I loved NSMB on the Wii, but I found the original DS game to have the blandest level design in the history of Mario's main series. Now, if NSMB2 were to take a cue from SMB2 and feature a crazy, imaginative alternate world filled with all the odd elements from that black-sheep classic, I'd be all over it. But if it uses all the same art assets as the first game, what's the dang point?
This. NSMB Wii was fantastic, the DS one not so much. At this point all they can do is go feature-crazy to have a chance of grabbing my interest.
New Super Mario Bros. 2??? AW HADES YEAH!!! That on top of Wii U SMB is bliss for a side-scroller fan like myself! My only qualms is that they're obviously going with a Super Mario Bros. 3 theme again, with the "P bar" in the lower left corner. If they're going with a theme from a past game, Super Mario World is so painfully overdue for some love! Oh well, I'll hold out hope for NSMB Mii for Wii U.
Also, what's the deal with this being NSMB 2 when we had NSMB Wii? Or is this another numbering nuance between Japan and the rest of the world? Looks like Super Mario Bros./Super Mario Bros. 2/Super Mario USA (2) (and the first 6 Final Fantasies) all over again!
Regardless, I couldn't be more thrilled. There was such a long Mario side-scroller drought in the N64-GameCube era, and I'm glad it's a thing of the past!
@Pixelman Glad to see someone who shares my enthusiasm! I'm not sure about this one, but I bet we get a level editor/creator with New Super Mario Bros. Mii (or whatever it'll ultimately be called). One thimg: Is August for this only a Japanese release date, or worldwide? I hope worldwide. It'll make the wait for Wii U much easier...
I think IGN and @NintendoAmerica said it's out in NA in August too. And yeah, I was just playing NSMBDS earlier this evening and wishing for a 3DS sequel, haha. So stoked. I just hope they make the physics less floaty.
Boy... have to feel for Samus when there was barely a peep about Metroid's anniversary, yet Mario, Zelda, and now Kirby are recipients of great fanfare.
Also, going by the first screen shot and the obvious SMB 3 theme, I'd look out for Kuribo's shoe making its return in NSMB2!
Let's attack aggressively, kupo! :D

The other screenshots suggest some kind of gold theme going on (are the enemies invincible like Star Mario or what?). I'm curious, though still disappointed at the idea of staring at all those lame backdrops and 2.5D sprites again with evidently little new.
@Odd - right on, and the Wii version's fun also had to do with its multiplayer. Will the bring that back for this game? I hope it appears in some form.
2 new downloadable Pokemon games coming to the eShop. One where the Pokemon you have can be transferred to B/W2. Wonder if that will leave Japan? Also New B/w2 trailer!! Yay!
@warioswoods The only reason I hesitated to mention the multiplayer is because on NoA's Facebook they said that Mario and Luigi will be playable, but didn't mention Toads. That plus the absence of it in the screens leads me to believe it's unlikely. Actually, 2 play co-op sounds slightly more plausible, though I don't know how that would work with flying Raccoon Suit.
