island.
And yes, all of the Zelda.
As a recommendation that nobody else mentioned, Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and the upcoming Phoenix Wright Trilogy would be great choices if you're into digital purchases. Story-focused games with witty, funny writing and very likeable, charming characters.
