I agree. The concept of "no hidden catch no strings attached" is what makes Nintendo awesome. You pay 50 for Zelda but you get a heck of an adventure. DLC is a better fit for other platforms.
Level Editor is a stupid idea for a main mario game. Mini mario? Then yes, please! But no main series, it just ruins the point and doesn't feel right.

It is optional, but chance are if they put one in the game people will ignore everything else and just edit.
And when has a main mario game ever recieved an editor anyway? It's not like it'd be ground breaking. (Unless you could make your own power ups)
